Robert Guillaume Dies; Benson & The Lion King Actor Was 89
Sad news out of Hollywood today, as Emmy-winning actor Robert Guillaume has passed away at the age of 89.
Reports of Guillaume’s death were confirmed this afternoon by his wife of 31 years, Donna Guillaume.
You may not be familiar with Guillaume’s name, but if you’re a film and television fan, you’ve almost certainly encountered and enchanted by his work.
For seven seasons, Guillaume portrayed the title character on the ABC sitcom Benson, a spinoff of the popular series Soap, on which he also starred.
His work on the two shows earned Guillaume a pair of Emmys.
While Benson may be the role fans most commonly associate with Guillaume, the Broadway alum went on to produce decades of acclaimed work on both stage and screen after his signature series came to an end.
Almost as well known for his rich baritone voice as he was for his comic timing, Benson was nominated for a Tony for his work in a 1977 production of Guys and Dolls.
Guillaume later became the first African-American actor to play the title role in The Phanton of the Opera.
To younger fans, he’s perhaps best known as the voice of Rafiki in the 1994 Disney animated classic The Lion King.
Throughout the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, Guillaume remained a television staple appearing in guest roles on such popular series as Good Times, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Saved By The Bell: The College Years, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and A Different World.
In his later years, Guillaume appeared in Tim Burton’s Big Fish, and was a regular on the short-lived, but critically-acclaimed Aaron Sorkin sitcom Sports Night.
After suffering a stroke in 1999, Guillaume returned to Sports Night, and his slight speech impairment and reliance upon a cane were written into the show in a memorable story arc.
The actor was widely applauded by health advocacy groups for his honest and courageous portrayal of life after a stroke.
All told, Guillaume racked up nearly 100 screen credits over the course of his 50-year career.
He is survived by his wife and four children.

Bambi Benson: See! I"m Over Lil Scrappy!
Bambi Benson is tired of waiting around for Lil Scrappy to return home and resume their toxic relationship, so she decided the best way to move on is to say goodbye to old trash.
Yes, Bambi actually threw out all of his clothes, and from the sounds of it, the Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star deserved it. Scrappy has allegedly been partying it up in Miami with his ex-girlfriend, Shay Johnson.
Not one to sit around and wait for her man to grow a set and return home, Bambi hopped around the house, grabbing all of Scrappy’s belongings and sending them on a way ticket to the trash.
“The thing that made [Bambi] really snap was when she heard [Lil Scrappy] was hooking up with his stripper ex-girlfriend in Miami,” the Bambi source told HollywoodLife.com.
“She heard he was spending money on [Shay], renting hotel rooms and partying with her all night. Bambi and Scrap had so many problems in their relationship because of Shay.”
“Bambi was always convinced Scrap was cheating on her with Shay and all he’d ever do was deny it. When she heard he was back messing with Shay, it was the final push she needed to get rid of his stuff.”
“He should have hired movers to come get all his stuff ages ago, but he’s a punk and doesn’t care about her,” the source continues.
“She could be dragging him way worse because he did all kinds of damage in their place. He trashed it and left her to fix it.”
“She had to pay for it, and he’s never paid her back. She’s got pictures of everything and if he doesn’t pay her the money he owes her soon she’s going to put him on blast.”
It’s crazy to think that Bambi was waiting around to begin with. If we’ve learned anything when we watch Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta online, it’s that Scrappy is not a one-woman kind of guy.
He wants to party, and that’s probably why he gets along so well with the likes of Stevie J.
If you look at Scrappy’s Instagram page, he seems to want everyone to think he’s been doing shows and not boning his ex-girlfriend.
What do you think about all of this?
Sound off below!

Ashley Benson: I"ve Been "Too Fat" for Roles!
Ashley Benson is not one to shy away from controversy.
And we’re not even talking about the time she dressed up as Cecil the Lion.
But Benson has been very outspoken when it comes to the pressure Hollywood puts on young actresses, once taking her own network to task for Photoshopping a poster of her and her Pretty Little Liars co-stars.
Benson is now covering the latest issue of Health Magazine and opening up about what it’s like to be a young actress.
“I get told all the time to lose weight,” she admits. “I got that a month ago. It’s just weird. With my stuff recently, it’s been, ‘You have to be skin and bones or you’re not getting it."”
Those who watch Pretty Little Liars online, or those who have seen any Ashley Benson picture, likely have their jaws on the floor right about now.
People have told Ashley Benson that she’s too fat?!?
Yup. More than once, apparently.
“It’s come up a few times in the last few years, like, ‘You’re too fat for this.’ And I’m just sitting here like, ‘Wait, what? Do you want a skeleton?"” she says.
Fortunately, Benson isn’t about to give in to these sexist morons.
“I feel good,” she concludes. “I don’t want to lose 20 pounds, because I don’t need to…
“There was a point where it was getting to where a size 2 was great. I’m a size 2, but I think that a size 4 is healthy. I think that all of these sizes are healthy.”
AMEN, Ashley. AMEN.
