Vicky Cornell Speaks on Husband"s Suicide: "I Lost My Soulmate"

As we near the one-year anniversary of Chris Cornell"s suicide, the widow of this late musician has spoken out on camera for the first time since this tragedy took place.

In a sit-down with Robin Roberts for Good Morning America, Vicky Cornell opens up about the Soundgarden singer as a husband and a father, while also touching on his drug addiction.

"I know that people say, you know, you can"t blame yourself. And I"m trying not to, but there were signs," Vicky says through tears in the video below.

In the past, Vicky said her husband was not noticeably depressed at the time he took his own life.

But that doesn"t mean she isn"t aware that drug addiction is an illness with no permanent cure.

"People think that addiction is like, "Oh, you were an addict," and people don"t recognize it as a disease," Vicky explains to GMA, adding:

"I was, I feel, guilty of the same thing. You think addiction is a choice, and it"s not."

The late rock star and Vicky got married in 2004.

They share two kids (13-year-old daughter Toni and 12-year-old son Christopher), while Cornell also has a 17-year-old daughter, Lillian, from his previous marriage to Susan Silver.

Cornell was always candid about his substance abuse issues.

But Vicky wants to make it known that this doesn"t mean the artist wasn"t always there for his loved ones.

"My husband was the furthest thing from a rock star junkie. He just wasn"t," she says here.

"He was the best husband, the greatest father. I lost my soul mate and the love of my life."

According to a statement Vicky released to Entertainment Tonight following Cornell"s passing, her husband called her the evening he died and told her he "may have taken an extra Ativan or two."

Cornell had a prescription at the time for this anxiety medication.

He was staying last May at the MGM Grand in Detroit, which is where his body was eventually discovered.

And Vicky is convinced the drug in Chris" system played a key role in his suicide.

"He wanted to be there for his family, for his children. He loved his life. He would never have ever left this world," Vicky told Roberts, adding:

"I don"t think that he could make any decisions because of the level of impairment."

Jay Z: I Cheated on Beyonce, But She"s My Soulmate!

Remember that wacky time when we first started figuring out that Jay Z had cheated on Beyonce?

It was all the way back when she released Lemonade — almost two years ago now, can you beieve it?! — and her message wasn"t exactly subtle.

And then last summer, when he released his new album, he confirmed it with lines like "You almost went Eric Benét, let the baddest girl in the world get away," referencing Halle Berry"s first husband.

In November, Jay talked about it all again in an interview, explaining that he believes he was unfaithful because of his tough childhood.

"You have to survive," he said of the way he grew up. "So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens?"

"You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can"t connect."

"In my case, like, it"s deep," he admitted. "And then all the things happen from there: infidelity."

It makes sense, right?

But last night, Jay appeared on the first episode of Van Jones" new show on CNN, and he discussed everything in even more detail.

When asked why he and Beyonce fought so hard to save their marriage after everything that had happened, he answered "That"s my soulmate. It"s the person I love."

"If you haven"t experienced love or don"t understand it or you don"t have the tools to move forward then you are going to have complications. Period."

He said that "You can either address it or you can pretend until it blows up at some point, and for us, we chose to fight for our love, for our family, to give our kids a different outcome, to break that cycle."

"For black men and women, to see a different outcome … it"s not just a celebrity couple. We were never a celebrity couple, we were a couple who just happened to be celebrities. We"re real people."

Next, Jay Z was asked about any advice he might give to someone in a similar position, and he simply said that "The best apology is changed behavior."

"You have to acknowledge the pain and you have to let that person have their say."

"You have to get on the floor, get on the mattress," he continued. "You have to work through it, really be honest."

"It takes a while. It"s hard. It"s difficult to hear, difficult to stay, difficult to listen to that kind of pain — but you have to be strong enough."

"But on the other side," he added, "it"s beautiful."

For what it"s worth, Jay Z and Beyonce certainly seemed to have been able to work through all their problems — those precious little baby twins they had last year are proof of that.

Unfortunately, Jenelle broke up with Kieffer in 2011. But then she got back together with him a couple of days later! But then they broke up again. This cycle went on for a while until …

4. Gary Head

Jenelle got with Gary Head in 2012. At first he seemed like a good guy — he was a marine, he wasn’t constantly high like Kieffer always seemed to be.

5. Back to Kieffer

After four months with Gary, she dumped him for Kieffer. Hey, the heart wants what it wants, and sometimes it wants your old felon ex, OK?

6. And Back to Gary

After a couple of weeks back with Kieffer, Jenelle went back to Gary, and a couple of weeks after that, they were engaged. A month after that — for real, you can’t make this stuff up — they were both arrested for assaulting each other. And they say romance is dead!
