Ariana Grande Obliterates Spotify Records with "Thank U, Next"

Just weeks after ending her engagement to Pete Davidson, Ariana Grande dropped a new single, “Thank U, Next.”

The powerful anthem, a tribute to her exes, is smashing music records.

Its lyrics have also inspired November’s hottest meme.

Billboard Woman of the Year Ariana Grande keeps setting new records only to surpass them.

In recent days, she’s been doing it with the same song, as she shared on Instagram.

“Thank u, next has surpassed 100 MILLION streams on spotify in only 11 days,” reads a graphic shared on social media.

The graphic puts that in perspective: “it is the fastest song in HISTORY to reach this milestone.”

Ariana shared the image with a very grateful black heart emoji in the captions.

Keep in mind that that’s only her Spotify success.

It doesn’t include people listening on YouTube — or pirating it.

Her record-smashing feat doesn’t include people using other streaming services.

It also doesn’t include those of us who eschew streaming music and instead immediately purchased it from iTunes or Amazon.

Part of the appeal is that it’s a beautiful song.

The song’s real meaning also contributed to its success.

“Thank U, Next” is an anthem to Ariana’s exes — to three, in particular.

Ariana had an 8-month relationship with Big Sean from 2014 to 2015.

“Thought I’d end up with Sean / But he wasn’t a match,” Ariana sings.

Starting in the summer of 2015, Ariana dated backup dancer Ricky Alvarez for about a year.

“Wrote some songs about Ricky / Now I listen and laugh,” Ariana sings.

Famously, Ariana got engaged to Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, and broke things off in October.

“Even almost got married / And for Pete, I’m so thankful,” Ariana’s lyrics affirm.

On a sadder note, she dated Mac Miller for two years starting in 2016. He died just a few months ago.

“Wish I could say, ‘Thank you’ to Malcolm / ‘Cause he was an angel,” Ariana sings bittersweetly.

“Thank U, Next” appeals to people as a song and as an athem.

Some can relate in their own lives — they really appreciate their past loves and past relationships.

Others are just Ariana Grande fans and love to hear how at peace she is with her romantic past.

But it’s more than just a song, folks. It’s a meme.

For ages now, social media has been filled with “one taught me love, one taught me patience, one taught me pain” posts.

These posts, quoting lyrics from Ariana’s song, can do everything from critique three films or three characters or three condiments.

Of course, Ariana’s release of this song such a short time after ending her relationship with Pete Davidson has fueled conspiracy theorists.

There are people in the world who believes that all celebrity activities, from relationships to their art to overdoses and deaths, are a scripted facade.

These are the same people who use words like “illuminati” and “Deep State” with total sincerity.

So they think that for some unknowable reason, Ariana and Pete were “ordered” by, like, Beyonce or George Soros to get engaged, then split.

According to this admittedly hilarious theory, Ariana had this song prepared and mixed for whenever they were ordered to break up.

Why? Maybe, like, mind-control embedded in the song. It did release right before election day!

Ariana being a talented and passionate musician with the resources to pull together a song quickly is apparently too simple of an explanation.

There is a glaring omission from Ariana’s song — her ex Graham Phillips.

They performed together on Broadway along with current Dynasty star Elizabeth Gillies.

You might know Graham from The Good Wife or from his more recent appearance on Riverdale as a seriously awful dude.

Our guess is that the fact that they dated in 2011, when Ariana was mostly just known as a Nickelodeon star, is a factor.

Also, she probably just views Graham as a friend whom she once dated. There’s a difference between that and an “ex.”

In case you were wondering if there was bad blood, we looked into it and found no evidence of hard feelings.

In fact, they staged a mini-reunion this past summer with another former castmate.

Ariana was probably right to narrow her scope of exes to a handful.

Selena Gomez Obliterates Instagram Record Once Held by Beyonce

Selena Gomez turned 26 over the weekend, and the photos from her birthday bash were dazzling.

The pics were so good, in fact, that the Instagram “likes” poured in with dizzying alacrity.

Selena’s birthday post got so much love so quickly that it absolutely destroyed the previous record … which had belonged to Beyonce herself.

While Hailey Baldwin enjoys Justin Bieber, for better or for worse, Selena Gomez is living her best life. It’s what she deserves.

Remember how Beyonce broke the internet with her twin reveal photo?

That pic received a staggering 7.8 million in only 12 hours.

The pregnancy reveal pic that preceded it received 6.4 million within the first few hours. Beyonce is a powerhouse, there’s no question.

But when the battleground is Instagram, Selena has no equal.

It took Selena’s birthday party post only 13 minutes to reach 1 million likes.

(The number of likes is currently near 9 million and will likely grow by the time that you even finish reading this sentence)

That’s no real surprise.

Selena Gomez has been the reigning champion when it comes to Instagram followers for some time. She is a social media titan and the one to beat.

Even those who come close — like Ariana Grande, Christiano Ronaldo, and Beyonce — can’t quite surpass her follower count.

Not yet, anyway.

Selena is also paid more for Instagram ads.

We all know that Instagram follower counts matter for more than just bragging rights and branding.

Celebrities, no matter how wealthy, can make a small fortune with a few normal photos of themselves, promoting one product or another.

Selena Gomez apparently makes a whopping $ 800,000 per Instagram endorsement. That means that she takes a photo wearing or holding a brand and makes more than three quarters of a million dollars.

Beyonce makes $ 700,000 per photo. Of course, price is based upon more than just follower counts. It also has a lot to do with things like social media engagement.

When it comes to Instagram ad prices, nobody beats out Kylie Jenner — who maks rakes in $ 1 million per pic.

It’s easy to frame this conversation as a competition.

A competition between Selena and Kylie over who makes the most per Instagram ad.

A competition between Beyonce and Selena over who has the most followers, or who got the most likes the fastest.

Instead, let’s keep this in perspective. This was a broken record. One day, perhaps very soon, someone else will get a million likes even faster than Selena.

Social media is fueled by the people on it, and there are more people every single day who sign up for Instagram and click that like button.

So, again, it’s not a competition. Though, if the race to a million likes were a competition … Selena is the current reigning champion.

Selena’s 26 birthday is a big deal.

Not because 26 is a huge milestone. It isn’t. Every birthday after 21 is a grim reminder that we all grow less socially relevant with each passing day as our bodies begin to fail and crumble beneath the weight of time.

No, this birthday is a huge deal because … there were genuine doubts that she would make it this far.

She has been battling Lupus for years. Just a little over a year ago, Selena was rushed to the hospital with kidney failure.

Had it not been for a life-saving kidney transplant, it’s unclear if Selena would still be among the living.

And even now, she continues to struggle with Lupus. Selena’s birthday is worth celebrating for that alone.

Ted Cruz OBLITERATES CNBC For Biased GOP Debate Questions

During last night"s Republican Presidential Debate, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz went OFF on CNBC for its questions to the candidates earlier in the debate.

Cruz derided the moderators for lacking in substantive questions … ironically, as a non-answer to one of the more substantive questions of the evening.

It was clearly a premeditated move ripped from the playbook of Newt Gingrich in 2012, in which Gingrich deflected attention from a personal controversy.

Newt took CNN to task for grilling him about his ex-wife, earning thunderous applause and riding a wave of momentum to a primary win in South Carolina.

Cruz wasn"t in the hot seat for any particular crises, but when asked a perfectly reasonable question about problem solving and the debt limit, went OFF.

Unlike Jeb Bush"s failed hit on Marco Rubio, Cruz played right into the hands of his conservative base and likely came away with his desired objective.

"Let me say something at the outset," Cruz said. "The questions asked in this debate illustrate why the American people don"t trust the media."

"This is not a cage match. And you look at the questions … Donald Trump, are you a comic book villain? Ben Carson, can you do math?"

"John Kasich, will you insult two people over here? Marco Rubio, why don"t you resign? Jeb Bush, why have your numbers fallen?"

"How about talking about the substantive issues!"

Reminded that he did not answer the question, Cruz doubled down on the media and kept the attack going. "Let me be clear," Cruz said.

"The men and women on this stage have more ideas, more experience, more common sense, than any participant in the Democratic debate."

"Nobody believes that the moderators have any intention of voting in a Republican primary," Cruz said as the moderators tried to interject.

"The questions being asked shouldn"t be trying to get people to tear into each other, it should be what are your substantive solutions to people at home."

Eventually, he was cut off, at which point he clashed with the CNBC panel further for not allowing him to answer the actual question.

Wild. All we can say is that Donald Trump won by shortening the debate … otherwise, an actual cage fight might have broken out.
