Richard Hatch Dies; Veteran Actor Was 71

Richard Hatch, a veteran actor best known for his role on Battlestar Galactica, died this week after a battle against pancreatic cancer.

He was 71 years old.

Hatch had recently been placed under hospice care prior to his passing.

Composer Bear McCreary made the sad announcement online this afternoon, writing:

“I share tragic news with a heavy heart. Richard Hatch is no longer with us. Goodbye Tom Zarek / Apollo.”

The television star got his start in acting with the Los Angeles Repertory Theater – along with shows in Chicago and appearances in off-Broadway production – prior to moving to the small screen, where he debuted in 1971 on All My Children.

A few years later, Hatch got his first primetime TV break when he was cast on The Streets of San Francisco, succeeded Michael Douglas in the process.

But Hatch really struck it big in 1978.

On the original Battlestar Galactica series, he created the role of Captain Apollo, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination.

This version of the drama only ran for a total of 21 episodes, however, prior to getting canceled.

Other memorable TV credits on Hatch’s resume included arcs on Dynasty, Santa Barbara and Ronald D. Moore’s 2004 Battlestar Galactica reboot.

On the latter, Hatch recurred as political activist Tom Zarek.

In response to his passing, Hatch was mourned online by and also lead Battlestar Galactica actor Edward James Olmos.

“Richard Hatch was a good man, a gracious man, and a consummate professional. His passing is a heavy blow to the entire BSG family,” wrote Moore.

Added Olmos via Twitter:

“.Richard Hatch you made our universe a better place We love you for it. Rest In Peace my friend @SoSayWeAll the Admiral!”

And actress Casey McKinnon chimed in as follows:

“R.I.P. Richard Hatch. Thank you for all your kindness and advice over the years. We’ll miss you.”
