Maureen O"Hara Dies; Miracle on 34th Street Actress Was 95

Actress Maureen O’Hara – best known for her work in such films as Miracle on 34th St. and The Quiet Man – has passed away at the age of 95.

A statement from her family states that O’Hara passed away surrounded by loved ones at her home in Boise, Idaho.

Though best known for her work as Natalie Wood’s mother in the 1947 Christmas classic 34th Street, O’Hara appeared in over 50 films over the course of her career, including the acclaimed John Ford works Rio Grande and How Green Was My Valley.

Last year, O’Hara received an honorary Oscar with the inscription, “To Maureen O’Hara, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength.”

In the early ’70s, O’Hara retired from acting (reportedly after frequent collaborators Ford and John Wayne teased her about not being a stay-at-home wife) but returned to the screen in 1991’s Only the Lonely.

She continued acting into her 80s, and she made her final public appearance in 2013 at a tribute to her longtime friend John Wayne.

O’Hara’s family says they played music The Quiet Man – her favorite of her many films – during the actress’ final hours.
