Reema Lagoo Dies; Bollywood Icon Was 59 Years Old

The dark cloud of death is enveloping nearly all walks of the entertainment industry this week.

First, as previously reported, rock singer Chris Cornell committed suicide on Wednesday night after a performance in Detroit.

Then, we learned that Fox News Founder Roger Ailes had passed away due to complications from a blood clot.

And now we can confirm the sad news that famous Bollywood actress Reema Lagoo is also dead.

She was 59 years old.

The veteran actress passed away in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to multiple outlets.

The actress was best known for portraying the role of the mother of main characters in numerous Indian movies and soap operas.

She also acted in several Marathi language plays.

Among Lagoo’s most prominent roles were characters in such films as Aapke Hain Koun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Maine Pyar Kiya.

She kicked off her career in the late 1970s and rose to prominence for often acting alongside Salman Khan; almost always as his mother.

Monish Bahl, another frequent on-screen son and co-star, said the following upon learning of Lagoo’s passing:

I’ve worked with her quite a few times. Not just in Rajshri films, but in other films also. What can a person say (at this time). One says the same things over and over again about people and you meant it.

She was a wonderful person, a fine actress. It’s always been a pleasure to spend time with her on sets.

Added Alok Nath, who played Reema Lagoo’s husband, to Indian Express:

This is a horrible horrible news. I am just too sad to think about anything. She was such a fine actor to work with. This is very sad.

As you can see below, others who knew Lagoo well also took to Twitter to express their surprise and sadness:

NDTV reports that Lagoo’s last rites were held in Mumbai’s Oshiwara crematorium on Thursday afternoon.

Her funeral was attended by a multitude of former colleagues, many of of whom shared messages for her on social media.

Actor Aamir Khan visited Ms Lagoo’s family at home with his wife Kiran Rao and was later photographed at the sad gathering.

“This is very tragic. We are still in shock. She had no major ailment that we knew about,” Aamir told reporters about his co-star of films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Rangeela.
