With places in the competition diminishing, the remaining competitors continued to vie for a place in the Top 24.
Jennifer Hudson was the only judge with a steal left, and she knew she had to use it wisely if she wanted to find someone she could nurture into a hit.
Let’s break down the final night of the Knockouts…
Team Jennifer: Chris Weaver vs. Katrina Rose
Chris has been killing it every step of the way, so this was his round to win. He went with Nina Simone’s “I Put a Spell on You, ” and although he could have changed it up, it was still a breathtaking performance.
The vocals were on point and showed his range in a thrilling manner. With this one, we would be surprised if he was not sitting there in the final next month.
Poor Katrina had no chance going up against Chris. Her performance of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” was rather subdued. Her loud voice was no more, and it was clear she had been told that less is more.
The volume did rise throughout, but it was just no match for Chris, who won this round. Unfortunately, no steal was used on Katrina, so she was sent home.
Team Blake: Red Marlow vs. Megan Rose
Blake has been a great coach to the country singers in the past, and it appears that he’s continuing that trend this season. Red Marlow went with “Outskirts of Heaven” by Craig Campbell, and it was a stunning rendition.
Red’s signature country twang was very much present, and it sounded like a song Red could make his own given some more time to rehearse.
Megan went with Carrie Underwood’s “Smoke Break, ” and it was not a great performance. If anything, it was one of the messiest performances of the night. She lacked the spark, and charisma Red had, and it showed in her performance.
Red secured the win while Megan lost her place in the competition.
Team Adam: Anthony Alexander vs. Hannah Mrozak
Anthony went with “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes, and he successfully managed to make it his own. Everything about it was different enough from the original that Anthony should earn props for it.
The vocals were solid, and the performance was one of the most polished of the entire Knockout Rounds.
Hannah’s performance was similarly solid. She went with Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain.” It was very different to the one Anthony did right before, but it was still very good.
Anthony won the round, but Jennifer used up her last steal to take Hannah under her wing for the remainder of her time in the competition.
That means the Knockout Rounds are over, but there are some changes on the horizon. In the past, the show has aired a two-night extravaganza to get the top 24 singing for votes from America.
This season, those episodes were pre-recorded, and America had no input. It’s unclear how the judges will whittle them down, but we’ll find out next week.
