Pattie Mallette: Mom of Justin Bieber Gushes Over Selena Gomez!
You don’t have to understand why Selena Gomez took Justin Bieber back. That’s her life and her business. Even if the news of their rekindled nonsense fills some of you with dread.
But you know who really, really loves that Jelena is a thing again?
Justin Bieber’s mom.
It seems like it wasn’t all that long ago that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were just two favorite strangers.
Back in early 2010, we fondly remember when Selena gave an interview about being scheduled to appear on stage beside Justin Bieber.
She mentioned at the time that she’d been asked by someone to not wear heels, but was going to wear heels anyway, and suggested that Justin Bieber should just accept that he’s short.
(For the record, Justin Bieber is currently 5-foot-9 but was almost certainly shorter at the time. Either way, he’s under six feet and therefore short)
The next thing that we knew, though, Selena and Bieber were dating. And, though the couple had their ups and downs, Jelena endured for years.
(You know, the first moment that I, personally, realized that I might actually like Taylor Swift a lot if I knew more about her, was when I saw a gif of her making a face of disgust when she watched her bestie Selena kiss Bieber, her then-boyfriend)
And then Selena and Justin broke up “for good.” It probably had something to with Selena’s failing health. It probably had something to do with Justin’s chronic bad behavior and alleged substance abuse issues.
But, after a sequence of events, Selena and Justin started riding bikes together and, well, doing other things together. Old habits die hard.
So, Justin and Selena are back together.
And it sounds like Mama Biebs herself, Pattie Mallette, is over the moon about it.
At the Justice Speaks Holiday Benefit Luncheon, Pattie spoke to People about her son’s rekindled romance.
“I don’t know so much about their personal relationship because he doesn’t share a whole lot, but I love her.”
Well, yeah. Most sons don’t really tell their mothers everything about their relationships.
“I support anything [he does], if he loves her I love her.”
It’s good to hear about parents being ride-or-die for their children’s choices. Some parents try to pressure their kids to get back with an ex, but it sounds like Pattie is letting Justin decide the direction of his own life.
But she definitely has her own thoughts on Selena:
“And I’ve met her and we have a special bond so I think she’s precious.”
Selena is precious. A national treasure, even.
But we get the feeling that even if Pattie knew the intimate details of Jelena 2.0 (though, honestly, what mother would want to?), she wouldn’t be divulging them.
“I can’t really speak on their relationship, that’s between them.”
Pattie didn’t mind talking about her son himself, though.
“I think he’s just keeping his focus on God, and really trying to figure out what counts and what matters.”
Well, Justin Bieber keeps choosing church over music, so that much is clear.
He’s attending a church with a sort of weird reputation, but Pattie’s been known to post “end times” stuff on Instagram, so maybe Hillsong Church is exactly what she wants for her son right now.
“I think he’s trying to be somehow normal in such an abnormal world, trying to find that balance.”
She could mean almost anything by that, but … sure.
“I feel like he’s growing up and I’m really proud of him.”
Well, we certainly hope that the days of Justin Bieber almost killing himself with alleged substance abuse are behind him.
“I think anyone with real love in their life is more grounded.”
Sure! There are lots of kinds of love, and she could be speaking of the Biebs’ faith here or of Jelena. Or of her love for her son, even.
“I think there’s so much confusion sometimes and facade in this Hollywood world, and so it’s important for us to find the ones that truly care and stick with them.”
Awww, it sounds like she thinks that Justin’s history of bad behavior is Hollywood’s fault. But lots of parents tell themselves that, right?
Justin apparently decided that he wanted to get back with Selena after realizing that he loved her when she almost died.
Honestly, we’ve given the Biebs a hard time (even within this post), but he really does seem to be different than he was, even a couple of years ago.
Maybe they’ll be amazing together, this time around.
We hope so, for both of their sakes.
