More tragic news out of the hip-hop world today, as up-and-coming rapper Jimmy Wopo has been shot dead at the age of 21.
Wopo was gunned down just hours after fellow artist XXXTentacion was murdered in Miami.
News of his passing was confirmed on Facebook by Wopo’s manager, Taylor Maglin:
“I lost my brother today and it’s the worst feeling in the world. He was destined for greatness and he wanted the best for his friends, family and community,” Maglin writes.
“We lost a great person today, but just know I will do everything in my power to make his memory live on forever. Love you bro.”
Maglin went on to encourage fans to celebrate Wopo’s life by continuing to enjoy his music:
“Jimmy unfortunately passed away and I ask at this time you keep his family in your prayers during this difficult time,” says Maglin.
“He had such a bright future and I can’t believe he’s gone.”
Though not yet a household name nationally, Wopo (born Travon Smart) was a sensation in his native Pittsburgh.
Collaborations with Wiz Khalifa and Hardo brought Wopo to the masses, and he was featured on several songs that found large audiences on Spotify.
His single “Elm Street” earned praise from such well-known artists as Pusha T and Juicy J.
Police say Wopo and a second man were gunned down in a drive-by Monday afternoon.
It appears they were specifically targeted by their assailants, who are still at large.
“This was an isolated incident, an apparent drive-by,” police said in a statement issued last night.
On Twitter, thousands paid tribute to Wopo, with many bemoaning the back-to-back tragedies of two up-and-coming rappers being slain on the same day.
“Two beautiful black souls taken tragically. Rest in heaven Jimmy Wopo and XXXtentacion,” wrote one fan.
“Idk about y’all but jimmy wopo was the only rapper who gave us pittsburgh kids hope we would make it out. our own city don’t wanna see us win. you’ll forever be in our hearts wopo,” tweeted another.
