Keith Hefner Dies; Brother of Hugh Hefner Was 87

Keith Hefner – the brother of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and frequent co-star on the reality series The Girls Next Door – has passed away at the age of 87.

In a statement issued this morning, his family revealed that Hefner passed away this morning at his home in Beverly Hills.

Though no cause of death was given, Hefner had been battling cancer for several months.

In addition to his role on the popular E! series that ran from 2005-2010, Hefner assisted his brother with the business side of the Playboy empire and experienced some success as an actor.

Hefner appeared in several films and had a recurring role as an enemy spy on the popular ’60s sitcom Get Smart.

Keith continued to work as an executive at Playboy – where he functioned as head of Bunny training and recruitment – until he became ill last year.

Hefner is credited with inventing the “Bunny Dip” – the signature move used to serve drinks by waitresses at the Playboy Club.

Keith assumed an executive position at Playboy shortly after his younger brother started the magazine with a $ 1,000 loan from their mother in 1953.

Since then, it’s become one of the world’s most recognized brands, and Keith was one of its most beloved ambassadors.

Keith Emerson Dies; Emerson, Lake & Palmer Keyboardist Was 71

Keith Emerson – the prog rock keyboardist who co-founded the legendary trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer – has passed away at the age of 71.

No cause of death has been given, but Emerson’s death was described as “sudden.”

Sources say the musician had plans to begin touring Japan next week. His girlfriend discovered his body this afternoon at his home in Santa Monica.

A pioneering figure in the 1970s rock scene, Emerson was the first musician to tour with a Moog synthesizer, an unwieldy, futuristic-sounding instrument that had previously only been used in studio sessions by bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Emerson was revered by musicians for his technical mastery, and beloved by audiences for his onstage antics, such as using knives to wedge down keys on his synthesizer, or playing two keyboards at once.

Along with Rick Wright or Pink Floyd and Tony Banks of Genesis, Emerson was one of the instrumentalists who did for organs and synthesizers what Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton had already for done for guitars.

Social media tributes to Emerson have been pouring in from all over the globe, and not surprisingly, many of them come from musicians who credit him for making keyboards cool and inspiring them to take piano lessons.

Joey Floyd Dies; Toby Keith Band Member Was 54

Joey Floyd – an actor turned musician who played multiple instruments in Toby Keith’s Easy Money Band – has passed away at the age of 54.

Joey Floyd

Floyd had reportedly been battling cancer, according to media reports.

After getting his start in the entertainment industry playing Willie Nelson’s son in the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose, Floyd turned his attention to music.

He became a skilled banjo and fiddle player, and made a career out of it.

In addition to his time in Keith’s band, Floyd toured and recorded with several top artists, including his mentor, Nelson.

Nelson was the one who introduced Floyd to Keith in the early ’90s, and the two are said to have hit it off creatively and personally from the start.

After losing most of his possessions in the Nashville floods of 2010, Floyd devoted much of his time to helping others whose lives had been devastated by natural disasters.

Keith posted the following statement to his official Facebook page moments ago:

“Our dear friend and band member Joey Floyd passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer.”

“There will be a hole on stage and a hole in the hearts of all that loved him. Rest in peace ol’ friend.”

Floyd is survived by his wife, Laurin Floyd.

Keith Urban Mourns Late Father

The father of country music superstar Keith Urban has lost his battle with cancer.

This sad news was relayed to fans via a message on the official Keith Urban website.

Referencing his wife, Nicole Kidman, Urban wrote the following to readers:

“I’ve been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support that Nic and I, and our family, have received since my dad’s passing on Saturday night.”

The American Idol judge added that his dad is “finally at peace” after such a long battle with such a debilitating disease.

Urban went on to credit his father’s affection for Don Williams and other country artists as a major reason for why he went into this industry.

You don’t exactly see many Australian country music singers, after all.

“My dad’s love of country music and America set me on my life’s journey, and shaped so much of who I am today,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has kept us all in your thoughts and prayers.”

Bob Urban was placed in hospice care about a week prior to his passing.

His son, meanwhile, will be front and center once again when American Idol kicks off its final season on January 6.

We send our thoughts and prayers to his family.
