Kat Von D sure has been busy lately!
After years of messy relationships with the likes of Jesse James and Deadmau5, she surprised us earlier this year by marrying a singer named Rafael Reyes.
And after that, she had more big news to share … she’s pregnant, too!
She and Rafael had their big wedding just last weekend, and she’s well into the pregnancy now, judging by the size of her bump in recent photos.
So that’s all nice and sweet and good, right?
It is — honestly.
But while everyone wishes Kat nothing but the best with her pregnancy and her journey into motherhood, a lot of people are a little bit outraged with her right now.
And that’s because she recently took to Instagram to share a lengthy, preachy message about her ideas on raising her baby, and those ideas are more than a little controversial.
Here, let’s just get into it, you’ll see what we mean.
To begin her post, Kat wrote “I knew the minute we announced our pregnancy that we would be bombarded with unsolicited advice. Some good and some questionable — unsolicited none the less.”
“I also was prepared for the backlash and criticism we would get if we decided to be open about our personal approach to our pregnancy.”
She said that her own father was even upset about that approach — he “flipped out on me when I told him we decided to ditch our doctor and go with a midwife instead.”
“If you don’t know what it’s like to have people around you think you are ridiculous,” she complained, “try being openly vegan.”
“And if you don’t know what it’s like to have the entire world openly criticize, judge, throw uninformed opinions, and curse you — try being an openly pregnant vegan on Instagram, having a natural, drug-free home birth in water with a midwife and a doula, who has the intention of raising a vegan child, without vaccinations.”
And there it is.
There’s no issue at all with wanting a natural home birth, midwives are just fine, and as long as you’re smart about nutrition, having a vegan baby is no problem.
But, as you can probably imagine, that very last part, the “without vaccinations” thing, is the real issue here.
It’s strange, because Kat is actually complaining about receiving “uninformed opinions” from people about her decision not to vaccinate her baby, because all the strong opinions on vaccinations are based on, you know, science.
If someone tells her that it’s dangerous not to vaccinate, that’s not an “uninformed opinion,” that’s a scientific fact.
Still, Kat said that her point with all of this is that “I already know what it’s like to make life choices that are not the same as the majority.”
“So your negative comments are not going to influence my choices — actual research and educating myself will — which I am diligently doing.”
It takes literally two seconds to do the research on vaccines, but OK.
“This is my body,” she went on. “This is our child. And this is our pregnancy journey.”
She encouraged people to follow her if they wanted to see that journey, “but if you don’t dig a certain something about what I post, I kindly ask that you press the unfollow button and move the f-ck on.”
“So before anyone of you feel inspired to tell me how to do this, I would appreciate you keeping your unsolicited criticism to yourself.”
She’s been going through the comments on her post and deleting the negative ones, but she can’t moderate the comments on the rest of the internet.
And on Twitter, it’s pretty clear how people are taking this little statement.
“F-cking moron,” one person wrote to Kat. “You’re spreading harmful misinformation that could potentially harm children including yours. Selfish and ridiculous. Shameful.”
Another person told her “If you don’t care enough about your own child to actually consult a medical professional, at least care about someone else’s child that doesn’t have the advantages of having a choice.”
“Kat Von D is cancelled lol,” yet another critic tweeted. “You’re constantly preaching about saving animals but when it comes to risking innocent babies and children dying from measles or polio you don’t give a f-ck bc it’s ‘your choice.’ Get outta here.”
Many, many Twitter users are talking about boycotting her makeup brand, and there’s been lots of lists going around with dupes for her most popular products.
It sounds like she wanted to get everything out in the open to avoid unsolicted opinions, but really, she may have just screwed herself.
