2018 Video Music Awards: All the Most Memorable Moments!

Well, another VMAs are in the books, and while the show no longer has quite the cultural impact it enjoyed in its heyday, it was still the evening"s most widely-discussed (and debated) topic.

And what were those millions of tweeters talking about?

Well, there were the 2018 VMA winners, of course, but the show has always been more about the performances than the awards.

And as always, the show had plenty of unforgettable moments, including Madonna"s Aretha Franklin tribute that left some fans scratching their heads.

Jump into the gallery below to relive that awkward affair, along with all the other GIFs, gaffes, and showstoppers from MTV"s biggest night:

1. Backstreet’s Back

Backstreets back

Before the show officially began, the Backstreet Boys wowed the crowd with a red carpet performance of their new single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” The band later presented the Song of the Year award.

2. The Hills Are Alive!

Hills reunion

The cast of the beloved MTV reality show The Hills kept the throwback theme going by reuniting on the red carpet.

3. Rebooted!

The hills reboot its really happening watch the teaser

MTV took the opportunity to reveal that the show would be rebooted for another season, seemingly in an effort to further alienate the network’s core demographic.

4. B for…Baby?

B forbaby

Cardi B introduced the first act of the night, but not before fooling the audience into thinking she was breastfeeding on stage (she was actually holding a swaddled-up Moon Man trophy).

5. The Opener

Shawn mendes at 2018 vmas

Shawn Mendes kicked the show off with a raucous performance of his single “In My Blood.” At one point during, a fake rainstorm drenched Mendes … and we imagine his fans were quite alright with that.

6. Queen

Nicki Minaj took one of the first big prizes of the night. During her acceptance speech for Best Hip-Hop Video, the rapper defended Fifth Harmony in response to jokes from presenter Tiffany Haddish.

Golden Globes: 13 Most Memorable (and Powerful) Moments

Two moving movies and one HBO television show won big at the 2018 Golden Globes.

But what were the moments everyone is talking about in the aftermath of a unique ceremony that dedicated over three hours of speeches and presentations to victims of sexual harassment?

From a winning monologue to a bold two words uttered by a former Oscar winner, scroll down to find out…

1. The Host with the Most…

The host with the most

… great jokes. Seth Meyers receives strong marks for a monologue that was both funny, relevant and unafraid to call out the major names who have been busted for sexual misconduct.

2. Nicole Kidman Won the First Award of the Night…

Nicole kidman won the first award of the night

… and then said this: “Keith Urban, when my cheek is against yours, everything melts away — and that is love. It’s true. I love you so much.” Total and complete swoon.

3. Natalie Portman Wore Black…

Natalie portman wore black

… but she also used words to speak out against the power imbalance in Hollywood. While introducing the nominated Best Directors with Ron Howard, Portman, the actress tossed in two words a pair of important and pointed words: “And here are the ALL MALE nominees…”

4. Friends Forever?

Friends forever

More like icon forever. Jennifer Aniston was all of us in presenting on stage with her idol, Carol Burnett. Their bit included the veteran comedian mistaking the actress for Will & Grace star Debra Messing… and Aniston finally getting the chance to tug her idol’s ear.

5. Sterling K. Brown Makes History

Sterling k brown makes history

Brown earned the trophy for best actor in a television series in a drama, becoming the first black man to do so. He then said on stage: “[Series creator] Dan Fogelman throughout the majority of my career I’ve benefited from color blind casting. Like, ‘Hey let’s throw a brother in this role.’ It’s really cool, but then Dan, you wrote a role for a black man that could only be played by a black man. So what I really appreciate about this thing is I’m being seen for who I am and being appreciated for who I am, and it makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me and anyone who looks like me. So thank you, Dan.”

6. Tonya Harding for None of the Wins

Tonya harding for none of the wins

Allison Janney won for her role in I, Tonya, a movie that paints the former figure skater as a victim. The winner then gave Harding, who was in attendance, a shout-out. Isn’t this still the same person who has admitted she knew ahead of time of a planned attack against Nancy Kerrigan?!? Perhaps she doesn’t deserve such honor and recognition.

13 Memorable Moments from the 2016 MTV VMAs

The 2016 MTV VMAs were a bit weird.

We didn"t have a host, for example, and it resulted in a clunky program that felt thrown together.

There"s also a good chance Key & Peele ruined their careers forever with that half-assed opening segment.

That said, there were a lot of memorable moments during the MTV extravaganza. To wit…

1. Kanye Said WHAT?!?

Kanye west at the vmas i love taylor swift and ray j

He referenced Amber Rose. And Taylor Swift. And Ray J! Click above to see what we mean.

2. It’s Britney, Bitch!

Its britney bitch

Britney returned to the VMA stage and it was a delight. She may have been down, but she’s finally back. As always, she lip synced her way through her performance, but with such an energetic dance routine, it’s kind of obvious why. Who would have thought Britney would ever return to the VMA stage? Not us.

3. Love for Rihanna?

A hug for rihanna

Drake went all out in his glowing speech about Rihanna when presenting her with an award. “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22-years-old,” Drake admitted, before leaning in for a kiss. Rihanna looked super shy and the two of them hugged it out.

4. Ryan Lochte’s Apology

Jimmy fallon dressed as ryan lochte

Jimmy Fallon has always been great when he acts like a celebrity. You can only imagine his delight when he got to act as Ryan Lochte. It was full of zingers. Michael Phelps even enjoyed it. His best moment was when he addressed which video was best. “I couldn’t tell you even if there was a gun to my head.”

5. Rihanna’s Long Ass Show

Rihanna fans were treated to four performances from the superstar. Four is a bit much, but they were all very great performances and she didn’t stop to cry half way through. Who knew Rihanna would essentially perform her current tour at the VMAs?

6. Ariana & Nicki’s Workout

Ariana grande and nicki minaj perform at the mtv vmas

Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj performed their new song at the VMAs. It was pretty crazy, but did they really need to turn it all into a workout? There is such a thing as too far and these two most definitely went there.

Well, sort of. In order to encourage young people to vote, Cena dressed like Hillary Clinton and Victoria Justice dressed like Donald Trump and it was… scary.

2. Two Legends Collide

Kobe Bryant presented Justin Timberlake with the Decade Award, considering the singer has a record 23 Teen Choice Awards on his resume. The artist left fans with a nice message, encouraging teens to “be the greatest generation yet.”

A selfie challenge

At one point, in an effort to make the show about the fans as much as possible, the hosts declared a 30-second selfie challenge, where they went around snapping as many selfies as they could in that short amount of time with folks in attendance.

4. An Important Message

Jessica Alba and Ne-Yo led a tribute to victims of gun violence and their families.

5. Jennifer Garner Shines

Garner and her young Miracles from Heaven costar, Kiley Rogers, both accepted the surfboard for Choice Drama Movie. Whole holding her surfboard, Garner left a special message for all the children fighting their own medical battles: “Thanks to everyone, we were definitely the underdog in this category. That’s so exciting. It’s amazing to us the impact this movie was able to have, and have all your guys appreciate it means the world to us… All the kids who are in a hospital waiting for a miracle, don’t give up hope!”

6. OUCH

Laura Marano, of Austin & Ally fame, actually ran into the stage microphone. But she recovered nicely!

Leo and Brie won.

Spotlight pulled an upset.

Chris Rock put Jada in her place.
