Yordano Ventura Dead: Kansas City Royals Pitcher Was 25
Sad news today: Yordano Ventura is dead.
Ventura, a 25-year-old pitcher for the World Series-winning Kansas City Royals, died today in a car crash in the Dominican Republic.
It’s unclear exactly what happened to cause the crash, but according to Sports Illustrated, it’s believed that he was under the influence at the time of the crash.
A Dominican police chief first broke the news of the crash, tweeting in Spanish “Regrettable!! It is the player YORDANO VENTURA the person who died in an accident in Juan Adrian at dawn today.”
Later, the Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting for the Royals confirmed the news.
“It is with a heavy and broken heart that we confirm the passing of Yordano Ventura,” he tweeted.
“The club will release a statement soon. #RIPAce” — Ace, of course, being Ventura’s nickname.
The Royals released an official press release just a few hours ago to “regretfully announce the passing of Yordano Ventura, who perished in a car accident last night in the Dominican Republic.”
In the statement, Dayton Moore, general manager of the Royals, said “Our prayers right now are with Yordano’s family as we mourn this young man’s passing.”
“He was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with.”
“We will get through this as an organization,” Moore concluded, “but right now is a time to mourn and celebrate the life of Yordano.”
The statement also included some information about Ventura’s short career, which he spent entirely with the Royals “after signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2008” before “debuting for the club” in 2013.
He played two World Series with the team, helping bring them their second ever victory in 2015.
During the last game Ventura played, he wore a special hat that paid tribute to two other baseball players who died too soon: Jose Fernandez who died last fall in a boating accident, and Oscar Taveras who died in a car crash a few years ago.
Ventura’s teammates are already sending messages of mourning and love on Twitter.
“I love you Ace,” third baseman Mike Moustakas wrote. “I don’t know what to say other than I’m going to miss you a lot. RIP ACE.”
First baseman Eric Hosmer tweeted “ACE I love you my brother. I’m in disbelief and don’t know what to say. I love you ACE.”
Drew Butera, a catcher for the Royals, wrote “Gone way too soon. You will forever be my brother. My prayers are with you and your family. May you rest with the Lord now.”
Fellow pitcher Kyle Zimmer wrote “We lost a great one today. Hard to believe he’s actually gone. You will be greatly missed, Ace.”
Hunter Dozier said “I’m at a loss of words today.. Very sad day in the baseball community. You’ll be missed Ace.”
“When you scroll down and your whole newsfeed is talking about your brother,” left fielder Terrance Gore mused. “The impact the energy you brought to our team #GoneTooSoon”
“I am still in disbelief,” pitcher Matt Strahm wrote. “I am going to miss you Ace! The clubhouse won’t be the same without you.”
General manager Dayton Moore added “We love Yordano. We love his heart & who he was as a teammate & friend. He challenged us & made us better. We’re going to miss him.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this tragic death.

Kansas Boy Dies on World"s Tallest Water Slide
Tragedy has struck a family in Kansas.
According to CBS affiliated KCTV, a 10-year old boy named Caleb Schwab died on Sunday after riding the Verruckt, a ride Schlitterbahn Water Park.
The name of the ride used the German word for “insane” in its title and the ride itself has been dubbed the World’s Tallest Water Slide by the Guinness Book of World Records.
The structure stands 168 feet and seven inches tall.
Police spokesman Officer Cameron Morgan confirmed the sad incident last night, but was unable to offer any details regarding Caleb’s passing.
The victim has been identified as the son of a Kansas lawmaker Scott Schwab, who released a statement with his wife Michele soon after the horrible news went public.
It reads as follows:
Michele and I want to thank the Olathe and Kansas City, Kansas communities and all of our friends and family for their outpouring of support and compassion as it relates to the sudden loss of our son, Caleb Thomas Schwab.
Since the day he was born, he brought abundant joy to our family and all those he came in contact with. As we try to mend our home with him no longer with us, we are comforted knowing he believed in our Savior Jesus, and they are forever together now.
We will see him another day.
Your continued prayers are welcome and appreciated. We appreciate your understanding of our family’s need for privacy during this difficult time of grieving.
Here is a look at the slide in question:
House Speaker Ray Merrick told The Kansas City Star that Schwab’s family was “the center of his world.”
In a press conference on Sunday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the water park said the park’s rides are inspected every day and are checked by independent inspection agencies at the start of the season.
In a subsequent Tweet, Police Chief Terry Zeigler referred to the death as an accident.
Water park officials say Schlitterbahn will be closed Monday, while the Verrückt will remain closed pending a complete investigation.
The official website for the park says riders of the slide are “blasted up a second massive hill and then sent down yet another gut wrenching 50 foot drop for the ultimate in water slide thrills” after the initial ascent.
The website adds that the two to three riders per raft must have a combined weight between 400 and 550 pounds and all riders must also be at least 54 inches tall.
We send our condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Caleb during this impossible time.

Paul Rudd Celebrates Kansas City Royals World Series Win
Back in July, when the classic movie Clueless turned 20 years old, we asked a simple question:
What are the main cast members up to now?
On Sunday night, meanwhile, Paul Rudd gave us the most immediate answer: he’s on Cloud Nine.
The lifelong Kansas City Royals fan didn’t just get to bear witness to his favorite team winning the World Series.
He got to do it while actually in attendance at Citi Field in New York, and then he got to be doused with beer and champagne into the Kansas City locker room.
The Royals defeated the Mets in five games to capture the title, shocking the sports world in the clincher by scoring two runs to tie the game in the ninth inning.
They then became the first team in World Series history to score five runs in an extra inning, going on to win by a score of 7-2.
“I haven’t thought about anything. I can’t even believe that I’m standing here right now. I don’t know how I snuck in,” Rudd said to reporters after the contest, adding:
“I’ve been to every single World Series the Royals have been in.
“It makes no sense. It makes sense that they won because they’re incredible. It makes no sense that I’m here right now, celebrating this.”
So at least you can take some comfort, Mets fans.
It sucks your team lost in the World Series. But it made Paul Rudd happy and, come on, is there a more universally-beloved actor out there than Paul Rudd?
