Empire Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: Faking It

Lucious Lyon has been the icy family patriarch for the last few years on Empire, so we’re glad he’s finally getting a comeuppance for all of the crap he’s pulled.

When Empire Season 4 Episode 1 got underway, Lucious was all over the place. His amnesia had royally knocked his socks off, and he did not know much about his family.

But, that was alright because he had Demi Moore’s Claudia by his side pulling strings to ensure he was not put in any situations that could make him do anything dangerous.

Here’s the thing: Any normal family would kick Claudia out of the house and warn her to steer clear of their family if she was getting that close to a patient.

As Cookie put it perfectly on the Empire Season 3 finale, they were paying her, so she had no right to comment on what they were doing to bring Lucious back.

As sad and desperate as it sounds, Cookie would love nothing more than to have her one true love return to his villainous ways. The way he cuts her off and claims he does not know anything about her clearly makes her want to vomit.

She tried so long to get him to see the light and ditch Giuliana for her that she probably feels she has been dealt a horrible hand.

Claudia is deluded, and we got to find out that she was very into Lucious during the performance at Empire’s 20th anniversary. She hated Cookie because she was fretting Lucious was going to remember her.

In any case, this is a primetime soap opera, so it will not be surprising when it ultimately turns out that Claudia has a link to someone Lucious wronged in the past.

There’s no way this crazy nurse just appeared out of nowhere. She has to be part of a bigger plan because we’re not buying that she was obsessed with Lucious from the get-go.

Not much happened during the hour. It was mostly the calm before the storm, and that’s okay. We got to see the multiple layers of this new and improved Lucious.

He has a conscience, no humor and is missing half of his leg. He put on quite the show during the Empire party to show off that all was right in the land of the Empire.

Unfortunately, Cookie thought it was the real deal and found herself having to go toe-to-toe with Claudia who was wearing Anika’s dress which she conveniently discovered in the closet.

Cookie sure knows a snake when she sees one, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch these two women fight for control of Lucious. He has to get his memory back sometime, but Claudia will see to it that his memories of Cookie are dark and full of misery.

Elsewhere, Andre held the keys to the company, but he was battling with the guilt of being instrumental in putting his father in the position he was in.

Shyne was worried about people ratting them out to the police, so he went on a mission to get rid of everyone who knew about it. Sooner or later, Andre will be the one to fess up.

One person who won’t be fessing up? The bomb maker, because Shyne sent him to hell with a gunshot to the head.

Diana Dubois was pressing on with her plan to ruin the Lyons, and it resulted in her crashing Hakeem’s home to threaten him with some incriminating pictures.

Cookie would have trusted her son if he told her the truth about what was going on. This whole thing is going to blow up in Hakeem’s face, and that’s not going to do him any favors.

Okay, so that’s a wrap. What did you think of the episode?

Empire Season 3 Episode 18 Recap: Did Someone Die?

After another season of Lyon family drama, Empire Season 3 Episode 18 closed off most of the central plot of the series in a shocking way.

When the episode got underway, Lucious got a phone call from his mother, Leah in the wake of her murdering Tariq in cold blood.

She was not impressed at being locked up by her son and Lucious said he was not willing to let her out of the house until she was back to normal.

Leah had a hilarious response to him.

“I’m not having an episode! I put steel in the skull of your enemy!”

Meanwhile, Cookie was still pissed about her son ditching her for Giuliana and Lucious, but Jamal was more concerned about Hakeem to worry about his mother.

What’s very odd is that the family does not seem fazed by Bella being missing, and instead, they seem to only care about the battle for power.

Hakeem seemed to be the only one who cared for his daughter, making posters and rounding up his friends to help find her.

We then got to see Andre running down his plan to kill Lucious with Shyne, who seemed a little too happy about all of the crazy developments.

Shyne asked what Lucious did to him to get him so worked up.

“Everything,” Andre says. “More than you could ever imagine. I’m the only one that knows what he truly is. That’s why I’ve got to kill him.”

Back at the mansion, Leah managed to get Anika to put her hands on the letter opener that killed Tariq, thus, implicating her in the murder of Tariq.

She’s a crazy woman, but she’s also pretty scary.

With Cookie in Vegas, Lucious reveals that he and Giuliana are franchising Leviticus, and Cookie told her ex-husband to back the eff off.

While Jamal was swearing he was off men to Becky, a new man appeared in his life, and it was obvious he had some secrets.

Hakeem followed Anika to the Dubois family and said he would do anything for his kid back. Mrs. Dubois hands Bella over and says she will be in contact.

Um, okay then.

When Cookie went backstage to get under Giuliana’s skin, Lucious showed his hand to the women.

“So Giuliana, it’s time for you to go kick rocks. Cookie is the love of my life. Always was, always will be.”

When Giuliana said half of the club belong to her, Lucious said the papers she signed earlier were signing her share away.

Yikes.

Lucious then revealed the Vegas show was When Cookie Met Lucious, and all seemed to be right in the world of Empire.

Jamal’s new boyfriend was revealed to be part of the Dubois family and was being used to take the family down.

Anika was then arrested at the hotel for the murder of Tariq. Like we did not see that coming. Hey, at least she’s getting some sort of comeuppance.

Cookie and Lucious then decided to ditch Empire and travel the world together and give it all to Andre, but Andre’s plan to kill Lucious went into effect.

Andre was too late, and an explosion went off. Who died?

Nobody, apparently.

Three months later, Lucious was in a coma. When he woke up, however, he had forgotten everything and everyone.

Oh, the drama.

What did you think of it all?

Empire Season 3 Episode 17 Recap: A Gruesome Death

Empire has been struggling to keep up the pace in the drama department this season, but things always seem to take a turn for the better when a character dies.

On Empire Season 3 Episode 17, Cookie rallied up her team to cause some drama at Leviticus Vegas. When the episode got underway, Cookie, Candace, and Carol make their way into the venue.

When Giuliana and Lucious spot Cookie on the security camera, Lucious is tasked with getting rid of them. Cookie causes a huge scene.

The episode flashes back two weeks to good old Lucious saying he will find the person responsible for Bella’s disappearance, but he had to deal with Giuliana and the Vegas deal first.

When Thirsty questioned Giuliana about financial records she carries around with her, she gets Lucious to fire him. Yes, he actually fired Thirsty. Like, what the hell?

Cookie bumps into Thirsty and asks him to join her at her house. The meeting consists the Lyon sons, Shyne and some other people who were ready to take Giuliana down.

However, the meeting fell apart when all of them started bickering with one another, prompting concerns that they could not work as a unit.

Cookie turned to her sisters, Porsha, Chicken, and Marcel.

The women take to Vegas to put their plan in motion. However, it hit a snag when Carol could not seduce the security guard on duty.

All was not lost when it was revealed that the security guard was checking out Becky. Becky flirted with him, and the women managed to sneak on through.

Cookie took the financial ledgers straight to Charlotte, who was shocked.

“This is really bad,” she says. “Money laundering, consorting with criminals…”

Just when Cookie thought she was on to something, Lucious strolled in with a bag of money

“I didn’t know Mormons took payoffs,” Cookie barks, but Charlotte replies, “I didn’t know you people were so prone to stereotypes.”

When Lucious and Cookie left the room, but Andre emerged from the shadows, and they were closer than just friends.

In New York, Cookie tells Jamal to release his album to screw up the publicity of Lucious’ album. However, her son told her that he was holding off on it.

The reason? He was joining Lucious in Vegas. Cookie was pissed and started bickering with both Jamal and Hakeem.

Surprisingly, Lucious came to her defense, saying, “Stop ganging up on her,” he says. “She came for me hard and had her feelings hurt. She just needs to lick her wounds.”

Later, Andre visited Cookie to tell her about him and Charlotte. He said she was not a fan of Lucious being in Vegas.

Finally, Tariq managed to save Bella and returned her home. Just as Tariq and Lucious are mending fences, Leah kills Tariq with a letter opener.

Something tells us Leah was in on the plan all along.

What did you think of all the twists?

Empire Season 3 Episode 16 Recap: Absent Child

Did the Lyons manage to take down the Dubois family?

That was their plan on Empire Season 3 Episode 16 when baby Bella was taken from them, and the families waged war against one another.

The episode got underway with the Lyons going to meet the Dubois family, looking as glamorous as ever. Cookie literally had to be held back from leaping across the table to open a can of whoop-ass on Mrs. Dubois.

“Bitch, do you want me to jump across this table?” Cookie squeals. Mrs. DuBois fires back, “You feelin’ froggy? Leap.“

While everyone is trading insults, Anika chimes in that the true issue is who the heck got Bella ousted from the family. Of course, the Dubois clan denies it.

At the police station, it turned out that several motions had been filed, so there was no way the family was getting Bella back any time soon.

“This is very odd,” the supervisor say. “Several motions have been filed… they’d take a month to untangle. You’re not going to see her for some time.”

Um, WTF?

Surely this could not happen in real life.

Cookie rallied the troops and told them that they needed to get their $ hit together if they had any hope of getting Bella back. Thirsty felt like that best way to get her back would be for Anika and Lucious to speed up the divorce.

While Lucious and Jamal bickered about their song for the Vegas residency, Cookie and Andre got to work fighting Jamal’s corner.

However, by the flick of a switch, Andre tried to choke Anika, by remembering that she killed Rhonda.

“You think you can kill my wife and kill my kid?” he screams. “I’m gonna make you pay!” Um, alright then.

Something tells us Andre is back off his meds.

“Do it! I deserve it!” she cries. “I wanted so badly to be a Lyon, I sold my soul, and now my baby… I deserve to suffer.”

Oh, Anika, you’ve suffered enough since joining that godforsaken family.

Hakeem then decided to hit up Empire X-Stream to reveal that the Dubois family had Bella taken from him. This quickly erupted into a full-blown protest, with Mrs. Dubois claiming she had nothing to do with it.

While this was going down, Cookie slapped Nessa across the face for supporting Andre’s horrible decisions.

“Bitch, next time hold your mouth!” Cookie Lyon is, like, the Queen of shade.

Later, Cookie got Shyne’s thugs to rough up Angelo for some answers.

“You know I wouldn’t go this far!” he says.

“You know those things your mama said about me being ghetto and hood?” Cookie asks.

“She was right. You need to talk to your mama, because I know she knows where my grandbaby’s at.”

Cookie returned to Lucious and opened up about the fact that Angelo had no idea what happened to Bella. They were interrupted by Giuliana, who wanted to know about the changes with the residency deal.

“I did 17 years for you!” Cookie snarled at Lucious, who sided with Giuliana.

Giuliana fired back: “Thank you for that. But I’ll take it from here.”

BURN.

The final scene gave us the reveal that Mrs. Dubois did, indeed, have Bella and was ready to make her part of the family.

Empire Season 3 Episode 14 Recap: Love Is a Smoke

Will Cookie and Lucious ever be able to make their relationship work?

That was one of the bigger questions on Empire Season 3 Episode 14 when it became apparent they worked better with other people.

We picked up with a flashback of Lucious writing a song for Giuliana called “Crazy Crazy 4 U.” We then got to see Lucious trying to woo a younger version of Nia Long’s Giuliana.

It’s certainly a different way to use the flashbacks, one that showed us at home that Cookie has not always been the endgame for Lucious.

“Was that before or after you divorced me?” Cookie asks, bringing Lucious out of daydream land.

Lucious asks, “Does it matter? We both know love and romance are all bull, right?”

“Well, it’s hot,” Cookie says.

Cookie then decided to open up about the fact Angelo hinted that he would be proposing to her if he won the primary.

“Maybe you and he will have a much smoother ride than we did,” said Lucious. Even though she expected Lucious to end the relationship, Cookie was happy he said it.

Lucious then told Cookie that the Vegas deal needed a stake to the heart.

“This woman Andre is dealing with is very dangerous,” he explains of Giuliana.

Meanwhile, Andre found a way to get the board involved in his plans for Nessa to get some hit songs for the Vegas deal. The commissioner approved because he was the one who brought up the whole Vegas deal.

Tory was reeled in to help out, but Andre was not impressed that she was late to the meeting. That’s when she dropped the bomb that Lucious had her working double duty on Inferno.

Andre then turned to Giuliana to find out what her deal was with Lucious.

“We met a long time ago,” she explains, “and he didn’t remember me, so clearly I didn’t make an impression.”

We then got a flashback to Giuliana and Lucious meeting in a casino. She played roulette and Lucious watched on as he tried to get her attention.

Cookie then tried to get the truth, with Lucious confirming they met years ago. He then told Cookie about how corrupt Rafael was.

Lucious came up with a plan to have Tory release the song she was making for Nessa on Empire Xstream.

Tiana and Hakeem were offered to introduce it in order to get revenge on Nessa for the way she acted.

The launch went well, but Hakeem was pissed at the lengths Tory was going to immerse herself in the family. Tory felt like Jamal was not a fan of competition and that’s why he had no friends.

Elsewhere, Anika wore her wire to meet Tariq and Cookie had nothing but praise for her.

Anika stepped up for us,” Cookie says. “Gotta give her props for that. And she gave us Bella.”

Lucious packed a bag of money for Tariq to leave town and never look back. It seems Tariq is a goner.

We then got to find out what happened between Lucious and Giuliana. Apparently, she stole $ 10 million from him.

“Do you have any idea what I had to do to get that money?” Lucious says. “Bridges I burned? Friends I hurt?”

She said she would pay him back if the Vegas deal went through, but she could not without it.

If you thought the drama was over, Angelo proposed to Cookie on live TV, with Cookie going crazy backstage at him putting her on the spot.

He then said all the illegal things he had done for her, but his microphone was still on. Mrs. Dubois then steps in, claiming she will get rid of the Lyon family.

Back at Leviticus, Lucious managed to get Giuliana on board and got rid of Andre and Nessa. Shyne decided to round up the troops to take Lucious out.

Empire Season 3 Episode 13 Recap: Is Lucious Dying?!?

Empire has staged a comeback in Season 3, with storylines that are actually coherent and make us care for the characters.

On Empire Season 3 Episode 13, Lucious was shocked to hear that his condition was deteriorating and he was treated from his bed because he was not strong enough to go outside.

He lied to Cookie that he was struck down with the flu, so she used it as her opportunity to release some new music from Jamal. Jamal was initially against that, but he agreed after learning just how sketchy Lucious could be.

However, things took a turn when Cookie was interviewed about the track and opened up about her love for Lucious. She did not bank on this interview being uploaded to Empire X-Stream, and Angelo was not impressed.

A group of girls hounded the pair when they were voting and seemed a little too excited about the prospect of Cookie and Lucious rekindling their relationship. Angelo, stormed off, leaving Cookie alone.

Later, Anika visited Cookie after receiving death threats from Thirsty and Lucious. She asked Cookie to look after Bell if anything ever happened to her. Yes, these two women actually have a thing in common: Their love for their family.

Cookie agreed, with Anika saying she knew Cookie still loved Lucious, even though Cookie tried to deny it. This prompted Cookie to think about her past and the good times she had with Lucious.

Elsewhere, Hakeem struggled to come to terms with the news that he was being sued after the woman was attacked at his birthday celebrations. Thirsty decided to go forward with deposing the woman.

Hakeem was upset that Thirsty went too far and decided to release a song about being nice to women. Cookie and Jamal seemed to think he needed to do this to show off that he was not a misogynist like his music seemed to imply he was.

While all of this was going on, Nessa was introduced to Giuliana, who asked if it would be okay if she could stop by for a threesome. We wish we were kidding about that last part.

Nessa was shocked to learn Andre was saying they had an open relationship and questioned him about it. He said that was how he did business, but Nessa said she was not Rhonda and would not stand for it.

Andre then went to a board meeting with the proposals for the Vegas residency, but Lucious shot it down. The board members decided it was a good idea to go with Andre’s plan and Lucious was shocked to the core.

Finally, Angelo was revealed to be the winner of the election, and Lucious showed up to crash the party. He sang a song he wrote for Cookie that made her remember the good times. Did she fall back in love with him? It sure seemed that way.

Giuliana showed up, and there was an immediate connection between her and Lucious.

Empire Season 3 Episode 12 Recap: Strange Bedfellows

Hakeem Lyon is not the luckiest member of the Lyon clan.

That was addressed on Empire Season 3 Episode 12 when his birthday celebrations became a cause for concern for the people closest to him.

Meanwhile, Jamal continued to get closer to Philip, but did that mean hurting D-Major in the process?

When the episode got underway, Hakeem was partying the night away in celebration for his birthday. He floated the idea of a live stream of the events, but Andre was very much against it.

However, it was quickly revealed he and Lucious were just trying to make Hakeem think they could not make the birthday party. Lucious also revealed he was not getting his son an expensive car he wanted.

We then switched gears to Jamal waking up after the night before with Philip. On his cell phone, D-Major came out in a live stream, but things took a crazy turn when Jamal’s ex arrived at his apartment.

He found Philip rushing to get dressed, and Jamal told him to leave. D-Major was having none of it and said he came out for Jamal. This presented Jamal with some decisions as he wondered which man was best for him.

After some wise words from Cookie, Jamal had D-Major kicked out of Empire. This also paved the way for Philip to punch Major, but Jamal was less than impressed and said Major was going through tough time.

Surprisingly, Philip did not run off and ditch Jamal for his blatant favoritism over his ex-boyfriend.

At Hakeem’s birthday party, the venue was not impressed when they learned none of the family members would be attending and refused to pay Hakeem a fee.

The youngest Lyon then took the party to the Empire bar.

That’s when two thugs appeared and helped Hakeem. He got his fee and gave the men watches. Things turned dangerous when Tiana appeared with some friends.

The thugs started fighting with everyone, and the party was shut down. Tiana’s friend was injured, and she was upset that Hakeem did not ask about her.

Andre then gave Hakeem a verbal beat down and shut the live stream down, telling his brother he was done at Empire. Hakeem decided to spend the rest of his birthday with Bella.

Yes, he does remember he has a kid. Lucious was shocked by his son appearing in the dead of night and chatted with him about fatherhood. They bonded, and Hakeem left with Bella.

While all of this was going down, Giuliana continued to pursue Andre to get closer to Lucious. At the conclusion of the episode, she got close to Andre before revealing her master plan to a thug.

She wanted to get closer to Lucious to take everything from him. Yes, we have another money grabber, you guys!

In addition, Anika returned to town, and Leah offered to murder her. We’re not even kidding about that last part. This show is just crazy. Anika decided to get close to Tariq so the case could be dropped.

Empire Season 3 Episode 11 Recap: Cookie"s Guilt

Did Cookie come clean to Angelo about the way she lashed out at Lucious?

That was one of the more pressing questions as the matriarch of the Lyon family worried about her actions and what they would mean for her future.

Meanwhile, every other character appeared to be scheming, and Nia Long made her highly anticipated debut as Lucious’s ex-wife.

When Empire Season 3 Episode 11 got underway, Cookie showering to get rid of the blood that came from Lucious when she went all bat-shit with a baseball bat.

Confused, she went to visit Lucious to talk about her actions when it became apparent he was worried about the world finding out. In the process, he thought the best move was to say someone broke in.

Lucious was less than impressed with Cookie and seemed eager to play the victim, but Cookie was having none of it and left the situation while throwing some subtle shade at Anika.

Anika was worried about her future when Tariq showed up to get the details about who Lucious had killed. Anika reluctantly agreed to open her mouth if she and her daughter were placed in witness protection.

Anika — presumably knowing it would be a death sentence — left her daughter with Hakeem and sprinted out of the city on a bus, but does that mark Grace Gealey’s final appearance on the show?

Probably not. If the actress were really departing the series, there would have been more fireworks. As you probably know if you watch Empire online, Anika was the one who tormented Rhonda before killing her.

As for the baby, Tiana took a shine to her. She did not want to like the baby because Hakeem’s her man and he stepped out on her several times, but who could not smile at a baby?

Will Hakeem put the kid back in the care of Lucious, or will he and Tiana try to play happy families in Anika’s absence?

More to the point, will Becky finally get the A&R job now that Anika’s out of the picture? We have no idea, but we can’t wait to find out.

While all of this drama was going on, Shine and Andre went to meet another gangster. Shine is trying to emulate the career start Lucious had: Turning to a life of crime to get the money for a company.

The thing Shine is missing is someone as smart and quick-witted as Cookie Lyon, but will Nia Long’s new character who is the ex-wife of Lucious be that person?

It sure seems that way. Fans will no doubt be hoping for Cookie and the woman to have a fist fight, but that was apparently saved for behind the scenes.

We are left in a very interesting place with these characters. Previous episodes of Empire have struggled with pacing because most of the plot hinged on the guest stars, but the powers that be have managed to keep everything flowing better this time around.

What did you think of the drama? Are you digging Nia Long’s unnamed character?

Nia Long: Feuding With Taraji P. Henson and Empire Staff?!?

Empire returned from its lengthy hiatus last night, but it appears most of the drama is taking place on the set as opposed to the show.

Nia Long will be appearing later on Empire Season 3, but new details have emerged that she was a nightmare to work with.

The 46-year-old was allegedly feuding so badly with series star, Taraji P. Henson that producers had to look at alternative ways to film scenes between the pair because things got out of hand.

So, what caused the feud?

Apparently, Nia was not very nice to the hair and makeup folks working on the juggernaut. It even resulted in them filing a complaint because she was so difficult to work with.

It’s deplorable to appear on a show of any caliber and act like you own everyone, so if this turns out to be true, it’s horrid.

Empire has become the go-to show for big celebrities to appear on the small screen. This season alone we’ve already had the likes of Remy Ma, Taye Diggs, Mariah Carey and Rumer Willis.

Eva Longoria and Demi Moore are slated to appear in the coming episodes, but hair and makeup crew have never lodged a complaint about anyone else on the show.

Nia’s actions must have been horrible for them to even think of complaining about her, but she was apparently being rude and changing her mind about her look at the last minute.

Taraji apparently got wind of the way Nia was treating the staff and was not having any of it. Rightfully so. Taraji has been part of the show for over two years, so she probably looks at the staff members as really close friends.

In another incident, Nia threatened to sue the show when she did not get a goodbye after her final scene was filmed. In the world of Empire, the assistant director generally thanks the cast member for their final scene.

Disaster had struck the set when Terrence Howard took an allergic reaction, and everyone was busy helping him out. Either that or the A.D. did not think much of Nia’s attitude and did not care about wishing her well and just wanted her off the set.

We’ll probably never know, but Long was apparently chanting that she had it as part of her contract that the A.D. would thank her after her final scene, so she said she was suing the show as she departed.

TMZ spoke to one actor on the show who revealed they would never dream of working with the actress in the future.

As you can probably expect, Nia’s representatives have refuted the claims.

“We stand by our comments this morning that Nia has always, and continues to be, a consummate professional on set. In respect to her working relationships with the cast, she came onto this project, in the first place, because of her long-standing friendship and professional relationship with Terrence Howard.”

“We are not aware of any complaint, suit or case against her from anyone involved in the show, and we find the timing of all of these stories to be very suspicious, given that the series returns tonight.”

Did anyone expect her reps to confirm their client was difficult to work with? The comment about the show’s return was a bit of a stretch.

Empire is one of the only shows that does not need to create fake news to thrive.

What do you think about all of this?
