We now know the exact reason why Mary Tyler Moore is no longer with us.
As previously reported, the iconic actress died last Wednesday at the age of 80.
She had been in the hospital for about a week prior to her passing, hooked up to a ventilator for several days before succumbing to what TMZ confirms was an incident of cardiopulmonary arrest.
According to this death certificate, Moore was suffering through severe heath issues due to aspiration pneumonia, hypoxia and diabetes mellitus.
After having trouble getting oxygen into her tissues, the actress went into cardiac arrest.
The former Dick Van Dyke Show and Mary Tyler Moore Show star was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 33 years old.
Along with animal welfare, it became one of the main topics about which Moore spoke and advocated for throughout her adult life.
On Sunday, Moore was laid to rest at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Fairfield, Connecticut, according to the Connecticut Post.
The private ceremony was attended by approximately 50 of the actress’s loved one, family and friends.
The funeral was then open to the public in the afternoon for fans looking to honor the late ex-sitcom star and legendary comedian.
According to a spokesperson for the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Moore was buried in a multi-plot location “that overlooks a large pond.”
Moore died with her husband of 33 years by her side.
She also left this world with the thoughts, prayers and condolences of countless fans and celebrities pouring forth over social media.
The actress broke barriers starring sitcom roles in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming one of the first women to not just anchor her own show – but to also talk openly about life as a single, working woman.
References made by Moore’s character to birth control at the time, for instance, took viewers by total surprise.
Later in life, however, Moore was forced to back away from the spotlight a bit due to her health problems.
In May of 2011, the actress underwent elective surgery to remove a benign tumor of the lining tissue of the brain.
By 2014, friends say she was battling problems with her eyesight, kidneys and heart.
Moore earned an Oscar nomination in 1980 for Best Actress for the film Ordinary People.
She was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Screen Actor’s Guilt Awards in 2012 and again via an in memoriam segment at this past Sunday’s SAG Awards.
She last acted on screen for an episode of Hot in Cleveland in 2013, which reunited her with former co-star Betty White.
The tragic passing was confirmed last week by Moore’s longtime representative, Mara Buxbaum, who said via statement:
“Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine.
“A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”
We continue to mourn the death of Moore.
But we’re comforted by the knowledge that her influence will continue to be felt across Hollywood for many years to come.
May she rest in peace.
