Empire Recap: A Lyon In Rehab

Empire has been struggling to maintain the quality of Season 1 for quite some time now. Viewers have been clamoring for the show to return to its roots.

Thankfully, Empire Season 3 Episode 9 was one of the best episodes of the entire series. There were no crazy guest stars, or crazy plot twists.

The episode finally linked back to some of what has happened in previous episodes and it left me wondering whether the second half of Empire Season 3 would right the ship.

We’ll start by chatting about Cookie. She witnessed first hand just how much of a tough time Angelo was having winning over the public, so she stepped in.

Cookie has proven time after time that she’s a delight at public speaking. She can effortlessly get people on her side with a matter of words. No, we’re not talking about her getting Lucious to kill people.

We’re talking about her going back to her roots and thinking of the people. She knows what they want. You can probably only imagine Diana’s surprise when she noticed that Cookie was taking matters into her own hands in order to get Angelo’s fight for mayor to the masses.

Diana did not like this and turned to Lucious to broker a deal in order to have Cookie well away from Angelo. The collateral was that Lucious would get rid of someone who had some dirt on Angelo.

When Lucious followed through on his end of the deal, Diana stepped out because apparently Cookie’s big speech sent Angelo to the front of the early polls. She called it “the Cookie effect.”

Very fitting. As you probably know if you watch Empire online, Lucious does not take too kindly to people backing out on deals, so he exacted his revenge on her by making Angelo look bad in front of a camera.

Yes, you guys, our squeaky clean Angelo is not so squeaky clean after all. When he was 17-years-old he got a DUI and left a girl to die in the car.

With that development, it was obvious that Cookie was second-guessing her relationship with him and just like that, Lucious’ mission was completed.

Wrong. As much as Lucious thought everything was done, Tariq was still conspiring against him. This meant Empire’s assets were frozen, meaning there was no business.

Lucious knew Tariq was to blame, so he went to the FBI and caused a scene. It made Tariq look like a crazy dude in front of his colleagues.

The plot thickened when Shine offered up $ 50 million to have Empire resume normal business, but Shine had an ulterior motive. He wanted on the board.

Meanwhile, Andre finally decided to say goodbye to Rhonda in a heartbreaking scene. However, Rhonda gave him some tips on how to take over the Empire and Nessa was definitely involved.

Rhonda’s parting scene also involved Andre swearing to take Anika down for murdering her and her baby. Andre then threw his wedding ring into the water.

After that, he showed up at Leviticus, apparently to party with Shine. However, he was quick to point out that Shine liquidated his assets two-weeks before Empire being frozen, therefore confirming Shine’s part in all of the drama.

The pair made an alliance, with Andre revealing his intention to murder his father.

Gulp.

Could Empire be about to lose Lucious? Would anyone care at this stage?

Finally, Jamal entered rehab after Cookie witnessed just how bad his drug addiction was.

That’s a wrap on the fall run of Empire! What did you think of the developments?

Empire Season 2 Episode 8 Recap: No More Lyon, Just Hakeem

Last night’s Empire Season 2 Episode 8 was not the most over the top installment – last week set the new high water mark there – but it had its moments.

Hakeem battled Freda in a rap throwdown for the ages, but that was merely the subplot for so many broader developments across the Lyon landscape …

Perhaps the biggest bombshell is that Anika is knocked up … by Hakeem! Rather than staging a scandalous reveal, however, there is no reveal.

Rather, she spends the bulk of Empire Season 2 Episode 8 trying to tell him, only to be rebuffed, and told that “he’s in love” with his protege Laura!

It was an interesting night for Hakeem overall, as he continued to voice his disapproval of Laz, leading to a shoving match between the two dudes.

One that ends with Cookie slapping Laz and instructing him never to lay a hand on her sons. Romance is one thing, but this mom looks out for #1.

As for dad, he did not go Full Lucious Lyon like he has at some points this season, although he was pretty adamant to get the Slipstream deal done.

He’s also passionate about his protege Freda, to the point where he’s calling out his own son in public (a great PR maneuver if ever there were one).

Yet when he finds out Cookie and Jamal are secretly working together on the track that Pepsi wants Jamal to record, he seems only mildly annoyed.

When Jamal suggests his parents combine efforts for this one project, he’s mostly alright with it. For one reason or another, Lucious went soft here.

Perhaps he just felt he had the other hand and humored her as the stakes were high; Cookie and Lucious wagered on who would win the battle.

If Hakeem won, Lyon Dynasty would release Jamal’s album, while if Freda won, Empire gets Hakeem back. The rap battle lived up to its billing, too.

You’ll have to watch Empire online to truly appreciate it, but Hakeem was declared the winner and again, Lucious sort of rolled with it fairly calmly.

What’s his endgame? No one knows, but Hakeem says he’s dropping the Lyon from his name. Just Hakeem. We’ll see how dad feels about that.

Finally, the cliffhanger found Anika in disguised as a car driver taking Laura home. Do we have another abduction on our hands? Until next week …
