Nick Menza Dies; Former Megadeth Drummer Was 51

Nick Menza, a musician best known as the drummer of Megadeth in the 1990s, died Saturday after reportedly collapsing on stage during a Los Angeles concert.

He was 51 years old.

According to CNN and other outlets, Menza was playing drums with his band OHM at The Baked Potato on Saturday night, May 21 when he suddenly collapsed during the third song of the set.

Paramedics arrived on the scene, but were unable to revive him.

Here is what a statement by Menza’s management team said soon after the tragedy took place.

“Nick collapsed during the third song into a set with his band OHM.

“Earliest reports indicate he suffered a massive heart attack and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.”

The Los Angeles venue itself was among the first to address the sad situation, writing, “RIP Nick Menza,” on its Facebook page.

Menza joined Megadeth in 1989 and played on four albums before leaving in 1998.

Upon learning of the news on Sunday morning, the band’s co-founder, Dave Muscatine, took to Twitter to mourn his former bandmate.

“TELL ME THIS ISN’T TRUE!” he wrote. “I woke at 4 AM to hear Nick Menza passed away on 5/21 playing his drums w/Ohm at the Baked Potato. #nickmenzarip.”

Former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman also jumped on media to grieve Menza’s passing.

“We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad,” he wrote, adding:

“I’m beyond sad, did not see this coming at all. RIP Brother.”

We send our thoughts and prayers to the loved ones of Nick Menza.

Rikki Rockett, Drummer for Poison, Diagnosed with Cancer

Rikki Rockett has been diagnosed with cancer.

The musician, best known as the drummer for rock band Poison, opened up to Eddie Trunk on his radio show that a tumor was discovered at the base of his tongue in June.

“Where I’m at now is, I went last week for my follow-up,” Rockett explained.

“Both doctors said I’m doing excellent, and they both have excellent prognoses. In early February, I get my PET scan, and that’s the end-all. That tells you if there’s any activity.

“They both said they suspect that there won’t be, and so I’ve got fingers crossed.”

Rockett went on to comfort fans by saying that this specific type of cancer is typically treatable.

“I did 35 rounds of radiation,” he said. “It was five days a week for seven weeks. But I went, ‘Okay, this is what I’m gonna do. I wanna beat it, so I’m just gonna go head first into this.’”

Why did Rockett keep the diagnosis a secret for so long?

The artist says this battle is the hardest thing he’s ever been through.

At one point, due to 16 canker sores, he could not even speak.

“I wanted to see how I would do with the treatment,” the rocker said. “I don’t want to hear anybody’s horror stories. I’m just gonna continue to get better and feel better. There’s nothing that looks like it’s there anymore. It looks like it’s in remission.”

We’re so very glad to hear that.

Phil Taylor Dies; Motörhead Drummer Was 61

Phil Taylor – the drummer best known for his time with the influential metal band Motörhead – has passed away at the of 61.

Phil Taylor

Former bandmate Eddie Clarke made the announcement on his Facebook page moments ago:

“He has been ill for sometime but that does not make it any easier when the time finally comes,” Clarke wrote.

“I have known Phil since he was 21 and he was one hell of a character. Fortunately we made some fantastic music together and I have many many fond memories of our time together. Rest in Peace, Phil!”

Clarke and Taylor – who was affectionately referred to by fans as “Philthy Animal” – played together in two iterations of the iconic British band fronted by rock legend Lemmy Kilmister.

Almost as well known for his classically rock star-like behavior as for his drumming, Taylor was arrested or seriously injured on numerous occasions during his time with Motörhead.

He can be seen sporting a neck brace in the music video for the band’s best-known song, “Ace of Spades.”

Taylor’s death was erroneously reported several times over the years, a fact that he joked about in a 2005 documentary.

Taylor’s final public appearance came last year when he joined Kilmister on stage at a concert in Brmingham, England.
