Joni Mitchell: In Coma, Possibly Near Death, Sources Say

Folk music icon Joni Mitchell was hospitalized back in March after being found unconscious at her home in Los Angeles.

Now, nearly a month later, sources are saying the singer's condition has only worsened, and she may be in her final days.

TMZ reports that Leslie Morris, a lifelong friend of Mitchell's, has filed papers for a conservatorship so that she might make decisions regarding Mitchell's continued care.

No relatives of Mitchell's have volunteered for the task, and many believe that Morris is making the move so that she'll have the authority to have her friend removed from life support, in compliance with Mitchell's wishes.

TMZ is reporting that doctors have described Mitchell as being "so impaired as to be incapable of being assessed," and they have determined that there is little to no chance that she will ever regain consciousness.

Mitchell was one of the most recognized and influential musicians of the '60s and '70s, and her songs continue to be covered by a wide variety of artists today.

Contemporary singer-songwriters such as Taylor Swift have cited Mitchell as a major influence and a hundreds of celebrities have publicly offered their thoughts and prayers to the 71-year-old in recent weeks.
