Ralph Richeson Dies; Deadwood Actor Was 63

Ralph Richeson – the actor best known for his work on the critically-adored HBO series Deadwood – has passed away at 63.

Fans of the series, which ran from 2004-2006, will remember Richeson as the put-upon, but lovable Grand Central Hotel cook, Richardson.

Richeson began as an extra on Deadwood, but his unique look led series creator David Milch to cast in him in a recurring role as one of the show’s most memorable characters.

The eccentric, deer antler-obsessed Richardson (Richeson even inspired his character’s name) quickly became a fan favorite, and it seems the actor who portrayed was just as beloved by the cast:

“I don’t think there was anyone remotely involved in the show who didn’t love Ralph,” recalls co-star Jim Beaver. “He was kind, infinitely sweet and far, far smarter than his character. I will miss you forever, my friend. I raise antlers in honor of your passage.”

In addition to his work on Deadwood, Richeson – who was also an accomplished painter – appeared in small roles on Parks & Recreation and the 2008 Will Smith film Hancock.

Sources say Richeson passed away quietly at his home in Peru, Indiana. No cause of death was given.
