90 Day Fiance: Kalani Defends Sister, Father Against Viewer Backlash

Even though Larissa made Colt’s mom cry on this week’s 90 Day Fiance, she’s not the only target for the wrath of viewers.

Kalani’s sister and her father have both been the targets of intense fan criticism over how they treated Asuelu in the episode.

So Kalani took to social media to defend her family. She also took her social media private to block out the haters.

Kalani does not have time for haters who are coming after her family.

On this week’s episode, Asuelu met Kalani’s family and began his uphill battle towards being accepted.

It didn’t help that he took Kalani’s virginity and impregnated her while she was on vacation.

(That’s not a way to start things off on the right foot with someone’s deeply Mormon family, folks)

But Kalani’s sister also resented his sudden intrusion into the family — and the fact that he had cheated on Kalani.

Kalani’s dad had … other, more complicated concerns.

First, Kalani defended her sister, Kolini, after fans gave her a hard time for resenting baby Oliver’s dad.

“My sister WAS Oliver’s dad for his first five months,” Kalani writes on Instagram.

“She watched him when I had to go back to work for Asuelu’s papers,” she says.

“She bought all of the s–t I didn’t get from my baby shower,” she adds.

Kalani continues: “and let me skip rent/bills when I had to buy his plane tickets for his interviews and doctor’s appointments.”

That is one hell of a supportive sister — and a supportive aunt.

Kalani makes it clear that Asuelu deserved some of her sister’s ire.

“Asuelu wasn’t paid in coconuts, dumbasses,” Kalani says of her baby daddy’s job.

“He made $ 600 American a month,” she shares. “With no bills.”

“As a sister, if you know you’re throwing downtime and money to help your nephew,” she says.

Kalani continues: “and know that the father isn’t helping in ways that he could — YOU’D BE SALTY TOO!”

Yep.

As we mentioned, things were a little more complicated for Kalani’s father.

Her dad didn’t want her to be with a Samoan man, which sounds racist until you remember that he himself is Samoan.

“You know how I feel about you being with my kind of people,” he told her on 90 Day Fiance.

“It’s just the way I was born and raised,” he said. “It’s a fast life here and it’s a slow life there.”

That sounds like internalized racism — when people absorb prejudices about themselves — and fans were upset.

Kalani says that some of her statements about her dad wanting her to be with “white men” were taken out of context.

(We absolutely had to include this — both Asuelu and baby Oliver’s first Halloween!)

90 Day Fiance is absolutely no stranger to scenes in which things were taken out of context.

We don’t think that Kalani thinks that white men offer more stability than Samoan men.

We hope that her father doesn’t really feel that way.

It is totally understandable that Kalani opted to make her Instagram private after dealing with all of that backlash following this week’s episode.

We all might wish that her family had been a little more open to Asuelu, but that doesn’t make them monsters.

Audrey Roloff Faces Backlash for "Inappropriate" Beach Photos of Baby Daughter

Audrey Roloff is not known for stirring up controversy.

Yes, early in her reality show career, the Little People, Big World star received some flak about posing naked in a bathtub, mostly because she has built a reputation as being a rather staunch Christian.

This incident took place in August of 2016.

Since then, Audrey has mostly just used her Instagram page as a way to gush about three things:

  1. Her faith.

  2. Her husband.

  3. And, now that she’s been a mother for about eight months, her daughter Ember Jean.

When Audrey does create outrage online, it’s typically due to something she said regarding these loved ones or her religion.

For example, Roloff (deservedly perhaps?) heard it from many followers a few days ago after an episode of Little People, Big World aired in which she labeled baby formula as “sinful.”

We can understand why lots of people did not react favorably to that terminology.

But we most definitely cannot fathom why so many trolls out there are dragging Audrey all over the place for her latest set of social media photos.

One is posted above and the other below.

They were snapped of the relatively new mother during a recent trip to Hawaii… and they’re adorable, right?!?

They feature Audrey and Ember at total peace and contentment on the beach.

At least that’s how we interpreted the images.

However, others on the Internet have sadly focused on Ember’s lack of clothing and actually given Audrey a hard time for sharing pictures of her naked child online.

“WTH, Auds, put a bathing suit on her!” one disgusted Internet user wrote in reply to this image, while another labeled it as “inappropriate” and still another went as far as to call it “pornographic.”

That’s just crazy talk, in our opinion, and it says a lot more about the person writing it than about Audrey herself.

But one comment did hit home a little more accurately.

One person noted that the pictures are harmless and cute, but that there are “pervs” on the Web that may look at them the “wrong way,” encouraging Audrey to be aware of such gross individuals when posting such snapshots.

We can sadly see that.

Roloff, to her credit, is not letting the misguided haters get her down.

She shared a lengthy caption with these pictures that summed up her take on motherhood so far.

“This was an evening of undistracted playfulness with our little girl. Splashing in the ocean and digging in the sand,” opened Audrey, adding:

“I think it was C.S. Lewis that said, ‘Children aren’t a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.’

“I’ll admit it. I’m a heroic multitasker. And although this might be a skill worthy of praise in our culture, it’s a tendency I’m trying to fight against. I want to be more present, more tuned-in, and more alive in each moment, task, or encounter.

“Especially when it comes to motherhood.”

She concluded:

I don’t want to model busyness, I want my life to reflect discipline, priorities, and healthy rhythms of rest. I want my daughter to know by my actions that raising her is a privellage and a blessing, not a burden.

Moms how do you fight agaisnt the temptaion to multitask?!

This isn’t the first time Audrey has reached out to her fellow moms.

Do you gave a response to her question here, ladies?

Luann de Lesseps Defends Herself Against Blackface Backlash

Luann de Lesseps has walked smack dab into yet another scandal.

But we guess the reality star should be grateful that she didn’t stumble into it drunkenly.

About three months after de Lesseps got arrested in Florida for some very wasted behavior, the veteran Bravo personality has once again found herself the subject of backlash.

On Wednesday night’s Real Housewives of New York City premiere, Luann attended a Halloween party dressed like legendary singer Diana Ross.

(Yes, the episode was filmed way back in October.)

It was a unique costume, that’s for sure, but it didn’t take long for folks on the Internet to find a pretty big problem with it:

de Lesseps is white. Ross is black.

The former rocked a revealing dress and a giant afro wig for the occasion, and also clearly darkened her skin in some way.

And it was this latter move that has sparked an outcry of “BLACKFACE!” from many viewers and social media users.

(Blackface was a popular form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers in the 19th century and early 20th century; it contributed, both then and now, to the spread of various racial stereotypes.)

Aware of the chatter surrounding her ensemble, Luann explained to Entertainment Tonight that she didn’t actually paint her face black.

“I had makeup on, but not anything that would make me look — I had like, tanning cream on,” she told Nischelle Turner, adding that she doesn’t agree with the criticism that has come her way as a result of the costume.

However, “I get it,” she notes.

de Lesseps first heard from critics of this look back in November when she shared the above photo on Instagram.

But the issue has now come back up due to the aforementioned Season 10 premiere.

Appearing after the episode aired on Watch What Happens Live, Luann said she “horrified,” by the negative reaction, adding:

“I never meant to hurt anybody’s feelings. I love Diana Ross and I totally respect Diana Ross. It was really kind of a tribute to her, and it was Halloween.”

At some point, perhaps, celebrity will realize that dressing up as other celebrities isn’t really a tribute of any kind.

Kourtney Kardashian learned this lesson the hard way back when she dressed up like Michael Jackson for Halloween.

“I had bronzer on that I wear normally like the rest of my skin. I’m tan, like right now,” de Lesseps also told Andy Cohen on air, prior to apologizing for real:

“I didn’t add anything to or would ever, ever, ever dream of doing a blackface, ever. I’m very sorry to everyone out there if I offended anyone.”

And just to drive her point home, Luanna added the following on Twitter:

“I would like to clear the air, I love and respect Diana Ross, this was my tribute to her I was showing my sincere admiration.

“I in no way altered my skin color and I did not mean to offend anyone.”

We believe her.

We aren’t all that mad anymore.

But it’s a pretty simple lesson for all to heed in the end:

If you are white, do not dress up for Halloween like a black person. Case closed. It isn’t that complicated.

Kim Kardashian Hit with Backlash for Cultural Appropriation Pic

Once again, Kim Kardashian is accused of cultural appropriation. After her Bo Derek dreadlocks and her Aaliyah costume, some fans are concerned that she still hasn’t learned her lesson.

This time, she isn’t accused of stealing culture from black people and claiming it as her own.

No — her latest photo and caption are seeing her accused of appropriating and fetishizing Japanese culture.

Cultural appropriation might not carry the obvious hateful intent of, say, blackface or a physical attack against a minority, but appropriation is part of the complex social forces that keep minorities marginalized.

But … is Kim’s photo in which she poses with a geisha an example of appropriation … or is it just appreciation?

Take a look at this picture and decide for yourself.

Kim decided to share a snap from her recent trip to Japan. Fans can clearly see that Kim is pushing out her lips for the camera while seeming to apply makeup to a geisha’s cheek.

Kim Kardashian captioned this photo: “A dream come true.”

While not all responses were negative, some immediate comments accused Kim of cultural appropriation.

“HOW ARE U SO PROBLEMATIC?”

That all-caps comment shows how frustrated some fans can be when their favorite celebrities say or do things that disappoint them.

(It’s worth noting that Kim’s fans find what they see as racial insensitivity particularly troubling, because Kim’s three children are black)

Some, at least, made jokes about it.

“Kim posing with the next culture she’s about to appropriate. [Just kidding], love you Kim.”

Other fans rose to Kim’s defense.

“Lmao people saying cultural appropriation. Get educated. Kim you’re doing great sweetie.”

And it never hurts to ask questions, as one fan did, wanting to see if Kim was crossing any boundaries.

“Is this cultural appropriation? Actual question. Is she wrong for this? I feel like she might be but I’m not sure bc it’s not my culture. Any ideas?”

It was another fan who offered an answer with a very nuanced reply.

“Not really. What culture is she appropriating? None … stop lighting fires. People are allowed to protect their cultures from appropriation too [by the way] without an eye roll.”

It’s important to note that Japan’s relationship with the West is not the same as that which black people have endured.

For example, while a white American wearing culturally sensitive clothing of a Native American (such as a war bonnet) would be pretty horrifying, Japan as a rule has no issue with outsiders wearing, say, a kimono.

In the 16th Century, Japanese imperial regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi cracked down on European influences, both cultural and political, having seen what the Spanish had done in the Philippines and not wanting to see that repeated in Japan.

As a result, Japan has only very recently begun to see their culture emulated and fetishized by others on any broad scale, and they tend to view that differently because they did not endure centuries of enslavement by European or American powers.

At the same time, Americans of Japanese decent are a minority group and often view white peers claiming Japanese culture in a very different light. Especially when they face racism for being perceived to “act Asian” (or not “act Asian”).

So, like everything regarding the social construct that is race, this is a complicated topic.

I’m by no means Japanese and would never claim to have the authority to decide whether or not this is appropriation.

But both my initial reaction and my conclusion after a lot of careful thought is that Kim is just practicing cultural appreciation.

If Kim starts up obnoxious antics that reduces Japan to a stereotype in the douchiest way possible, like in this photo of Logan Paul in Japan, that would be a very different matter.

The photo just shows Kim consensually applying makeup to a geisha’s face. She’s not pretending to be one on a magazine cover or claiming geishas as part of her brand.

This looks like appreciation. Just because Kim can be problematic at times doesn’t mean that there aren’t false alarms.

Kate Middleton Defies Dress Code, Actually Garners Backlash

It has happened, folks.

It has finally happened.

The celebrity most impervious to criticism is actually on the receiving end of a few harsh rebukes…

… and it’s all due to the color of a dress Kate Middleton chose to wear in public over the weekend.

On Sunday night, Middleton and husband Prince William attended the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), which are the British equivalent of the Academy Awards.

As always, the eyes of a nation turned to Middleton not only because she’s beautiful and fashionable and beloved – but also because she’s seven months pregnant.

What sort of outfit would she wear? Would her baby bump be visible?

The brunette bombshell chose a deep green cap-sleeved gown by Jenny Packham, and she looks gorgeous in the dress.

No one on social media dared to debate this point, as Kate also accessorized with emerald jewelry, suede Prada heels and a black clutch.

But nearly everyone else at the event went with black tuxedos or gowns.

You see, just like the Golden Globes in January, attendees of this year’s BAFTAs were strongly encouraged to wear this color in support of the Time’s Up initiative, which stands against harassment, assault and mistreatment of women.

Specifically, the organization is a legal defense fund meant to provide monetary support to those who wish to take legal action.

It was started after the #MeToo movement swept Hollywood, exposing sexual predators such as Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer.

Even though the Royal Family famously stays away from hot-button political issues, many fans assumed Middleton would at least show support for this cause, simply considering how non-controversial it is.

Or how non-controversial it should be, at least.

As a result of Middleton’s decision to don green, therefore, these folks felt let down by their duchess.

“Disappointed in #KateMiddleton #DuchessofCambridge not wearing black to the #EEBAFTAs It’s not a political thing. It’s a woman thing!” wrote one disgruntled Internet user.

Added another:

“I know the Royals aren’t supposed to get involved with “protests” or anything… but would it really have been THAT bad for Kate Middleton to wear black??? #BAFTAs2018.”

angry at kate

Middleton, of course, has a lot going on these days.

She’s due to give birth in just a few weeks, possibly to a PAIR OF BABIES.

It’s conceivable, albeit unlikely, that she was unaware that stars had been asked to wear black in honor of this initiative.

Without citing any specific cause, she has spoken up in the past about motherhood and feminism.

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience,” she said in a speech last year, adding at the time:

“However, at times it has also been a huge challenge. Even for me who has support at home that most mothers do not.

“It’s full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together.”

The crux of this speech wasn’t really political, but it did tackle the subject of mental health, proving that Middleton isn’t afraid to at least touch on topics that mean a lot to her.

“It is right to talk about motherhood as a wonderful thing,” she said.

“But we also need to talk about its stresses and strains. It’s okay not to find it easy, and asking for help should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

“If any of us caught a fever during pregnancy, we would seek advice and support from a doctor. Getting help with our mental health is no different.”

These words were met with strong virtual applause across the Internet.

Many just wish Kate, when faced with the opportunity, had said something similar about the ongoing female empowerment movement taking over the film industry as well.

Jade Roper Responds to Breastfeeding Photo Backlash

Fun fact: not all Bachelor in Paradise romances lead to disaster. Every now and then, a couple emerges and they stay together. In fact, Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert got engaged, got married, and then Jade and Tanner welcomed their first child!

Jade Roper recently shared a precious breastfeeding photo and got slammed for it.

Now that the dust has settled, she’s speaking out.

it started with this photo and the accompanying caption:

“Mommy PSA! Nursing Emmy has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life (I adore these after feeding snuggles, too).”

It’s not just a source of nutrition — it can be an incredible period of bonding.

“It’s so incredible how our bodies transform during and post-pregnancy. But all nursing mommies out there know how difficult finding a good, functional nursing bra can be!”

Well, here comes the product placement.

“@thirdlove has created a comfortable, practical and beautiful nursing bra that FITS! You go on their site and take a quick fit finder quiz and they ship the bras straight to your door.”

But at least she offers a promo code.

“Even better they offer a 100% fit guarantee! They have a wide range of styles and sizes for every woman. (I also got a beautiful lace bra). Use my code JADE15 for 15% off your first order! #mythirdlove”

As precious as the picture, snapped right after she was breastfeeding her adorable baby, was … she got some backlash, and took to her Instagram story to address it.

“So, I had some comments about the picture I posted of me and Emerson after I was breastfeeding and people telling me they don’t look like that when they breastfeed and that I was setting up a standard that’s impossible to live up to.”

She did look super nice in that photo.

“The truth about that picture is I had a photo shoot the day before and I hadn’t taken my makeup off, so that’s literally the day before’s makeup.”

She shouldn’t have to explain why she had the gall to look nice in a photo … but that definitely explains it.

“And it was slightly staged — we positioned Emerson just right to make the picture [work], but that was literally right after I had fed her and she had fallen asleep on me and we do have those moments where we snuggle so I don’t get what’s so unreal about it.”

Any photo that isn’t a candid is slightly staged.

She clarifies that her real life is a good deal messier.

“People were telling me I shouldn’t cover up. I was actually getting flack for putting a cover over my baby which I just don’t understand why that would be something people would give me s–t about.”

You can cover up your boob or you can leave it exposed, folks. That’s your right as a human being. One person’s campaign to go topless should not be read as a mandate for another to cover up.

“And my baby is feeding right now and I’m still going to cover up because that’s what I feel the most comfortable with. I feel like I don’t need to share all of that with the world, that’s not the message. It’s just that women should be able to do what they feel like they need to do for their babies.”

Exactly! She can cover up or not. Again, her choice.

“And my baby is feeding right now and I’m still going to cover up because that’s what I feel the most comfortable with. I feel like I don’t need to share all of that with the world, that’s not the message. It’s just that women should be able to do what they feel like they need to do for their babies.”

It turns out that her reply to the backlash was well-received, because she posted again — with this throwback pic.

“You guuuuys, thank you so much for all the support I’ve received about my Instagram stories earlier. It truly, truly means so much to me and I tried to read every kind and empowering message from each of you.”

“I was very emotional earlier. and I think it’s because my nursing relationship with Emmy is one of my most favorite mommy experiences (even though it’s had its ups and downs, because it’s an ever changing experience).”

“Thank you for letting me be myself and express how much I love being a mom and thank you for letting me express myself when I feel like I’m failing as a mom (or failing others) or I feel unsure of myself.”

She finishes that photo’s caption with:

“All the moms out there that support each other, you’re the best. *This is my favorite post-feeding picture of Emmy and me, I can’t believe she used to be this little."”

It’s a shame that she got backlash for looking her best for a photo. Famous people don’t owe you the nitty gritty messiness of human existence.

It’s also a shame that people give her a hard time for covering up. That is every bit as bad as giving a woman a hard time for not covering up. What’s liberating for one woman can be horrifying for another.

If she had to get criticized for something, you’d think that it would have been for posting what looked like a sponsored post without following FTC guidelines on the #ad hashtag.

Amy Roloff Throwback Photo Prompts Matt Roloff Backlash... For Some Reason

Amy Roloff has shared a new/very old and cute photo of her and her twin boys.

And it has resulted in some major Matt Roloff backlash for no discernible reason whatsoever.

Allow us to explain…

On Wednesday, Amy shared a totally adorable and sort of shocking throwback picture of herself and her twins, Zach and Jeremy.

(Yep, their twins, even though the former was born with dwarfism – just like his parents – and the latter was not. Interesting, huh?)

In the sweet image, it appears as if Amy just got at least one of her sons out of the bath and is drying him off… while the other is on the floor, attempting to crawl.

It was obviously snapped decades ago.

“Yep! All my kids are my life then as they are now,” wrote the Little People, Big World matriarch at a caption, adding:

“These twin boys were a hoot and now look at them. Jeremy and Zachary I’m so proud of you and love you forever and always.”

Take a look at the sentimental snapshot here:

Some Instagram users took a look at this image and simply commented on how it’s very precious and pretty hilarious.

“One helluva mommy Amy it had to have been a challenge to take care of 4 children, love you,” wrote someone named Betty Tucker, for instance.

A few others, however, used this photo as a reason to GO OFF on Matt Roloff. For some strange reason.

Just consider this response:

hating on mattr

And this one:

matt sux

Why is Matt Roloff a “bad person” simply because Amy gave us a glimpse at her life as a mother many, many years ago?

We have absolutely no idea.

The prevailing notion, as best as we can guess, is that TLC viewers are angry about Matt’s divorce from Amy, even though it seemed perfectly amicable at the time.

They finalized their legal split in May of 2016, several months after making a joint announcement that reads as follows:

After 27 years of marriage, it is with great sadness that we have come to the difficult decision to file for divorce.

We are proud of what we have accomplished together, including raising four wonderful children who have grown to become remarkable adults and building our strong and ongoing successful business.

Neither reality star asked for spousal support and both continue to be main cast members in Little People, Big World.

It truly seems like an amicable break-up.

HOWEVER, Matt has been dating Caryn Chandler for over a year now – and she formerly worked as a manager at the family farm.

Amy supporters are therefore bitter and angry that Matt would begin a romance with someone who knows Amy fairly well.

And it’s true that this appears to have created a bit of tension between the former spouses, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

Heck, Amy herself is in a very serious relationship with Chris Marek (below); she certainly isn’t missing Matt at all these days.

She’s never said a bad word about Matt in public and vice versa.

Might this be an imaginary feud?

Might some fans be a little too invested in a romance that fell apart years ago?

Might it actually be a tad bit sexist to slam Matt in the ways some people did above, the implication being that Amy is some poor, weak, scorned woman… as opposed to a perfectly strong and steady individual who has moved on from her marriage and holds no resentment?

Just a few questions to ponder.

We see no reason to stir up any controversy between Amy and Matt when none seems to exist.

Can’t the former just share a sweet throwback photo of her sons without it inciting a Matt-hating riot?

Ciara Responds to Backlash After Telling Women to Get Married!

Even though it hasn’t even been two full years since Ciara and Russell Wilson got married, Ciara apparently feels like she’s in a place to give some very heavy-handed marriage advice.

After Ciara shared some “advice” that didn’t go over very well with fans, she received quite a bit of backlash. Some believed that she was shaming women for not being married.

Now, Ciara is speaking out. But we’re not sure if this is going to smooth out those ruffled feathers.

Ciara seems to be one of those people who thinks that there’s one right way to do things — and it’s whatever way she happens to do them.

And she’s also apparently one of those people who thinks that she can just stand above everyone else and give out advice.

On Instagram, Ciara shared a video of a sermon with the quote:

“Too many women want to be married, but you’re walking in the spirit of ‘girlfriend,"” a quote by the pastor who is speaking in the video, John Gray.

Ciara then added to it: “#LevelUp. Don’t settle.”

As you can imagine, this didn’t exactly go over well with a lot of fans. Nobody follows singers to get preached to.

“Ciara’s playing a dangerous game. You should never, no matter how perfect your relationship/marriage appears to be, sit on a throne and tell people why they’re not romantically successful. You can be the queen of the ball today and have cake in your face tomorrow!”

Others took issue with the pastor’s line, and the distinction that he gives between wives and girlfriends, saying:

“The difference between the two is a ring and a piece of paper…this speech is a hot piece of garbage.”

Others brought up Ciara’s past. People who formerly lived in glass houses still shouldn’t throw rocks.

“Ciara telling women to ‘Level up’ and live ‘like a wife’ so they can b married is astounding to me. Didn’t you need grace, mercy, & compassion when you were being dragged up and down the Internet for the Future situation? How quickly ppl forget when they reach a perch of privilege.”

Some, however, defended Ciara, saying that fans were hypocritical and just rejecting the advice because it wasn’t what they wanted to hear.

“Y’all wanted to know how Ciara snatched a Russell Wilson, and she told y’all but now y’all mad. LMAO.”

Others lashed out at how people had brought up Ciara’s past.

“Ciara’s GROWTH has nothing to do with her denying her past …. Y’all heffas get mad at fellow women for trying to encourage you to do BETTER because you deserve better but you’re also upset when men degrade you. Y’all Just gotta play victim because Hoe is Life.”

We think that the issue is that “girlfriend” isn’t worse than “wife,” it’s just different. A lot of her fans felt like they were being shamed.

Ciara responded with an Instagram post that … well, it’s probably not going to endear her to the people who didn’t like her previous post.

“I was [once] that girl wanting to be loved a certain way bit was making the wrong choices. I found myself at my lowest moment.”

That sounds so sad.

“I was a single mom sitting at home, and then I realized that the perfect love I was looking for was how God loves me, how He wants me to be loved, and who He was calling me to be as a mom and a woman.”

A lot of folks are going to object to her describing single motherhood as her “lowest moment.”

“That’s when I realized married [or] not married… I needed to love myself. #LevelUp”

Self-love is a valuable thing to learn. Not everyone wants to get married now or to get married ever, but everyone wants to love themselves.
