School Employee Admits to Losing Her Virginity to 15-Year-Old Student

This is yet another story of a school employee having sex with a minor.

A former middle school employee was arrested after she confessed to police.

The woman claims that she “fell in love” with her underage victim … and that she lost her virginity to him.

Hannah Siboyeh is a former employee of Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

In July of 2017, she was 23 when she began an elleged sexual relationship with an underage student.

The student has not been identified, of course, as he is both a minor and the victim.

But it sounds like the former Labay Middle School student was 15 at the time.

According to court documents, Siboyeh has acknowledged that what she did was the result of “one mistake after another.”

Authorities learned about this on April 5th, 2018, after another student came forward to an assistant principal.

They had apparently been at the student’s home and they noticed that Siboyeh was allegedly in bed with the student.

Court documents state that the student reported the two “lying in bed together and that weird noises would be coming from the room.”

That is, emphatically, not appropriate for any adult and minor. Good for that student for recognizing that and having the bravery to come forward.

When investigators spoke to witnesses, they confirmed that the boy and Siboyeh were engaged in a “boyfriend girlfriend” type relationship.

Court documents say that Siboyeh didn’t exactly hold out under interrogation.

When confrontated by law enforcement at the middle school, she is said to have “started crying and stated that she lost her virginity to” the victim.

“She admitted that she loved [the teen] with all of her heart,” the documents read.

“She described the relationship as one mistake after another,” the documents say. “And admitted that it was her fault because she was the grownup and was older.”

Not that it makes anything else okay, but it’s good that she is at least not blaming the minor. It is always the adult’s responsibility.

Siboyeh posted the $ 10,000 bond on Friday and was able to go free.

She is of course instructed to avoid any contact with her victim or his family.

Additionally, she is to avoid going within 200 feet of any sort of school or child care center, and she is also to give that clearance to the boy’s home.

She has been instructed to avoid contact with anyone under the age of 17.

A little less intuitively, she has been forbidden from accessing the internet. Presumably so that she does not contact her vicitm … or any new ones.

Mollie Tibbetts, Missing Iowa College Student, Found Dead in a Field

The body of Mollie Tibbetts, a 20-year old student at the University of Iowa who went missing about a month ago, has been found.

But questions still remain regarding just what happened Tibbetts, whose vanishing made national headlines about a month ago after she failed to return home after a job.

Mollie’s father, along with two sources close to the case, have told Fox News and other outlets that her corpse was discovered in a field in Poweshiek County.

This is not far from where she went missing.

No details have been released as of this writing…

… but police have scheduled a press conference for 5 p.m. EST at which time, according to Mitch Mortvedt of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, there will be “quite a bit of news” passed along.

Tibbetts was last seen jogging on July 18 in the small community of Brooklyn, Iowa, which is located about an hour east of Des Moines.

After she did not respond to messages from her boyfriend and after she did not show up for work, the authorities were notified of Mollie’s disappearance.

From there, investigators launched an extensive search for Tibbetts across the area.

This included in search parties that combed through ponds, fields and surveyed the scene from up in the air.

Moreover, investigators looked through her digital footprint, including her Fitbit, to try to trace her final steps.

Tibbetts was a rising sophomore at the University of Iowa studying psychology.

She had been staying with her boyfriend in his older brother Blake Jack’s home, dog-sitting while the siblings were out of town.

Over the past few weeks, Tibbetts’ family pleaded for her safe return and had tried to remain positive and hopeful that Mollie would be found alive.

Her dad, Rob Tibbetts, returned home to the San Francisco area after spending weeks looking for his daughter, The Des Moines Register reported on Sunday.

“The bottom line is somebody knows something,” Rob Tibbetts previously told Fox News, adding Brooklyn is a small city and “you can’t do anything there without someone seeing it.”

Her mother, Laura Calderwood, called the mystery around what transpired to Mollie “excruciating,” adding in an interview with ABC:’

“[There are] no words to describe how you feel when you don’t know where or how your child is.”

At least now her parents know, although the news is as horrific as they likely feared.

No arrests have been made as of this time.

Georgia Southern Student Accidentally Texts the N-Word to Black Roommate

A lot of discussion of racism these days centers upon politics at the highest level, institutionalized racist norms, and white supremacist violence. But individual racism is still alive and well in America.

That is what a black student discovered when her roommate accidentally sent a text message to her that was about her.

It featured an appalling use of the n-word. But the white student who sent it is desperately claiming that autocorrect is to blame.

This deeply unsettling story begins with a pleasant if somewhat anxious exchange via text messages.

“Hey Courtney! My name is Nwamaka,” the blue text bubbles say. “I wanted to introduce myself since I am going to be your new roommate.”

“Hey!” Courtney replies. “Did you just call me? So sorry lol my phone is on silent.”

Some people have their phones making noise all of the time and . . . I’m not sure how they stand it. That said, Courtney may have just been uncomfortable answering an unexpected call.

Nwamaka explains: “It was an accident!”

“Haha it’s all good,” Courtney replies. “I went to add you as a contact and I accidentally called you too.”

That is all well and good … until the next gray text bubble from Courtney.

“Her insta looks pretty normal,” Courtney writes. “Not too n—–ish.”

Yes, that was her using the n-word. With -ish as a suffix. We wish that she were saying needlefish or something, but no.

“OMG I am so sorry!” Courtney immediately wrote. “Holy crap.”

“Damn spell check,” Courtney says, blaming her phone’s autocorrect function for conjuring the literal worst word in the English language. “I did NOT mean to say that.”

Courtney then attempts to assure Nwamaka that she totally didn’t write the n-word.

“I was texting Hannah and I meant to say ‘triggerish,"” she claims.

Triggerish is, notably, not a word. People use new words all of the time (I say yeet at least three times a week), but it’s difficult to see how anything else makes sense in this sentence.

“Meaning like you seem really cool,” Courtney pleads. “Nothing that triggered a red flag.”

Uh, we sort of see that. Though there’s a huge hole in this argument still.

Courtney then says: “I am so embarrassed! I apologize.”

It was not Nwamaka who made the screencaps of their conversation go viral. That was her friend, Dajah Morrison, who was outraged over the texts that her friend received.

“Triggerish is not a word at all,” Dahah told WSAV. “The closest word to that is triggerfish. So for her to cover those things up, it just didn’t add up.”

Many have pointed out that there’s another layer to Courtney’s words.

Have you ever tried to write the word f–k on a phone for the past few years? Android or iPhone, it doesn’t matter.

Your phone is going to try to turn your word into duck. People commenting on this story have noted that, though they’ve had their share of autocorrect embarrassments, they’ve never seen the phone “correct” to a slur.

A lot of autocomplete or autocorrect style programs learn based upon a person’s writing habits. Some have said that, at best, Courtney is suggesting that she uses the n-word a lot in other conversations. 

Which is … not much better.

As you can see in the attached image, Georgia Southern released a statement apologizing for the incident.

“The use of such racist comments is offensive and unacceptable and in no way reflects the attitudes or values of Georgia Southern University,” the letter says.

The statement continues: “To be clear, there is no place for bigotry or racism on our campuses.”

There is no mention of any disciplinary action being taken towards Courtney over her allegedly accidental slur.

For the rest of us, this is a great time to remember that those of us who are not black should not use the n-word. Not ending with an -er or with an -a.

Not in text messages. Not in conversation. Not on political signs. And no, not even when we’re singing along with music.

Ohio Teacher Sentenced to Jail for Sex with Female Student

Brooke Rosendale, a fifth grade intervention specialist and volleyball and basketball coach in Ohio, was been sentenced to three years in jail.

The ruling came down on Wednesday, after Rosendale pleaded guilty to a sexual relationship with a 13-year old female student.

According to an arrest report (obtained by People Magazine), the Riverdale School employee engaged in sexual contact with the unnamed teenager in January and February of last year.

The incidents did not happen on school grounds, the document states.

Based on this same report, Rosendale (who was convicted on a charge of third-degree felony count of sexual battery) was not the teacher of the girl with whom she slept.

Instead, the two met via the school’s extracurricular programs.

Rosendale, who resigned her position one months after this inappropriate relationship ended, must now register as a Tier 3 sex offender going forward.

She also must pay $ 225 in restitution to the family of her former student.

In court, Rosendale’s attorney, Peter Halleck, said his client has accepted responsibility for her actions and has expressed remorse to him on multiple occasions.

However, Hancock County Common Pleas Judge Reginald Routson, the judge who oversaw the case, came across as skeptical that Rosendale truly understood her actions.

“You stepped across a line, a taboo that cannot be violated,” Routson said, according to court records.

He added:

“There cannot be any sort of relationships between teachers and students and you betrayed a very important trust.”

Rosendale apologized Wednesday to the parents of the student, who appeared in court but did not wish to make a statement in public.

“I want to apologize to the family,” she said. “I know I hurt them and I apologize.”

Rosendale got engaged in July of 2016 and was scheduled to get married on November 4, 2017, per a section on TheKnot.com.

It’s unclear at this time whether or not Rosendale went through with the wedding.

In March of 2017, the teenager’s parents reported these sexual incidents to the school district.

After the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office launched a criminal investigation, Rosendale resigned from her position.

She has also relinquished her teaching certificate.

Florida Teacher Arrested for Giving Student Sex, Drugs

A Florida middle school teacher has been arrested due to an allegedly inappropriate relationship with one of her 14-year old students.

According to Volusia County Sheriff’s Department, Stephanie Peterson Ferri was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with two counts of lewd or lascivious battery, along with one count of transmission of harmful materials to a minor.

The details behind these charges are pretty gross.

Authorities say the 26-year old science teacher at New Smyrna Beach Middle School started a sexual relationship with an eighth grader in November.

Police were alerted to this sordid situation on Tuesday, February 27 after the student (who is a minor and therefore unnamed in this report) told his parents about these naked encounters.

The young teenager told officials that the relationship began after Peterson sent him a bunch of naked photos of herself.

It was then taken further when the two would start meeting late at night, with Peterson picking up her sexual prey at his home around 11 p.m. on various nights and dropping him back off around 1 a.m.

Police also allege that Peterson bought this individual marijuana and smoking pipes.

At one point, the victim’s grades started to slip as a result of this romance, which only prompted Peterson to tell him that he couldn’t tell anyone about what was going on, lest they get in major trouble.

But the 14-year old finally realized that only his teacher would actually get in trouble for her misdeeds.

Peterson was arrested yesterday and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail.

She is being held on a $ 25,000 bond.

As you can see below, this case has elicited quite the range of emotions and reactions on Facebook.

Some people think Peterson is disgusting, others think the young man was anything but a victim in this situation.

Here’s a look at the wide range of responses:

Peterson reportedly began teaching as a substitute teacher in this same school district in 2010, prior to becoming a full-time teacher in August of 2013.

She started teaching at New Smyrna Beach Middle School three years later.

School district spokesperson Nancy Wait says that Peterson resigned on Monday for “personal reasons.”

Detectives are asking parents to talk to their kids, and anyone with information about any additional potential victims is asked to contact the VCSO Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574.

Student Claims Airline Forced Her to Flush Emotional Support Hamster Down Toilet

A Florida college student says she was left in tears late last year after a Spirit Airlines employee said she wasn’t permitted to bring her emotional support hamster on board a flight.

Yes, her emotional support hamster.

Before you laugh at this story, however, keep reading down below. It’s actually pretty sad…

According to The Miami Herald, Belen Aldecosea, a 21-year old from South Florida, was flying home from college due to an urgent medical issue in November.

She says she checked with Spirit on multiple occasions prior to the day of her flight and was assured that the hamster, Pebbles, would be allowed on the plane.

(Yes, Belen also says, a doctor certified the hamster as an emotional support companion. We assume this means she had a note from the physician.)

However, upon arriving at the Baltimore airport, Aldecosea was told the opposite.

She was told that Pebbles could not accompany her on her trip.

With no friends or family members anywhere in the area, and being too young to rent a car, Aldecosea says she was at a loss about how to proceed.

She claims an airline employee suggested she flush Pebbles down a toilet.

“One of the representatives started giving me little tips like, ‘Oh you should just leave her, or flush her down the toilet,’” Aldecosea told The Herald.

She didn’t want to murder little Pebbles, but Aldecosea explained to the newspaper that she didn’t have “any other options.”

Therefore, crying uncontrollably, she went through with the recommended act, figuring it was more humane than releasing Pebbles outside, only for him to eventually get hit by a car.

“She was scared. I was scared,” Aldecosea told the publication. “It was horrifying trying to put her in the toilet.”

We can only imagine.

Aldecosea has hired an attorney and is considering filing a lawsuit against Spirit Airlines for the conflicting information that she says led her to flush her emotional support pet.

In response to Aldecosea’s allegation, Spirit released the following statement on Thursday:

After researching this incident, we can say confidently that at no point did any of our agents suggest this Guest (or any other for that matter) should flush or otherwise injure an animal. It is incredibly disheartening to hear this Guest reportedly decided to end her own pet’s life.

Our reservation representative, unfortunately, did misinform the Guest that a hamster was permitted to fly as an emotional support animal on Spirit Airlines.

When the Guest appeared with the hamster at the airport, our agents offered and the Guest accepted an opportunity to take a later flight, so she had time to find other accommodations for the animal.

Our records indicate she was scheduled to take the 10:39 am flight on Nov. 21, but ended up taking the 7:42 pm flight that day.

We did offer the Guest a voucher for the inconvenience, but we never heard back from her.

This story has gone viral because… well… an emotional support hamster was involved.

But also because airlines of late have been cracking down on emotional support pets in general.

Missouri State Student Emails Every "Claudia" on Campus to Correct Tinder Mistake

A Missouri State student named Hayden accidentally swiped left on a beautiful female student named Claudia’s Tinder profile, and responded by sending an email to every single Claudia with a plea to let him undo his mistake.

Is this adorable? Creepy? Both? You’ll have to read and decide for yourself.

And, of course, then there’s the intended Claudia’s response.

“Hello all Claudias of Missouri State,” his email begins.

We don’t know how many Claudias that includes. It’s a great name with a great history, but kind of rare.

Even rare names can crop up a lot when you’re talking about a student body population of about 26,000 students.

“First off, my name is Hayden, and I made a rookie mistake on Tinder. I accidentally swiped left on Claudia’s profile (left is bad), and I really wanted to swipe right.”

Oh gosh.

“If Tinder provided last names, this would be much easier, but it doesn’t, so I have to describe the profile to you.”

This is taking those old “missed connection” stories and adding another layer. Color us intrigued.

“The age next to her name was 20, but in her bio it said she was actually 18 and didn’t know how to change it.”

It sounds like they have similar proficiencies in using Tinder. Kind of a promising start to their relationship?

“The pictures she provided had some with her friends and her mom in them. In her bio she said some of her friends were single and if anyone liked them better that’s fine but they couldn’t have her mom (had me deat btw).”

Yeah that’s genuinely funny.

“So, like I said, I meant to swipe right but that didn’t happen.”

That can happen to anyone if they’re just flipping through profiles and make the motion one time too many by mistake, but maybe he’s 

“My instagram is Hayden.Moll if you want to look me up.”

He has almost no photos on there. It’s hard to tell if he sanitized his profile just for the occasion or if he just needs to get better friends if he wants an Instagram profile that’s going to grab a thirsty fellow student’s attention.

“I’m just asking, if this is your profile that I described, please message me back with ‘right’ or ‘left’ just so I know if you’re interested or not.”

Like a do-it-yourself Tinder. Amazing.

But what is he hoping to get out of all of this?

“If you choose ‘right’ we could totally get some doughnuts or something but if you choose ‘left’ that’s cool too. No worries!”

That’s a polite thing to say. In part for politeness but also because, well, sometimes when men feel rejected they respond with murder. Hayden was good to include that reassurance.

 “If it’s none of you Claudias and you know even more Claudias, spread the word please. It would be much appreciated!”

Well, the young woman in question did reveal herself. Her name is Claudia Alley.

Public responses have ranged from comments admiring the story to finding humor in it to others disparaging them or the entire idea of meeting someone through an app.

“He was smitten..”

“He was desperate to meet her because he could just sense she has a great personality.”

“She just wants to know who does his eyebrows.”

“Um, stalking?”

“That twink is out of his league.”

“I feel sorry for people out there that cyber stalk someone before and rely on screens during courtship.”

“No dear, not creepy at all.”

What matters, though, is what Claudia thinks of all of this.

Apparently, she’s not only entertained by the story going viral — she’s also amused enough by his endearing email that she’s agreed to go out to get doughnuts with him.

A lot of the time, viral relationships like this fall apart. You know what else falls apart? Non-viral relationships. Not everybody clicks.

That doesn’t mean that we need to start singing a funeral dirge for this “relationship.” They’re literally just going out for doughnuts.

We would point out though that Hayden seems to be pretty tall and Claudia is either exclusively friends with Amazonians or is extremely short. Sometimes height differences are the secret ingredient that make relationships click and stick.

We hope that they’re both better at a doughnut date than they are at using Tinder.

Teacher, 44, Caught "Romping" in Car With 13-Year-Old Student

A teacher named Rachel Gonzalez was arrested after a boy’s father caught her and his son “romping” in her car.

While other teachers have been arrested for sexually preying upon their students, this story is particularly unsettling.

Because the teacher was 44 and the son … was 13.

The only silver lining to this disgusting story is that Rachel Gonzalez was caught and arrested.

An underage student’s father notified Bay City, Texas police of an inappropriate relationship between his 13-year-old son and a 44-year-old teacher.

We hope that we don’t have to explain why the boy’s name has been withheld.

The teacher’s name is Rachel Gonzalez.

Apparently, what first clued in the father was discovering conversations on the teen’s phone about their inappropriate sexual relationship.

We can’t imagine how horrifying it must be to discover that your very young son is being preyed upon by a much, much older sexual predator.

It must be even more chilling to find that the woman in question has been entrusted with the care and well being of hundreds of children.

It appears that Rachel Gonzalez may not be the boy’s teacher.

The school district reported that it had received “a report of an alleged inappropriate relationship between a student at one campus and a BCISD teacher from another campus.”

Given that there are reports of Rachel Gonzalez having been (at least at one time) a fourth grade teacher, that makes sense.

(Fourth graders, folks, are typically 9 or 10, not 13)

“The District immediately involved the Bay City ISD Chief of Police in order to evaluate the report, and quickly turned the matter over to the Bay City Police Department for a full investigation.”

According to Bay City police documents:

“During the investigation Detectives got a search warrant to seize and access the phone belonging to the victim. At that time, they were able to locate evidence indicating there was an improper relationship and Detectives requested warrants for the arrest of Gonzalez.”

They served those warrants on December 22nd. Rachel Gonzalez was then super arrested.

“She was transported to the Matagorda County Jail where she was booked in on charges of On-Line Solicitation of a Minor and Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student.”

And, in case you’re worried about this woman seeing the inside of a classroom instead of a jail cell, the school district also added:

“The teacher in question resigned from BCISD prior to the District learning of the allegations.”

The school district’s Board of Trustees President released an additional statement:

“While I cannot provide additional information at this time that could possibly compromise the legal process underway or the safety and well-being of BCISD students.”

The Board President then added:

“I want to assure our parents and community that student welfare is our top priority. We are committed to providing a safe school environment for BCISD students and staff.”

We should note that there are a few things that are unusual about this case:

-The scope of the age difference.

-That she appears to have been a teacher from another school altogether.

-The extent of the victim’s youth, because 13 is (usually) barely pubescent. We may be talking about a 7th grader, here.

It’s horrifying. We wish that we knew what sort of screening process schools should implement to prevent the hiring of sexual predators.

All that we can really suggest is that, for prospective teachers who think that they might be attracted to future students: perhaps, like diabetics who dream of becoming bakers, they should pick another profession before they ruin some student’s life.

Texas Teacher Arrested for Picking Up Student at Chick-fil-A, Banging Him in Parking Lot

A Texas history teacher was arrested this week and charged with sexual assault with an ex-student after meeting up with him at a local Chick-fil-A restaurant.

People Magazine was the first outlet to report the incident.

According to court records, Michelle Schiffer has been charged with engaging in an improper relationship with a student who is now 16 years old.

He was 15 at the time of the sexual encounter.

Schiffer is 23.

The teacher told authorities that she met the unnamed student at the aforementioned fast food restaurant before they went to a friend’s home to have sex.

The student, meanwhile, told authorities that Schiffer picked him up once at a park in her car – and then the inappropriate twosome drove around the neighborhood before having sex in a parking lot.

This second allegation was reported by local TV station CW39.

The same network adds that Schiffer and the student had sex on multiple occasions.

Schiffer teaches world history at Cypress Springs High School in Cypress, Texas.

She was ordered to appear in court on Wednesday to face her charges, while a judge has set bond at $ 30,000.

Official records indicate that Schiffer posted the amount later that day and is now a free woman.

Having admitted that she also smoked marijuana with this student in the car, it’s also safe to classify her as a messed up woman.

The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District has said in a statement that the 23-year old was immediately removed from campus and placed on administrative leave once they learned of the charges.

We’d have to imagine she’ll soon be fired.

“We will continue to protect our students and not tolerate relationships of an inappropriate nature,” the statement reads.

No word on the scandal from Chick-fil-A, although there’s no real reason for the chain to speak out.

It continues to provide consumers with delicious chicken sandwiches, while not being a big fan of gay people.

Laura Ramos, Married High School Teacher, Arrested For Having Sex with Special Ed Student

A married Connecticut high school teacher, Laura Ramos, has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a special education student.

She also allegedly denied and destroyed evidence of the acts.

Ramos, 31, was charged with second-degree sexual assault.

A wife and a mother, she admitted to having sex with an 18-year-old student while teaching at Central High School in Bridgeport, Conn.

Authorities say they were called to the high school after another student reported the liaisons to officials, local station WFSB reported.

The student, a.k.a. “witness 1” in court documents, told officials that Ramos began texting him first “as a ‘normal teacher’ helping a student.”

Ramos then began confiding in him, complaining about her “man” or “guy” … presumably the teen she had a sexual relationship with.

“Witness 1” told the cops that he saw Ramos and the teen “make eyes at each other” and flirt with one another, court documents alleged.

Ramos would also complain to the student witness that her “man” wouldn’t want to “have sex or do anything,” he later told the school.

She also “tried to have him buy weed for her” apparently.

Police took screenshots of Ramos’ text to the student witness before confronting the former teacher, who denied having sex with the teen.

Ramos, however, did admit to a “close” relationship.

News 12 Connecticut reports that they were so close that Ramos was bringing homemade sandwiches and fruit in for her alleged victim.

In a second interview, Ramos admitted she had sex with the teen “a handful of times” in her car, starting in December and ending in April.

She said that she had previously talked to the teenager in question about denying their relationship and had deleted all of their texts.

A different witness told local authorities, according to News 12, that Ramos had also asked him “to buy, find and roll marijuana” for her.

A former student of Ramos said “I was very, very, very frustrated, very angry, disappointed, upset. This should have been dealt with properly.”

“I feel like this situation was not handled properly at all.” 

Her lawyer, Edward Gavin, said in a statement:

“She is cloaked in the presumption of innocence, and we look forward to obtaining all the investigative reports so that we can offer the appropriate defense.”

Ramos submitted a letter of resignation to the school on June 20. School officials say that termination proceedings have been initiated.

The case is still being investigated by the Bridgeport Police Department, the school district and Central High School’s resource officer.

Otto Warmbier Dies; U.S. Student, Former North Korean Prisoner Was 22

Otto Warmbier, a young American who was famously sentenced to hard labor in North Korea more than a year and a half ago, has died.

He had only just returned to the US, having been in a coma for over a year.

His loved ones mourn him, and his family has issued a public statement:

18 months ago, Otto Warmbier was on vacation in North Korea (by way of a trip to China) when he was accused of attempting to steal a propaganda poster from a restricted area of his hotel.

The “evidence” was sketchy at best.

After issuing a dubious confession, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

He had, you see, by allegedly messing with a poster, committed a “crime against the state.”

The sentence itself, and possibly the initial accusation that led up to it, was a political reprisal for American sanctions against North Korea for their nuclear program.

After spending the majority of that sentence in a coma, it was clear when Otto’s still-medically-considered-alive body returned home days ago that recovery might be impossible.

Today, that became a tragic certainty.

His parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, have issued this statement:

“It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home.  Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20pm.”

Every parent’s nightmare, right?

“t would be easy at a moment like this to focus on all that we lost — future time that won’t be spent with a warm, engaging, brilliant young man whose curiosity and enthusiasm for life knew no bounds.”

Heartbreaking.

“But we choose to focus on the time we were given to be with this remarkable person.”

They thank the doctors who worked to try to restore Otto to his former self.

“We would like to thank the wonderful professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who did everything they could for Otto.

And there’s no question of where the blame lies, in their minds or basically in anyone else’s:

“Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today”

They even describe Otto’s final days.

Brace yourselves.

“When Otto returned to Cincinnati late on June 13th he was unable to speak, unable to see and unable to react to verbal commands.”

Awful.

“He looked very uncomfortable — almost anguished.  Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed — he was at peace.”

That might be their interpretation, but even someone with massive brain injuries might perceive things on some level about the world around them.

“He was home and we believe he could sense that.”

The Warmbiers have described North Korea as a “pariah,” and they’re right.

The rogue state is a dystopian hellhole — the kind where so much Young Adult fiction is set.

And the world does nothing, for a long list of complicated reasons.

How agonizing it must be for the people impacted by it, both North Korean citizens themselves who are powerless against an oppressive regime, and for those outsiders caught up in it all.

We’re glad that Otto had some peace at the end.

And though they’ll be tormented for years, wondering what horrors befell their son to put him in such a condition, we hope that his family finds peace soon.
