Aretha Franklin"s Family Not Upset Over Madonna"s Flubbed VMAs Tribute
Madonna tried (and failed) to adequately pay tribute to Aretha Franklin at the VMAs this week — and while many of Aretha’s fans are pissed … the woman’s own kin isn’t. We spoke with one of Aretha’s nephews, Tim Franklin, who says the family was…
Madonna Tries, Mostly Fails to Defend Aretha Franklin Tribute at the VMAs
The Material Girl went ahead on Monday night and earned herself a new nickname:
The Narcissistic, Disrespectful, Rambling Woman Who Managed to Screw Up a Tribute to Arguably the Greatest Singer of All-Time.
It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it does sum up what transpired yesterday evening at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.
Prior to presenting the award for Video of the Year (which went to Camila Cabello), the 60-year old singer was asked to talk about Aretha Franklin, who died last Thursday at the age of 73.
But instead of saying nice things about this iconic artist, Madonna told a rambling story about, well… herself.
You see, a long time ago, Madonna was struggling to make it as a dancer, so she went to a musical theater audition with a group of French producers.
“Why not?” she thought at the time, telling this long story on stage in front of a consued crowd and adding:
“The worst that can happen is I can go back to getting robbed, held at gunpoint, and being mistaken for a prostitute in my third-floor walk-up that was also a crack house.”
Okay, sure. Yeah. Tell us more, Madge…
It turned out that Madonna nailed the dance portion of the audition yet she panicked when those in charge asked her to produce sheet music and sing.
She wasn’t prepared for such a request!
“I had to think fast. My next meal was on the line,” she said, finally bringing this winding tale back to the late subject at suppose hand:
“Fortunately, one of my favorite albums was Lady Soul by Aretha Franklin. I blurted out, ‘You Make Me Feel!’ Silent. ‘You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman!’”
So… Madonna sang this famous song, the producers loved it, but she actually didn’t get the gig.
She did get a job in Paris as a result of the audition, though, and… SIGH.
You really need to just watch clips from this convoluted, self-serving speech below:
How did an Aretha Franklin tribute end up being a story all about Madonna’s early years as an entertainer?
Simple, Madonna explained in a follow-up Instagram post: This was never supposed to be a tribute!
“I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin!” wrote Madonna as a caption to a photo (below) of her and Cabello.
Continued Madonna in her own defense:
“I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her!
“That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.”
Madonna did conclude her speech at the VMAs by stating:
None of this would have happened, could have happened without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today.
And I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight. I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Not very apologetic in her Instagram post, Madonna slammed her critics and reiterated her affection for Franklin, closing her statement as follows:
“Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
“I Love Camilla! Congrats! I LOVE my dress! AND. I love-L O V E!! and there is nothing anyone can say or do that will change that.”
Well… okay then!
We guess that settles that.
Madonna loves Aretha. And Cabello. And her own fashion taste. And love in general.
And, let’s not forget what Madonna also loves most of all, even in the wake of maybe the most influential artist in history passing away.
HERSELF.

MTV VMAs Flashback: Ladies and Gentlemen... Kelly Clarkson!
Kelly Clarkson won American Idol in 2002.
But she won the hearts, minds and, yes, even souls of music fans everywhere three years later.
At the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, the original Idol champion belted out what most people would probably say – even now, even all this time later – is her best track:
Since U Been Gone.
The song is more than just a female empowerment anthem.
It is pop music at its finest: catchy, memorable, with a message to which many can relate and full of notes that only a select few artists can hit.
Clarkson, of course, is one of those artists.
She has a voice nearly unparalleled in this generation and, some could argue, in any generation.
For this Video Music Awards performance, Clarkson brought every ounce of energy at her disposal, rocking out to the single while rain poured down all over her face and body and she mingled with folks in the crowd.
It was, in every sense of the phrase, a true show stopper.
It was the kind of performance that announced to the universe that a new superstar had truly arrived. (One who had almost platinum blonde hair at the time!)
Since this time, of course, Clarkson has merely proved those predictions to be accurate.
She has collected numerous VMAs and Grammy Awards and is as beloved as any solo artist out there.
And the video featured here is, in many respects, where that all began.
Go back in time and relive it now!

Katy Perry: Disastrous VMAs Hosting Has American Idol Producers in a PANIC!
Folks who didn’t watch the VMAs on Sunday because they were too busy watching relatives bone on Game of Thrones or escaping rising floodwaters, answer this: What did you hear, after-the-fact, about Katy Perry?
Katy Perry was the host, and she was just … not overwhelming. No huge controversies, sure, but not even Katy’s terrible opening monologue was especially memorable.
That’s a problem for Katy, but it might be an even bigger problem for American Idol producers, who are reportedly very concerned that they’re paying $ 25 million to Katy Perry to be a judge only for her to flop.
On Sunday, I had friends over, and they mentioned that traffic was especially slow near my home.
Why? Because American Idol auditions were in town.
Yes, in case you’ve managed to forget, American Idol is coming back, like some archetypal horde that people thought had been defeated.
The biggest stir of publicity about it is Katy Perry’s salary of $ 25 million.
Don’t get us wrong, she’s a big-time celebrity who’s hosted the Superbowl, which is probably what the American Idol producers and the network were thinking when they hired her.
What they clearly weren’t thinking about:
One, that Katy Perry was singing for her Superbowl Halftime show, which is very different from sitting at a table and talking and judging.
Two, that Katy Perry was pretty famously upstaged at that show by Left Shark. You didn’t forget Left Shark, did you?
Well now, RadarOnline is reporting that ABC higher ups and American Idol showrunners are worried that they made a mistake by hiring Katy Perry to be a judge.
It sounds like they’re panicking, actually.
RadarOnline‘s source reports that her lackluster hosting over the weekend is what has them so concerned.
“They are paying her $ 25 million and she was a total dud [on the VMAs].”
You might be wondering how they didn’t catch it earlier, right?
Here’s how:
“No one ever auditioned her for the new Idol job and they are freaking out that they hired someone who is terrible on live television.”
Oh dear!
Usually, if you get a job without applying for it (or auditioning, in this case), it’s because someone who’s seen your work up close before (maybe a coworker or a former boss) is either doing the hiring or has vouched for you.
It sounds like Katy was just offered the gig, sight unseen.
ABC had already had concerns, RadarOnline had previously reported, that Katy Perry might upstage contestants.
(Like Mariah Carey)
Or that she might just need to tone down … not her look, but her very attention-grabbing personality.
(As far as we can tell, that’s not a euphemism for her boobs)
Judges are supposed to evaluate contestants, not overshadow them.
Now, though, it sounds like ABC and American Idol are afraid that Katy’s just going to fall flat like she did at the VMAs.
Just because someone is good at singing and performing doesn’t mean that they’re good at talking on camera.
Similarly, like, just because someone’s great at giving interview or interviewing people doesn’t mean that they have a dazzling singing voice or would make an amazing performer.
This should be a lesson to us all, we suppose: make sure that you hire the best and most highly recommended babysitter or dog-walker or whatever. Not just the one who happens to be hot.

The Weeknd Bailed on VMA"s Because He Just Wasn"t Into It
The Weeknd was a no-show at the VMAs this weekend, and the reason isn’t all that complicated … he just didn’t feel like it. Abel left a lot of people high and dry … the MTV folks announced he’d perform. He was also nominated for 4 awards. Here’s…
Lorde at the VMAs: What the Hell Was That?!
In terms of both performances and onstage drama, the Video Music Awards tend to offer up a very mixed bag.
Part of the problem is that the show is always so heavily-hyped that it"s virtually impossible to live up to fan expectations every year.
Add to that the fact that MTV"s signature award show has served as the backdrop for some of the most memorable pop cultural moments of the past several decades, and it"s not hard to see why the ceremony so often disappoints.
The 2017 VMAs were loaded with the potential to go down in history, what with the tension surrounding rivalries between Taylor Swift and … well, everyone.
But despite some memorable moments (Kendrick Lamar"s performance was one for the ages.) the proceedings felt oddly lifeless.
And for many fans, the surprisingly blasé tone of the night was perfectly encapsulated by Lorde"s seemingly apathetic performance of "Homemade Dynamite", a track from her sophomore studio album.
The Kiwi songstress didn"t sing the song, or even lip sync along with it, opting instead for an interpretive dance routing that left many fans confused (and maybe even concerned).
Of course, the 20-year-old had good reason for keeping quiet and deserves all the credit in the world for getting on stage, having revealed before the show that she was suffering from such a bad case of the flu that she needed an IV.
It"s a very good explanation for a very admirable (albeit odd) performance, but don"t go using that excuse in your own life.
"Sorry, boss, I"m a little under the weather. Gonna have to interpretive dance my way through this presentation."
There are many things Lorde can pull off, that the rest of us simply cannot.
Check out her much talked-about performance below:
Pink Just Sent the Most Inspiring Message of All at the VMAs
Pink didn"t merely take home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at last night"s MTV VMAs.
Nor did she merely perform a medley of her most beloved singles.
The superstar solo artist stole the entire show with an acceptance speech that was raw, honest, inspiring and truly from the heart.
After being introduced by good friend Ellen DeGeneres. The 37-year-old pop star used her time at the microphone to share an empowering story about her six-year-old daughter, Willow.
And it all started because Willow told her mom she was "ugly" because she looked like a "boy."
Instead of getting angry, however, Pink responded to this problem by taking action.
She explains below how she compiled a PowerPoint presentation of "androgynous rock stars and artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us."
Among those she selected and named: Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, Prince, Janis Joplin, George Michael and Elton John.
"When people make fun of me, that"s what they use,"" Pink said she told her child. "I look like a boy … I have too many opinions … My body is too strong."
She then asked her toddler:
"Do you see me growing my hair? … Do you see me changing my body? … Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?"
The crowd rightfully applauded along as Pink ran through this series of questions.
"We don"t change," Pink concluded. "We take gravel in a shell and we make a pearl, and we help other people to change. … You, my darling girl, are beautiful and I love you."
Amazing.
"I am shooketh. I am dead. I am crying. She"s iconic," said host Katy Perry after Pink wrapped up.
We absolutely agree.

Drake Bell & Josh Peck End Feud at the VMAs: See The Picture!
We think it’s fair to say that we were all saddened to learn that Drake Bell and Josh Peck were no longer friends earlier this year.
For as long as we can remember, they have been Drake and Josh and having them at odds was totally ruining our childhood memories.
Earlier this year, Josh married longtime girlfriend Paige O’Brien in an intimate ceremony in Malibu, and there was a glaring omission: Drake was not on the guest list, and he was pissed.
“When you’re not invited to the wedding the message is clear,” Bell said on Twitter after finding out about the event.
“True colors have come out today. Message is loud and clear. Ties are officially cut. I’ll miss you brotha.”
In the days that followed, a source close to Peck confirmed to US Weekly that Josh felt betrayed that Drake would slam him in such a public manner.
“At Josh’s wedding this weekend some guests were asking Josh Peck where Drake was. Josh told everyone that he and Drake hadn’t spoken in three years. They would tweet each other back on social media a couple of times a year, but never actually spoke,” the tipster dished.
“When Drake didn’t get invited to Josh’s wedding, he started tweeting all of those dramatic memes. Josh was really hurt. They aren’t close anymore, and Josh had a very small wedding.”
We all know that weddings can cost a lot of money, so we can definitely get on board with Josh if he iced Drake out because they were no longer close.
Why would you want to part with cash for someone who you no longer consider a close friend?
The main issue, however, seemed to center on the fact that Drake & Josh producer, Dan Schneider managed to snag an invite to the momentous occasion.
“Drake was upset that Dan Schneider was there,” the insider continued.
“Because he and Josh were friends years ago, he thought he would have gotten an invite, even though they never talk.”
From then on, it seemed like there was no hope for the former friends … until now.
Thanks to the 2017 MTV VMAs, we can now reveal that the former BFFs actually called time on their feud and we are totes doing a happy dance right about now.
Have a look at the picture below.
Unless Drake is secretly holding a knife at Josh’s back, we think it would be fair to assume that they are friends.
“Reunited and it feels so good,” Drake captioned the above picture on Twitter.
Josh even shared the picture, saying: “Hug me.”
It’s unclear whether they will ever be able to be as close as they once were but this is progress.
What do you think of all of this?
Sound off below!
Paris Jackson at the VMAs: White Supremacy Sucks!
For the most part, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards avoided politics.
Yes, Katy Perry made a couple cracks in her terrible opening monologue about how the world was falling apart, but few stars referenced Donald Trump or the mess he"s created during their time on stage.
With the exception of Paris Jackson, that is.
The only daughter of Michael Jackson presented the very first trophy of the evening, taking a few moments before doing so in order to address the cloud of White Supremacy that is sadly hanging over our nation.
“I hope we leave here tonight remembering that we must show these Nazi, white supremacist jerks in Charlottesville and all over the country that as a nation with liberty as our slogan we have zero tolerance for their violence, hatred, and their discrimination,” said Paris, to loud applause.
She ended her brief statement by saying the following:
"We must resist.”
Incredibly/tragically, this is an actual topic of debate at the moment after a group of neo-Nazis gathered in Virginia a few weeks ago and created havoc around Charlottesville.
Their actions led to the murder of a 32-year old protestor named Heather Heyer, whose mom actually spoke out as well on stage at the VMAs.
Here is what she had to say:
And here is what Paris Jackson had to say.
