Verne Troyer Dies; Beloved Austin Powers Actor Was 49

Sad news out of Hollywood today, as multiple media outlets have now confirmed that actor Verne Troyer has passed away.

He was just 49 years old.

Troyer’s cause of his death is unknown at this time.

Best known for his role as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers series of films, Troyer suffered a number of personal setbacks in the wake of his meteoric rise to fame.

Earlier this month, Troyer was hospitalized after police were told that he was drunk and exhibiting suicidal behavior.

Doctors reportedly treated him for alcohol poisoning upon his arrival.

There’s no word yet on whether Troyer’s death was in any way tied to his most recent struggles.

Beginning his career as a stunt double in the 1994 film Baby’s Day Out, Troyer eventually amassed almost 60 film and television credits over the course of his decades in Hollywood.

But it was his role in 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged for which the actor will best be remembered.

Hamming it up as a diminutive clone of Mike Meyers’ Dr. Evil, Troyer became a fan favorite and an overnight sensation.

Troyer went on to work with Meyers on two additional films, including Austin Powers in Goldmember, and he even made a brief cameo in the first Harry Potter film.

Sadly, the 2000s saw a steep decline in both the actor’s career and personal life.

He continued to find work in Hollywood, but now it was mostly bit parts in small-budget comedies and degrading appearances on reality TV shows.

In 2015, Troyer married actress Brittney Powell, with whom he appeared on an episode of ABC’s Celebrity Wife Swap.

Troyer also appeared on such short-lived reality shows as Celebrity Juice and The Surreal Life.

Born with a condition known as achondroplasia dwarfism, Troyer says he was never treated differently as a child, but later revealed that his condition had often made his adult life tremendously difficult.

He is survived by Powell and a stepson named Tyson.

Our thoughts go out to Troyer’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Bryce Powers: The Bachelorette Contestant Under Fire For Transphobic Joke

The Bachelorette is still 12 hours away from its season premiere and contestant Bryce Powers is already stirring up controversy.

You don’t need to read The Bachelorette spoilers to know why, either. Just Powers’ own words, via a Q&A session on ABC’s bio.

Bryce (pictured above), is being slammed online over a negative comment he made about transgender people on the show’s website.

The network’s site devoted to The Bachelorette features Q&As with the 31 men who will be competing to win Rachel Lindsay’s love.

For that feature, Powers, a 30-year-old Florida firefighter, was asked the time-honored question, “What’s your biggest dating fear?”

His response? “The chick is actually a dude.”

Most likely nothing more than an attempt to be funny with a throwaway answer to a throwaway question he thought about for half a second?

That’s what we’re assuming. But many Bachelorette fans on Twitter were not having it once this response started to circulate online.

Bryce Tweets

Sharon Needles, who fans of reality TV may remember as the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season four, tweeted in response

“Bryce from the Bachelorette’s biggest fear is trans women who are attempting to conceal their birth sex. I see why yer single, douche bag.”

Other transgender individuals were equally harsh on him. One took him to task for the comment with some pretty impressive shade.

“Dear Bryce, on behalf of trans women I can assure you: none of us what to date your bland preppy 1980s teen movie villain rhombus ass. xo”

ABC later removed the question and answer the bio.

“This comment does not reflect the views of ABC, Warner Horizon or [The Bachelorette star] Rachel Lindsay,” a studio rep said in a statement.

“We have removed it from ABC (dot) com.”

Pretty tone deaf of Bryce to say that, and perhaps more so of ABC to post his answer, even if there’s no negative intent there.

Powers has not commented directly on the controversy as of press time, and The Bachelorette Season 13 premieres tonight.

Perhaps, with talk of Bachelorette spoilers and other absurd antics playing out on TV in just a short while, this will blow over.

It appears that Season 13 will end in a proposal.

Rachel Lindsay is engaged, she confirmed last week during a conference call in advance of her debut in the starring role this week.

“I am getting my happy ending!” she said.

Will Bryce be one of the contenders, or will his time on ABC be as short-lived as that answer? See who he’s up against below!

Powers Boothe Dies; Veteran Actor Was 68 Years Old

Powers Boothe, a veteran actor of both the big screen and the small screen, died on Sunday in his sleep.

He was 68 years old.

According to publicist Karen Samfilippo, Boothe passed away inside his Los Angeles home from natural causes.

A private service will be held for him this week in his native state of Texas, while his family is contemplating a more public memorial at some point in the future.

Beau Bridges, another long-time star in the industry, Tweeted confirmation of the sad news on Sunday afternoon, writing the following message:

Boothe was mostly known for portraying fictional villains, from saloon owner Cy Tolliver on HBO’s Deadwood to one of his more recent appearances on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

He grew up on a Texas farm and began his acting career on stage, starring in a number of Shakespearean productions, including Henry IV.

After becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college, he made his Broadway debut in the 1970s in Lone Star & Pvt. Wars.

In 1980, Boothe won an Emmy Award for lead actor in a limited series or special for playing cult leader Jim Jones in CBS’ Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.

He took home that trophy during an actors strike and decided to cross the picket line to accept it, saying at the time:

“This may be either the bravest moment of my career or the dumbest.”

Boothe also was nominated two ensemble SAG Awards, first in 1996 alongside the cast of Nixon and then again in 2007 with the cast of Deadwood.

He’s probably best known to current movie goers for having players Senator Roark in the Sin City franchise.

Also in the film universe, he portrayed Alexander Haig in Nixon (1995)… a sheriff in another Oliver Stone movie, U Turn (1997)… and was unforgettable as the evil gunman Curly Bill Brocius in Tombstone (1993).

Boothe played Connie Britton’s father on Nashville and the President of the United States on a season of 24.

“I loved acting with you #PowersBoothe you were a gentlemen and a great actor,” wrote Lea Thompson in response to Boothe’s passing.

His Deadwood co-star, Garret Dillahunt, described the star on Facebook as “a formidable adversary, baseball lover and poser hater,” adding as a tribute:

“Give em hell Powers.”

In 2009, Boothe was inducted in the Texas Film Hall of Fame, along with actor and singer Billy Bob Thornton.

Those who wish to honor the late star can send donations to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which assists the country’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need.

May Powers Boothe rest in peace.
