James Karen, Actor You Know From Everything, Dies at 94

James Karen, a veteran actor with an extensive big screen resume, passed away this week at his home in Florida, according to multuple outlets.

He was 94 years old.

James Karen

Karen died with over 200 movies to his credit, but he’s probably best known for his role as the developer Mr. Teague in the modern horror classic Poltergeist.

The long-time star also appeared in Return of the Living Dead, Invaders from Mars, China Syndrome, and Wall Street — among MANY other films.

One of the best known character actors of all-time, Karen once joked that nobody knew his name, yet everybody knew his face because he “did so much damn work.”

Actually, he may not have been joking about that.

Mostly known for his work in the movie world, Karen also played a key part on the finale of Little House on the Prairie and he worked with director Oliver Stone on three occasions:

1. As Lynch, the office manager at Jackson Steinem, where Charlie Sheen’s stockbroker character works, in Wall Street.

2. As Secretary of State William Rogers in Nixon.

2. As a Miami Sharks executive in Any Given Sunday.

Karen was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

Following a stint on Broadway, Karen moved to the land of television when he starred as Dr. Burke on As the World Turns and was the original Lincoln Tyler on All My Children.

Along with starring in thousands of commercials, Karen also worked as the TV and radio spokesman (“Why pay more?”) for Pathmark, an East Coast supermarket chain that was liquidated in 2015.

On the personal front:

Karen was married to the late Susan Reed, the beloved folk singer and zither player, from 1958 until their divorce in 1967.

The couple shared a son named Reed, whose godfather is the legendary Buster Keaton, a very close friend of Karen’s throughout his adult life.

In the horror genre, other notable movies in which Karen played a part include:

Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, Poltergeist, Invaders from Mars, The Willies, The Unborn, Piranha, Apt Pupil and Mulholland Drive.

And other television roles include:

Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show, Dallas, The Golden Girls, L.A. Law, Murphy Brown and The Waltons.

In the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead, Karen starred as the manager of a medical warehouse who inadvertently releases a gas that re-animates the dead.

He said it was the most fun he ever had in making a movie, saying in 2006 that he had some say in how the character died:

“It was the deal where he figures out he’s becoming a zombie and decides to incinerate himself in the crematorium.

“He kisses his wedding ring as he goes in. It was a very emotional scene, but it also got me out of being one of the rain-drenched zombies milling around outside the place at the end of the film.

“I didn’t really want to do all that muddy stuff.”

The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed Karen’s death.

May he rest in peace.

Al Matthews Dies: Actor Famous for "Aliens" Role Was 75

Actor Al Matthews, best known for his memorable role in the film Aliens, has died.

The iconic actor had retired to Spain, which is where he passed away.

He was 75.

75-year-old Al Matthews passed away at his home, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Matthews’ home was located in Orihuela Costa, in the Spanish Mediterranean province of Alicante.

He had retired to Spain in 2005.

Responders found Matthews when a neighbor called emergency services.

An autopsy is expected for the late actor.

Matthews is, of course, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Apone in James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens.

In the science fiction film, he starred alongside living legend Sigourney Weaver.

He delivered a truly famous line.

“Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for, breakfast in bed? A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm,” he said on screen.

The quote continues: “Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love the corps!”

That may have been Matthews’ most famous role, but was far from the only one. In fact, he appeared in over 30 films.

Matthews portrayed a fire chief in Superman III.

He played General Tudor in the cult classic The Fifth Element.

He also enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where he had a role on the UK series, Grange Hill.

And speaking of his work across the pond, in 1975, his song, “Fool,” reached #16 on the UK Singles chart.

Despite his retirement, Matthews reprised his legendary role as Sgt. Apone in the 2013 video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Perhaps part of what made Matthews’ role in Aliens so iconic and powerful — aside from his acting skills — was that he had been a real life marine in Vietnam.

“I spent six years in the United States Marine Corps;” Matthews shared on his personal website. “I hold thirteen combat awards and decorations, including two purple hearts.”

He reveals: “I was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant.”

That is one hell of an achievement.

His website blurb concludes: “I served with Kilo Battery, Fourth Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, of that I am very proud.”

Rest in peace, Al Matthews.

Matthew Perry Reveals THREE-MONTH Hospital Stay; Is the Actor Alright Now?

About five weeks ago, we quoted a report that claimed Matthew Perry was on death’s door.

It may have seemed like hyperbole to some, but the former Friends star has now come out and confirmed the following:

He was REALLY sick for a long period of time.

On Friday, the 49-year-old actor tweeted a few simple, albeit scary, words:

Three months in a hospital bed. Check.

Whoa there.

Three months in a hospital bed?!? That makes it sound as if the “death’s door” report was not so far off base.

Perry did not specify whether or not he’s finally been checked out of the hospital, but it’s safe to assume so based on that Tweet.

The update comes a little over a month after a rep for the actor confirmed in a statement to that “Matthew Perry recently underwent surgery in a Los Angeles hospital to repair a gastrointestinal perforation.

“He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heals.”

The outcome of this specific surgery depends on how early the ailment was diagnosed, along with how severe the perforation is and whether the patient had another disease or illness at the time.

We can’t really answer any of these questions when it comes to Perry.

Often times, conditions such as appendicitis, stomach ulcers, gallstones and/or Crohn’s disease can cause gastrointestinal perforations, as can a stabbing to the abdomen and abdominal surgery.

Moreover, smoking and excessive alcohol use can increase a person’s need for this procedure.

And it’s a safe guess that this is why Perry has been suffering.

The veteran star has open about his struggles with alcohol abuse and has even opened his own sober-living facility named Perry House.

“I couldn’t stop,” Perry told People Magazine in 2013 of his substance abuse. “Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”

A powerful voice in the battle against addiction, Perry also said the following at one point to The Hollywood Reporter”

“You can’t have a drug problem for 30 years and then expect to have it be solved in 28 days.”

This is a reference to the typical length of one’s stay at a treatment facility.

In honor of his road to recovery, Perry was presented with the 2015 Phoenix Rising Award.

“I’m an award-winning alcoholic,” Perry told The Hollywood Reporter. “I shouldn’t be getting an award; Phoenix House should be getting an award.”

Along with his iconic role on Friends, Perry also anchored such programs as The Odd Couple. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Mr. Sunshine.

We wish him all the best.
