Empire Season 3 Episode 13 Recap: Is Lucious Dying?!?

Empire has staged a comeback in Season 3, with storylines that are actually coherent and make us care for the characters.

On Empire Season 3 Episode 13, Lucious was shocked to hear that his condition was deteriorating and he was treated from his bed because he was not strong enough to go outside.

He lied to Cookie that he was struck down with the flu, so she used it as her opportunity to release some new music from Jamal. Jamal was initially against that, but he agreed after learning just how sketchy Lucious could be.

However, things took a turn when Cookie was interviewed about the track and opened up about her love for Lucious. She did not bank on this interview being uploaded to Empire X-Stream, and Angelo was not impressed.

A group of girls hounded the pair when they were voting and seemed a little too excited about the prospect of Cookie and Lucious rekindling their relationship. Angelo, stormed off, leaving Cookie alone.

Later, Anika visited Cookie after receiving death threats from Thirsty and Lucious. She asked Cookie to look after Bell if anything ever happened to her. Yes, these two women actually have a thing in common: Their love for their family.

Cookie agreed, with Anika saying she knew Cookie still loved Lucious, even though Cookie tried to deny it. This prompted Cookie to think about her past and the good times she had with Lucious.

Elsewhere, Hakeem struggled to come to terms with the news that he was being sued after the woman was attacked at his birthday celebrations. Thirsty decided to go forward with deposing the woman.

Hakeem was upset that Thirsty went too far and decided to release a song about being nice to women. Cookie and Jamal seemed to think he needed to do this to show off that he was not a misogynist like his music seemed to imply he was.

While all of this was going on, Nessa was introduced to Giuliana, who asked if it would be okay if she could stop by for a threesome. We wish we were kidding about that last part.

Nessa was shocked to learn Andre was saying they had an open relationship and questioned him about it. He said that was how he did business, but Nessa said she was not Rhonda and would not stand for it.

Andre then went to a board meeting with the proposals for the Vegas residency, but Lucious shot it down. The board members decided it was a good idea to go with Andre’s plan and Lucious was shocked to the core.

Finally, Angelo was revealed to be the winner of the election, and Lucious showed up to crash the party. He sang a song he wrote for Cookie that made her remember the good times. Did she fall back in love with him? It sure seemed that way.

Giuliana showed up, and there was an immediate connection between her and Lucious.

Empire Recap: Cookie vs. Lucious!

Cookie was not impressed with her ex-husband’s latest actions on the highly anticipated spring premiere of Empire, but did it live up to the hype?

When Empire Season 3 Episode 10 got underway, Cookie turned on Lucious because of him finding and leaking the information about Angelo letting a girl die.

In typical Lucious fashion, he laughed her threats off and told her if she wanted a war, then he’d fire the first shot. Not one to let someone threaten her, Cookie shocked everyone by putting Leah on stage and introducing her as Lucious’ mother.

This was met with a shocking response from the audience because he had previously released a song about his mother killing herself. Lucious was shocked to the core as his ex-wife stood on stage, cackling like a witch.

It was karma, and Lucious knew Cookie was coming after him. How far would each of them go to get one up on the other?

Pretty far.

Lucious continued his tirade against Angelo because he knew he was Cookie’s sweet spot, so he put a plan in motion to give a $ 300,000 for anyone who had information that would implicate “Dubious Dubois.”

It was bizarre, but also Empire at its finest. The sad thing about all of this was that it put the sons up against one another, with Andre pushing for Nessa to be the support act in concert.

Poor Hakeem thought he and his father were on good terms, but when he heard Cookie was the one who asked Tiana to perform, he kicked Tiana to the curb.

Andre could only laugh at his younger brother as he questioned why his father would betray him like that.

When the time came for Nessa’s performance, her mic crapped out, but Hakeem and Tiana were on tap to take over the stage. Nessa was furious and kicked Tiana off the stage, and the pair got into a huge scuffle.

While the audience was recording the whole thing on their phones, Shine was jumping up and down as though it was a WWE fight,  screaming at Nessa to “take the bitch out.”

It was hilarious, but Lucious told Cookie Jamal had escaped from his treatment facility and went on the run with Tori, who was apparently Empire’s version of Britney Spears and was played by Rumer Willis.

Tori had a terrible attitude and Cookie was not impressed with the way the young woman was speaking to her. It turned out that the pair were recording a track together.

It was not established whether Tori was using Jamal to get a big name on a comeback track after such a long time away. According to Hakeem she just disappeared after stripping on stage at one of her concerts.

When all of that drama was over with, Lucious introduced Anika (why the hell is she not in jail?!) as the new head of A & R and noted that she was the “DNA of the company.”

That did not sit well with Cookie, who showed up in the dead of night and started trashing the offices. In an explosive rant, she began trashing everything and narrating what she did to help the company.

It turned out that Cookie was helping her ex-husband a lot more than we were first lead to believe. When she was in prison, Lucious was visiting, and Cookie was giving tips on his recordings.

She pointed out that when he stopped visiting, his next album — which she had no say in — was his worst and the critics believed it.

Lucious did not like hearing the truth, so he told her he was going to kill her, but she hit him on the head with the baseball bat. He followed her up to his office, and she embraced him, but she got more revenge when she left him longing for her.

It was exactly what he deserved, but don’t expect Lucious to give up yet.

The episode was a roaring return for this hit drama series. It was the best episode of the series and set the wheels in motion for what is sure to be a solid conclusion to Empire Season 3

Other events found Becky getting closer to Thirsty in the hopes of getting Javier thrown out of Empire for his part in stealing her work. Her plan worked, but we’re getting the feeling Thirsty is going to want something in return for his efforts.

Empire Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Real Subtle, Lucious

On Empire Season 2 Episode 4, the Lyons looked to put aside their differences – at least long enough to capitalize on the latest duet by ‘Mal and ‘Keem.

Meanwhile, the FBI stepped up its offensive against Lucious, Cookie outwitted just about everyone and Uncle Vernon made a surprise reappearance.

Oh yes. You read that right.

Picking up where last week left off Empire Season 2 Episode 4 saw the feds storm Empire headquarters, and the Lyon Dynasty offices. And Lucious’ house.

Roxanne Ford is just going ham.

After greeting Roxanne without getting dressed first, Lucious plans his own offensive, announcing that the company will expand, not sit tight.

“Where we come from, if the cops raid your house that makes you a G. If the feds raid your house it makes you an O.G.,” he tells the board.

Even Mimi Whiteman approves.

Part of his strategy is for Jamal and Hakeem to team up for a new music video where they star as post-apocalyptic Black Panthers, fighting oppression.

Subtle, it is not. By a long shot.

The uneasy truce between Empire and Lyon Dynasty comes as Lucious figures out that this raid is actually a tactic giving away two facts:

  1. The FBI can’t pin Bunkie on him;

  2. They don’t have Vernon, either.

The music video shoot goes well until a photographer shows up with Jamal’s Rolling Stone cover, a lifesize portrait of ‘Mal and his beautiful soul.

Hakeem takes a weapon from the props and stabs Rolling Stone Jamal in the throat, then gets into an actual fight with his brother, then peaces out.

As for why Cookie let the shoot go haywire, she didn’t … but she did miss it after she was arrested on an outstanding warrant of suspicious origin.

In the interrogation room, she recalls the years she spent in prison as none other than Roxanne Ford shows up and explains the current situation.

Porsha gave her name after being busted hopping an MTA turnstile. Clearly, video shows it’s not actually Cookie … but this is Roxanne Ford here.

She quickly threatens Cookie with a parole violation – and failing that, with what she’ll do to her sons – if she doesn’t sing on what Lucious did to Bunkie.

After telling her adversary ”you need to kill yourself of that whack weave you got on top of your head,” Cookie cools off and thinks of a way through.

She tells Ford that she doesn’t know if Lucious did anything to Bunkie, only that Bunkie tried to stop Lucious from completing the Apex radio deal.

This lie makes a lot of circumstantial sense to Roxanne, as Lucious made the deal right after he got sprung from jail, and it also serves two purposes.

Essentially, Cookie thwarted the Apex deal and tied Lucious up with the FCC, while not actually implicating him in any crime(s). A stroke of genius.

Meanwhile, Andre is increasingly desperate to get his job back, even telling Rhonda that God wants him to. And the only way is to dig up Vernon.

If he can make the FBI go away, Lucious says he can have anything he wants. That’s enough for the couple to head into the woods, shovels in hand.

The headlights they assume are cops coming to bust them are actually those of Lucious and Thirsty, who followed them to the makeshift grave site.

Thanks to Thirsty’s corpse detection system (seriously), they find Vernon’s body and put it in the trunk. A pair of makeshift eulogies are quickly offered:

  • “I’ll miss you forever. God help me.” – Dre

  • “You will rot in hell, you snitch.” – Lucious

Dre gets his job back after a warm embrace from his father, and the next morning, Roxanne hops into her car … next to Vernon’s rotting carcass.

Who put it there and how will she react now?!

Also, who was the random woman in bed with Lucious at the beginning? Will ‘Mal and ‘Keem make up? Does the latter frequent jazz clubs often?

So many burning questions. Until next week!
