Ashley Sawyer: Catfish Star"s Possible Cause of Death Revealed

Last night, the world was shocked to learn of the death of Ashley Sawyer, the star of one of the more memorable episodes of MTV’s Catfish.

The news was confirmed to the public in a social media post from the network:

“MTV is deeply saddened to learn that Ashley Sawyer has passed away,” the statement read.

“Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”

No cause of death was given at the time, but now Radar Online is reporting that Sawyer’s passing appears to have been drug related.

According to a statement from the Hoover (Alabama) Police Department’s public information officer, Chuck McDonald, EMTs responded to a 911 call just after midnight on Monday to find Sawyer unconscious in her apartment.

“Arriving officers found a white female unconscious with bystanders/witnesses performing CPR,” McDonald revealed.

“Officers attempted to revive the female with the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), to no avail.”

McDonald didn’t speculate on the cause, but an autopsy report indicates that Sawyer’s death “may be related to a drug overdose, possibly heroin.”

Police sources confirm that Sawyer received a dose of Narcan, which is typically administered only in cases of narcotic overdose.

The 23-year-old was reportedly pronounced dead on the scene.

Sawyer’s episode is remembered by Catfish fans for the revelation that she and online friend Michael Fortunato were both “catfishing” one another by misrepresenting their identities online.

Tragically, Fortunato died of a pulmonary embolism at the age of 26 just one month after the episode aired.

Sawyer appeared on a recent catch-up episode and revealed that she had been staying in a sober-living facility after struggling with substance abuse for several years.

“Shocked and saddened by the death of Ashley Sawyer,” Catfish co-host Max Joseph tweeted yesterday,

“So sweet and kind. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”

Ashley Sawyer Dies; Former Catfish Star Was 23

Shocking and sad news today out of the world of MTV and reality television:

Ashley Sawyer, a subject on the series Catfish who became a viewer favorite after her episode aired in 2013, died in Alabama over last weekend.

She was only 23 years old.

No cause of death has been revealed or determined.

“MTV is deeply saddened to learn that Ashley Sawyer has passed away,” the cable network said in a statement.

“Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”

Sawyer stood out back in Season 2 because both she and her online crush, Michael Fortunato, admitted at the time that they had been catfishing each other.

That is, each had been sending the other false images that purported to be of themselves.

Still, at the conclusion of the installment, both also admitted they still felt a  romantic connection.

Sawyer, a native of Georgia, told viewers that she  was planning to visit Fortunato in New Jersey a second time.

One month after the episode first aired, Fortunato died of a pulmonary embolism at age 26.

In a recent catch-up special of the docuseries, Sawyer explained that she was staying in a sober-living facility after struggling with substance abuse.

According to MTV, she had since completed the program… gotten a job… and started living in her own apartment in Alabama.

Sawyer’s sister, meanwhile, confirmed to MTV that she had finished a treatment program and was living alone at the time of her passing.

Catfish host Max Joseph Tweeted his sadness at Ashley’s passing on Monday night.

“Shocked and saddened by the death of Ashley Sawyer,” he wrote. “So sweet and kind.”

We join Joseph in sending our condolences to Sawyer’s friends, family members and loved ones.

She joins a long list of famous faces we have already lost this year. May she – and they – rest in peace.

Caitlyn Jenner to Catch Back Up with Diane Sawyer

Caitlyn Jenner and Diane Sawyer are getting ready to run it back.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former Olympian and the veteran journalist will sit down for another one-on-one interview in 2016.

The transgender reality star made her debut as Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair this past spring, but she first sat down with Sawyer on April 24 and explained how she has identified herself as female for nearly as long as she can recall.

“For all intents and purposes, I am a woman,” Jenner said during their exchange, adding at the time:

“I am going to change the world. My whole life has been getting me ready for this…

“If this is my only problem I have in life, I’ve got it made. If it’s only this, I’ll be okay. I’ve got my health, I’ve got my children, I’ve got family, I’ve got seven grandkids now. I’m actually really excited about the future and what I can do.”

And what has Caitlyn done since this interview?

She’s gone on to give an inspirational speech at the ESPY Awards, while also starring in a docuseries on E! titled I Am Cait.

She’s continued to talk about LGBT rights and been honored as one of Time Magazine’s most important people of the year.

She’s served as a role model to many in the transgender community, though she recently apologized after a controversial comment made it sound as if Caitlyn were too into her appearance.

Still, what a year it has been for Caitlyn Jenner, huh? Could anyone have predicted this would actually happen?

ABC is yet to announced an air date for her Q&A with Sawyer.
