Vinnie Paul Dies; Beloved Drummer Was 54
Vinne Paul, a veteran musician in the heavy metal music industry and a founding member of the band Pantera, died this week from unknown causes.
He was 54 years old.
The drummer’s death was announced by Pantera on Saturday via Twitter, as the group simply posted the following message:
Vinnie Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away.
Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time.
The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time.
Paul helped create Pantera in the 1980s, along with his brother, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Their father a famous country and western songwriter and producer named Jerry Abbott.
The group enjoyed mainstream success with second lead singer Phil Anselmo.
Throughout its career, Pantera earned four Grammy nominations and charted nine albums on the Billboard 200, including its 1994 album Far Beyond Driven, which debuted atop the chart at the time of its release.
After Pantera split up, the Abbott siblings formed Damageplan in 2003.
However, the band was performing in December 2004 when Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed onstage during a concert in Columbus, Ohio.
Since 2006, Paul was the drummer for Hellyeah, a heavy metal band that included Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.
In the wake of Paul’s passing, some major names in the music business have shared their condolences on social media.
Alice Cooper Tweeted the following:
“Terribly saddened by the news of Vinnie Paul’s passing.
“Vinnie was a beloved fixture in the rock and metal communities and we will miss seeing him out on the road. His impact on heavy music is immeasurable. Rest In Peace Vinnie, condolences to your family, friends and fans.”
And then there was this from Slash:
“Tragic news about Vinnie Paul today.
“He was one of the warmest people I knew. A truly good & fun friend. We’re going to miss you more than you could possibly have known. RIP buddy.”
And this from Bret Michaels:
“Vinnie – You will be missed! You were an amazing human being & we had many great times together. A toast to you my friend, my prayers are with you!”
And this from Dave Mustaine of Megadeth:
“I just woke up in Belgium to the news that my friend Vinnie Paul has passed away. Another metal hero taken too soon. Say hello to Daryl for me.
“Rest In Peace, my dear friend.”
“Gutted to hear about the nicest guy in metal passing. Vinnie Paul showed us nothing but love. We’ll miss you Vinnie,” Papa Roach also wrote in response.
As we said above, we do not know how Paul died right now or even on which day.

John Blackwell Jr. Dies; Beloved Prince Drummer Was 43
John Blackwell Jr., a musician best known for having toured with Prince as the artist’s main drummer for over a decade, passed away on Tuesday.
He was 43 years old.
The exact cause of death is unknown at this time, but Blackwell was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year after falling ill and undergoing a number of tests in Japan.
The popular drummer’s wife, Yaritza, who updates her husband’s social media accounts, shared the news Tuesday on Instagram via an image of her grasping his hand.
She wrote that he died “peacefully” in her company and added:
“Thanks God for his life and thanks everyone for their support.”
Last July, his wife set up a GoFundMe account to cover Blackwell’s medical expenses; it has raised over $ 78,000 to date.
According to USA Today, the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office in Tampa has been asked for further information on Blackwell’s passing, but has not yet responded to this request
Blackwell took to stages around the world alongside Prince for 15 years.
He was well known and beloved for his unique style of drumming, having graduated from Berklee College of Music before being recruited by Prince in 2000 to play in his band New Power Generation.
Blackwell also performed with Patti LaBelle, Justin Timberlake and Cameo, among other big-time artists and singers.
He tragically lost an arm over the last year, as he underwent various surgeries in an attempt overcome his diagnosis.
In the fall of 2016, Blackwell told Tampa TV station WTSP-TV that Prince was like a father figure to him. The two friends were extremely close.
He said another close acquintence had recently told him that he could just imagine Prince calling for him to play as part of his band up in heaven.
“I can hear Prince now say, ‘I’ll just call John.’ No, you ain’t! I don’t want to do that gig. Not yet,” Blackwell, who took up drumming at the age of three, said at the time.
In response to his passing, many others within the world of music expressed their sadness and sent their condolences on social media.

Sib Hashian, Beloved Boston Drummer, Collapses and Dies on Stage
Sib Hashian, a musician best known as the drummer for classic rock band Boston, collapsed and died while performing on board a cruise ship Wednesday night.
He was 67 years old.
According to TMZ, per Sib’s son Adam, the veteran drummer was taking part in the Legends of Rock Cruise and was doing his typical thing on stage when he suddenly collapsed.
An onlooker says CPR was administered and a defibrillator brought out and used Hashian… but to no avail.
It was too late. He had already passed away.
This unique sea adventure set sail on March 18 in Florida; it is scheduled for stops in such places as Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
Initial reports indicate that the cruise will continue as planned, with other musicians set to perform tributes to Hashian on Friday and with Sib’s wife actually being the person who insisted the trip not come to an early end.
The singers on board paid tribute to Hashian via a memorial service this morning.
He had been booked for the cruise along with ex-Boston member Barry Goudreau and a roster that included Lou Gramm, former Beach Boy David Marks and ex-Kansas singer John Elefante.
Hashian joined Boston during sessions for the group’s first LP, after band leader Tom Scholz hired him to replace original drummer Jim Masdea.
Hashian then returned for the follow-up effort, 1978’s “Don’t Look Back,” but left during the making of their next release, 1986’s “Third Stage,” and was replaced at that time by Masdea.
Along with his talent on the drums, Hashian also gained a fan following for his very impressive afro.

After leaving Boston, Hashian remained on solid terms with a number of his former bandmates.
Over the years, he continued to work with other veterans of the group, drumming on guitarist Barry Goudreau’s solo LP, for example, and occasionally gigging with bassist Fran Sheehan and singer Brad Delp.
Sib is survived by his aforementioned wife and two daughters, Aja and Lauren Hashian.
The latter is in a long-term relationship with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson; she’s the mother of his second child and is often seen on his arm during red carpet appearances.
Expect to hear a statement later today from Johnson and others who knew Hashian well.
