Counting on Recap: Happy Birthday, Spurge!

Following up on last week’s premiere, Counting On took us back behind the scenes of Duggar family life – and little Spurge’s first birthday!

Meanwhile, Joy-Anna and Austin worked on a house flipping project together, because apparently that’s what they’re doing for work!

As Counting On Season 3 Episode 2 got underway, the focal point was the first birthday for Jessa and Ben Seewald’s first child, Spurgeon.

If you watch Counting On online, you know that marriages, births and courtships are always front and center. Kids’ birthdays, as well.

With Jinger Duggar now living out of state, the co-party planning role fell to Joy-Anna (Jessa was seven months pregnant at the time).

At least Jana Duggar got a break for once?

Eh, not really. We know she’ll be picking up the slack as always. “Joy’s not much of a shopper,” said Jana as Joy navigated the store.

They made sorbet and a smash cake, and set up a bouncy castle against the clock. Even if Spurge didn’t like it, the party was a success.

Jinger Duggar and her new husband Jeremy Vuolo couldn’t attended the party, living many hours away, so they “attended” via FaceTime.

“It’s going to be a challenge to get back for all of the family events because we’re so many hours away,” said Jinger of this new reality.

“It’s so strange to not have her around,” said Jessa.

Fortunately, Jinger and Jeremy were settling into married life in Texas quite well, even if his waistline is not what he’d like it to be lately.

“Me being out of shape is making this look a lot harder than it is,” said the ex-soccer pro after buying five pounds of cheese at the market.

“You look amazing, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Jinger swooned, and then they had all the sex. We’re guessing. Off camera.

At the time this episode was filmed, Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth – who we saw wed on TLC last week – had just begun courting.

Confusing as that is, we got to see them flip houses together. As Joy put it, it’s a good way to see how a partner “works under stress.”

Obviously he passed that particular test.

“It’s been way better than I ever thought,” Austin said, and dude wasn’t talking about home renovations … if you know what we mean!!

Okay, he sorta was. He gushed of Joy:

“I’ve learned you just have to quickly show her how to do something once. And soon enough, she’ll become better at it than you!”

Those Duggars are a resourceful lot!

Fortunately for home refurbishing purposes, and side hug purposes, Austin and Joy had a chaperone on hand in Forsyth’s handy father.

He also told the cameras how he once told young Austin that he had to flip and sell five houses on his own before he could get married.

That’s an extremely random-sounding benchmark, but as Jessa Duggar pointed out … they are working on house number five right now.

“I think he’s really eager to finish this last one,” Mr. Forsyth commented, and we have to think he wasn’t referring to any capital gains.

As for Joy’s take on this endeavor?

“We can distract each other from work when we’re trying to get a project done,” she revealed. “You don’t want it to be ALL work though.”

“You want to have fun too and make memories,” the 19-year-old added, and “I could see us doing this together in the future.”

We think that dream may just become reality. Just a hunch. We just hope Austin lets Joy-Anna wear pants in the process.

Jill & Jessa Counting On Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: Reflections on Spurge, Josh

On Jill & Jessa Counting On Season 2 Episode 7, Jessa, Ben and Spurgeon got ready to visit Jill, Derick and Israel in Central America.

Things didn’t exactly go according to plan, however …

If you watch Jill and Jessa Counting On online, you know that the two titular Duggar sisters have taken a back seat in recent weeks.

With Jana, Jinger and Joy-Anna Duggar taking center stage, TLC has been introducing fans to a whole new crop of Duggar siblings.

This week featured a heavy dose of Jessa and Jill, though, as the girls – both married mothers – looked to reunite after months apart.

“I am so thankful that after a really difficult year, my family is stronger than ever, and going on this trip is a testament to that,” Jessa said.

Ben and Jessa then reflected on the year that was as they packed for the trip, reminiscing about the first kiss they shared – in private.

“We didn’t want to draw everybody’s attention to only the kiss,” Ben said of the decision to save that moment for just the two of them.

“We wanted them to see what the ceremony was all about and pay attention to the message afterwards and not just be analyzing our kiss.”

Jessa’s analysis of it? “Too short, too long, too mushy, not mushy enough.”

Hey, when you don’t kiss until you’re married, you gotta start somewhere.

As for whether her siblings would follow in her footsteps in this regard?

“We’ll have to see what my guy thinks,” Joy-Anna Duggar determined.

John-David, meanwhile, said he’ll “cross that bridge when I get to it.”

Jessa also shared some thoughts on older brother Josh Duggar’s molestation and cheating affected her – especially during her pregnancy:

“It was very difficult, and we cried a lot of tears, and I feel like it was especially difficult for me just because I had spoken out for Josh.”

“I stood up for him, and then there was another whole wave of things [that] were exposed about his personal life, what he was involved in.”

“There were some things that he was hiding and that he wasn’t being honest about,” she said in possibly the understatement of all time.

Jessa noted that while it was stressful, “being pregnant was a breath of fresh air because we had the birth of this child to look forward to.”

Jana Duggar agreed with her younger sibling, reflecting that “even in some of the hardest times in your life, there can still be joy.”

As for how in the heck they settled on the baby name Spurgeon?

We know Dr. Charles Spurgeon was the inspiration, but believe it or not, it was their little one’s middle name that they struggled with.

Of their final choice, Spurgeon Elliot, “I think it’s a really strong name, and looking at him now, I think it fits,” Jana said of her nephew.

“He is the joy of our lives,” Jessa said, adding that taking him to see her big sister Jill in Central America is “just going to be really special.”

After a long flight, Jessa, Ben and Spurgeon were greeted by Derick Dillard at the airport, setting up a huge cliffhanger for next week!!!!

Jill & Jessa Counting On Recap: Welcome, Baby Spurge!

Sunday, Jill & Jessa Counting On Season 1 Episode 3 wrapped up TLC’s trial-balloon revival of select members of the Duggar family.

What did we learn from this behind-the-scenes special? Will it lead to more Jill, Jessa and the rest of the Duggars on the network again?

If you happened to watch Jill & Jessa Counting On online the previous two weeks, you know Josh Duggar loomed large over the production.

The final installment shifted toward a happier event – the birth of Jessa Duggar and husband Ben Seewald’s first child, Spurgeon!

Notably absent, as life would have it, were co-star Jill Duggar and hubby Derick Dillard, who were/are off doing missionary work.

Long before any of her contractions began, Jessa was already talking about the possibility of one day adopting children with Ben.

There’s even been talk of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar adopting a 20th child lately, so the family seems on board with this idea.

For now, they were preparing for their newborn, and Anna Duggar, Jana Duggar and Jinger Duggar all gathered to welcome it.

At Jessa and Ben’s house, which was also the same house that Anna used to live in … with Josh Duggar. You can’t escape that guy.

“It was a lot fun and refreshing,” Anna said, acknowledging that it was a “tender spot to go back and be in what was our starter home.”

She admitted that she had “a lot of sweet memories” there, and “it was good to be back, I guess … and have some time to look back.”

Through tears, she said, “It’s been hard, but I think it’s been a good opportunity to draw close to God and just trusting for his wisdom.”

She did, for what it’s worth, compare her marital woes to a never-ending labor … yet expressed hope that God will heal her marriage.

What the future holds for Anna and Josh, no one can say, but a few days past her due date, Jessa finally began getting contractions.

Jessa’s agony was palpable. So was her husband’s strength.

“Ben was just solid,” Michelle Duggar said of her son-in-law. “He was there and he stuck by her side. It was really sweet.”

For Ben, it was a case of faking it until you make it (a baby).

“As labor was ramping up, she was in pain, so I was feeling the pain too,” he explained of the experience. “It was pretty difficult.”

“I was thinking to myself, ‘Hopefully the baby will come soon so this can be over.’ But [labor] kept dragging on, and dragging on.”

After what seemed like forever (to her, it was), the baby came.

“When I got to the point where my body started pushing, it was really intense,” Jessa said. “But it was also like, ‘OK, this is happening.”

“I’m not going to be pregnant for the rest of my life."”

At 6:24 p.m. Jessa and Ben welcomed a healthy baby boy, which they named Spurgeon … and then were rushed to the hospital.

She lost a lot of blood, and like Jill earlier this year, the sheer size of the youngster contributed to Jessa’s labor complications.

Despite the snag, Jessa was in good spirits … mostly: “The first thing I said to my mom was, ‘I don’t know how you did this 19 times!"”

You’re not alone in that sentiment, Jessa.

25 Most Absurd Celebrity Baby Names: Get in Line, Spurge!

From Apple to North to Spurgeon and many, many others compiled here, celebrities sure pick out some seriously hilarious names for their kids.

Not all of them, obvi. But in Hollywood, there sure as heck are a disproportionate percentage of little kid names that are straight up ridic.

Check out the 25 most absurd ones given by the most absurd people.

1. North West

Kimye and daughter

North West. The spawn of Kimye being named after a direction may be the dumbest thing in human history. At the same time, if she doesn’t grow up to have a signature fragrance called North by North West, this is not a planet we wanna be living on.

2. Kyd

David duchovny and tea leoni

Yes, Kyd. David Duchovny mailed that one in worse than his alleged acting on Californication.

3. Kal-El Cage

Nicolas cage mug shot

Nicolas Cage named one of his kids Kal-El, a fact not related to him being wasted out of his mind in this mug shot … although that could explain a lot of things.

4. Spurgeon

Spurgeon seewald photo

Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald’s baby son Spurgeon is named after Charles Spurgeon, an influential Baptist preacher from the 19th Century. It also is the subject of an awesome page on Urban Dictionary, and will probably make lil’ Spurge glad he’s home schooled later in life.

5. Reign Aston Disick

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick went relatively conventional with their first two children Mason and Penelope. For the third, however, they opted for a name fit for a Lord: REIGN Aston Disick. If only his dad weren’t the deadbeat Lord of six different rehab centers.

6. Royalty

Also going the regal route (and the unmarried one): Chris Brown has a baby with a model named Nia Amey. Her name is Royalty. Yes, #ROYALTY.

Jessa Duggar Posts ADORABLE Photo of Baby Spurge!

Spurgeon Seewald is one happy little fella.

New mom Jessa Duggar shared a bedtime photo of her son sleeping with a big smile on his little face last night. All together now … AWW!

“Have to wonder what it is that babies dream about…” Jessa captioned the Facebook post, adding in a smiley face and a well-earned heart emoji.

Jessa, 23, and husband Ben Seewald, 20, welcomed their first-born child, Spurgeon Elliott, on November 5 after a grueling 48-hour labor.

He weighed 9 lbs. 11 oz. and measured 21.5 inches long at birth and is named after 19th century Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon.

The new mom says that sometimes, it still hasn’t truly hit her what she’s been through and what a magical experience this has been:

“When we got home from the hospital, we had the baby on the bed between us, and we were lying there … it seemed like a dream.”

And then Jana Duggar came and took care of him so they could sleep, but never received any of the credit. So it goes in Duggarland.

As for first-time father Ben, he notes, “Jessa and I are trying to call each other Mom and Dad just so this whole being-parents thing can sink in.”

One would think two days of laboring to push him out, then having a baby human living with you would be enough, but to each their own.

Check out more photos of Spurgeon Seewald below!
