Mo’Nique is NOT holding back in this new interview — not that she ever does anyway.
But this is a special occasion, because this time?
Mo’Nique is really letting loose with all the details about her marriage. Her open marriage.
Yeah, you know it’s going to get scandalous.
She was on Watch What Happens Live when she was asked about her ten-year marriage to Sidney Hicks. She’s always admitted that she and Sidney don’t really go for that whole monogamy deal, but she gave some interesting details here.
She started off by talking about the “rules” of the relationship.
“The rule is simply honesty,” she said.
“When you start asking people about relationships … What about this one? What about that one?”
“Often times with people,” she went on, “we can’t say, ‘This is how I’m feeling.’ You find out, it’s so not about sex. It’s so not about, ‘Can you be with other people?"”
So what is it about, Mo’Nique?
“It’s simply about I won’t take any secrets to my grave nor will he take any to his.”
She also made it very clear that, even though catty strangers like to theorize differently, the arrangement was definitely her idea.
“Now, the world took and said ‘Oh, my god, Mo’Nique will let that man sleep with anybody, because she’s a fat girl and he’s a beautiful man,"” she said.
“I’m like, ‘OK, world. It wasn’t his idea. It was mine."”
“[It] was my idea,” she stressed. “When we first had the conversation, it was because I was still in the mindset of ‘I’m an entertainer; I’m a performer and I want to have it all."”
“So I said, ‘I want to have an open marriage.’ … It was just being able to sit down and have that dialogue to say, ‘Hey, let’s always make sure we’re open and honest."”
Mo’Nique ended this little discussion by advising other people to “try it and find out” if they’re into it.
“Now almost 11 years later,” she added, “of course it’s evolved, and it’s evolved into this beautiful space of no secrets.”
OK.
No, it’s great that Mo’Nique and Sidney apparently feel so great about having an open marriage, but the way she talks about it is just kind of obnoxious, right?
What works for one couple won’t necessarily work for another, so for her to tell every married person to sleep with someone other than their spouse, it’s just not great.
It’s also kind of annoying how she makes it sound like her marriage is full of this great, beautiful truth that monogamous couples couldn’t possibly understand.
We’re happy for you, Mo’Nique, we really are, but come on, girl.
Be a little more chill about it.
