MTV VMAs Flashback: Ladies and Gentlemen... Kelly Clarkson!

Kelly Clarkson won American Idol in 2002.

But she won the hearts, minds and, yes, even souls of music fans everywhere three years later.

At the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, the original Idol champion belted out what most people would probably say – even now, even all this time later – is her best track:

Since U Been Gone.

The song is more than just a female empowerment anthem.

It is pop music at its finest: catchy, memorable, with a message to which many can relate and full of notes that only a select few artists can hit.

Clarkson, of course, is one of those artists.

She has a voice nearly unparalleled in this generation and, some could argue, in any generation.

For this Video Music Awards performance, Clarkson brought every ounce of energy at her disposal, rocking out to the single while rain poured down all over her face and body and she mingled with folks in the crowd.

It was, in every sense of the phrase, a true show stopper.

It was the kind of performance that announced to the universe that a new superstar had truly arrived. (One who had almost platinum blonde hair at the time!)

Since this time, of course, Clarkson has merely proved those predictions to be accurate.

She has collected numerous VMAs and Grammy Awards and is as beloved as any solo artist out there.

And the video featured here is, in many respects, where that all began.

Go back in time and relive it now!

Kelly Clarkson Makes Emotional Plea for Gun Control

Kelly Clarkson seemed like an unusual choice at first to host the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.

She"s a singer, after all, not a comedian or even an especially notable performer.

Only a few minutes into her monologue, however, it quickly became clear on Sunday night that Clarkson was the right woman for the job.

Not because Clarkson told jokes and not even because she sang an impressive medley of hits, even though she later did exactly this.

But because the original American Idol is a Texas native and was therefore the ideal celebrity to stand up and talk about last week"s tragic school shooting in Santa Fe.

"I’m a Texas girl and my home state has had so much heartbreak over this past year.

"Once again, y’all, we’re grieving more kids that have died for absolutely no reason at all,” Clarkson said as the MGM Grand venue was lit black at the start of this awards ceremony.

On Friday, 10 people were shot and killed at a high school in Texas, while 13 others were wounded.

“Tonight they wanted me to say that obviously, we want to pray for all the victims and families," Clarkson continued.

"They also wanted me to do a moment of silence and I’m so sick of moments of silence. It’s not working, obviously.”

Instead, therefore, Clarkson chose to be loud when it comes to this topic, not quiet.

"Why don’t we stop moments of silence and do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Change what’s happening, because it’s horrible.

"Mommas and daddies should be able to send their kids to school, to church, to movie theaters, to clubs. You should be able to live your life without that fear."

Clarkson is a mother of four young kids, two to whom she gave birth and two she took under her care upon marrying Brandon Blackstock.

She went on:

"We are failing our children, we’re failing our communities. We’re failing their families. I have four children.

"I can’t imagine getting that phone call or knock on the door. So instead of a moment of silence, I want to respect them and honor them with tonight y’all in your community, where you live, your friends, everybody.

"Let’s have a moment of action, let’s have a moment of change."

Clarkson"s speech will no doube engender controversy.

Plenty of viewers out there were probably standing and applauding, while others were probably wishing a music awards ceremony would stick to handing out music awards.

Prior to moving on and joking about how she isn"t qualified to host anything, Clarkson concluded:

"I hate talking about it but you have to talk about it or no change is going to happen."

Amen, right?

Allison Mack Tried to Recruit Emma Watson, Kelly Clarkson to Sex Slave Cult

Last week, former Smallville star Allison Mack was arrested for sex trafficking over her alleged role as a “master” in a sex-slave cult that masquerades as a women’s self-help pyramid scheme.

It has now come to light that she solicited other celebrities to join Nxivm.

Was she trying to turn Emma Watson and Kelly Clarkson into sex slaves for Keith Raniere?

On Friday, Allison Mack entered a plea of “not guilty” for sex trafficking and forced labor.

See, even if you pretend that it’s “empowering,” it is in fact illegal to coerce people to have sex through blackmail and the threat of beatings.

Yes, it’s still illegal even if the  initials are already branded on that woman’s body.

Mack is, of course, accused of recruiting women to join the pyramid scheme and then selecting which women would be ordered to Raniere’s bed.

And now it’s come out that she may have very brazenly tried to recruit two very familiar names over twitter:

Beloved Harry Potter star Emma Watson and sometimes controversial American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.

Allison Mack Tweet to Emma Watson

“I’m a fellow actress like yourself and involved in an amazing women’s movement I think you’d dig,” Mack wrote.

Her tweet continued:

“I’d love to chat if you’re open.”

A month later, when Watson still hadn’t taken the bait, Mack wrote:

“I participate in a unique human development and women’s movement I’d love to tell you about.”

Well … it certainly is unique as far as women’s movements go.

Allison Mack Tweet to Kelly Clarkson

Allison Mack also wrote to Kelly Clarkson.

With Clarkson, she used a somewhat vaguer approach, apparently hoping to dazzle the Since You’ve Been Gone singer with her “star power.”

“I heard through the grapevine that you’re a fan of Smallville.”

Smallville ran for 10 seasons. Its fan base was relatively small yet very dedicated.

“I’m a fan of yours as well! I’d love to chat sometime.”

Those are deceptive friendly words for such an ominous tweet.

While it doesn’t look like Watson or Clarkson fell for Mack’s invitation, that doesn’t make this any less bizarre.

It’s not surprising, however.

Mack was said to have quickly become one of Raniere’s favorites because he liked having a celebrity (or close enough) to recruit more people to Nxivm.

It only stands to reason that, either of her own volition or acting on Raniere’s orders, Mack would seek other celebrities with whom she might have an “in.”

Emma Watson is an outspoken feminist, so Mack clearly hoped that calling Nxivm a “women’s movement” would help to draw her in.

And since Kelly Clarkson apparently likes Smallville, well, who wouldn’t want to hear from an actor from a show that they love?

It’s not clear if she was determined to rope them into joining the sex slave cult, or was just trying to get them both in the “normal” self-help part of the organization to draw in more members.

There’s no doubt that Allison Mack was a major recruitment tool for Nxivm.

But some have called into question how much a willing participant she was in the abuse that she allegedly doled out.

We don’t know all of the evidence that the prosecution will present, but prosecutors may find themselves in a tricky situation.

If they successfully prove that the women in Raniere’s DOS program were unwilling participants and sex trafficking victims because of abuse and blackmail and brainwashing …

… Might Mack’s defense team use that to argue that she herself was also a victim?

They might also try to argue that, if Mack was capable of making her own choices, that the victims were all there of their own free will?

We’re not saying that we believe those arguments, but this is definitely a complicated case.

We’ll see how things work out.

Kelly Clarkson to The Voice Contestant: You Said WHAT About Me?!?

Kelly Clarkson is not one to stir up controversy.

She’s not one to engage in any feuds or get herself involved in really any scandals at all.

But the singer has felt the need to speak out against an accusation no one could have seen coming.

On last night’s edition of The Voice, an aspiring artist named Molly Stevens was shown the door… and she wasn’t happy about it.

The contestant, who is openly gay, wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post that she was upset by a comparison Clarkson made during the battle rounds.

For those who missed the episode, Kelly said Stevens reminded her of the Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge, which Stevens referred to as a “labeling trap” and “small minded.”

This is what she wrote in its entirety:

While I’m extremely honored to be in that category of talent, I do believe that comment did us all a disservice and only threw us into a labeling trap

It felt small minded to me and exactly what I feel we need to bring attention to the world. I am a singer-songwriter who happens to be gay.

And so it @melissa_etheridge and @indigogirlsmusic… But it’s a common stereotype that happens too often. People put us in boxes.

How about for today I am just Molly Stevens and you be you too.

clarkson accuse

As you can see above, Stevens also thanked her preacher for giving her the courage to make this statement.

But it’s not a statement Clarkson believes she deserves.

“Wow. This really bums me out,” the original American Idol Tweeted upon being informed of Stevens’ critique.

She continued, in her own strong defense:

“I need everyone to hear me and hear ALL OF THE WORDS I SAY.

“I compared Molly to Melissa Etheridge, Patty Griffin (a name that was left out conveniently), and the Indigo Girls purely because of the rasp in her voice and that she’s an amazing storyteller.”

kelly writes back

We tend to believe Kelly.

She’s never shown any hints of homophobia or of any kind of “small-minded” thinking.

She’s always seemed incredibly open and laid back and accepting, never really changing at all through the years, even as her fame sky-rocketed to very impressive levels.

Before this issue was brought up, the only thing Clarkson had ever gotten into trouble for was admitting she sometimes spanks her kids.

And even the reaction to that remark seemed a tad overblown.

What do you think of this so-called scandal?

Is it even a scandal?

Did Clarkson misspeak?

Or did Stevens just react in a bitter manner that she later thought better of upon deleting her comment and this really isn’t a story at all?

Sound off now!

The Voice Recap: Did Kelly Clarkson Make a Mistake?!

The Blind Auditions concluded on Tuesday night’s episode of The Voice, and let’s just say it was a night filled with some of the best performers of the season.

But who garnered the final places?

Let’s break down the five who advanced to the next stage of this long in the tooth competition series.

Genesis Diaz – “Praying”

Kesha is a vocal powerhouse, so anyone covering her songs is generally at an immediate disadvantage. However, this 19-year-old kicked her rendition off with solid footing.

Seriously, it was that good we could have mistaken her for Kesha if we had no idea what Kesha looked like. Adam Levine took a shine to her, and she joined his team.

Maybe Team Adam will have a winner, after all, you guys!

Sharane Calister – “Make It Rain”

This R&B singer burst on to the stage and immediately had chairs turning for her. She knew what she had to do to get through to the next stage, and boy, did she deliver.

Her high vocals were complemented by her big stage presence. She was confident, solid and an all-around enthralling performer. More like this, please!

Team Alicia will be good to Sharane, but song choice will be key for her from here on out.

Dallas Caroline –  “Always On My Mind”

On a night filled with solid performances, Dallas was out of place. The 17-year-old struggled during her Willie Nelson cover. Maybe it was nerves, but we’re sure there were better country singers out there.

A three-chair turn is rare, and it’s difficult to see what the coaches saw in her. It’s doubtful she will make it much further into the process.

Blake has his work cut out with this one.

Jackie Verna – “Peter Pan”

Jackie had a striking voice that could give anyone chills. Her performance was filled with set-pieces that will surely make it one of the most memorable auditions around.

There were a few shaky moments, but that could be attributed to nerves. She was a vocal delight, and just like that, Team Adam has two solid singers!

Amber Sauer – “Shape of You”

Amber made everyone aware she was a fan of Kelly from the get-go, so you can only imagine her surprise when she got Kelly to turn around for her.

The vocals were not fantastic, but there was something there that made her emerge as a likely contender to advance. The troubling thing is, Kelly has such a robust team that Amber could slip through the cracks.

Okay, so the Blind Auditions are over!

What did you think of them?

Sound off below.

The Voice Recap: Kelly Clarkson Joins the Panel!

The Voice Season 14 is a go, and that can only mean one thing:

A new wave of singers will engage in a fight to the death with the aim of emerging with a recording contract, some recognition, and hopefully, some staying power.

The judging panel consisted of Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys, and of course, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. The latter two are likely going to be with the show until the bitter end at this stage.

Why leave when you’re getting a healthy salary, and some recognition? The show still rates very well, so there’s that.

Let’s break down the first batch of Blind Auditions to see who emerged from the rest, and who is already circling the drain.

Britton Buchanan – “Trouble”

17-year-old, Britton, took to the stage first and his voice was one you would expect to make far into the competition. It was filled with solid moments.

The kid looks like someone you would expect to be in a boyband from the 1990s, but he’s got just enough charisma for an entire band.

He advanced to the next stage. Let’s face it; there would have been shouting from the streets if he was sent packing after that performance.

Rayshun LaMarr – “Don’t Stop Believing”

While Britton had a lot of charisma, Rayshun did not. His performance of the Journey classic was stilted, and not very pleasant to the ears.

It was not a great first attempt, but he advanced to the next stage. Will he be able to get a handle on his voice before it’s too late?

Kyla Jade – “See Saw”

Once upon a time, Kyla was a backup singer for the one and only Jennifer Hudson. Her solo performance on The Voice was something else.

She needs to make a clause in her contract with the show that only allows her to perform Aretha Franklin songs because there was something so compelling about her performance.

She knew what was expected of her and went the extra mile. More like this, please!

Kelsea Johnson –  “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”

This 21-year-old delivered a performance that was full of energy, excitement, and talent. She kept control of her beautiful voice throughout.

In turn, she was rewarded with a spot in the next stage of the competition. Not bad.

Drew Cole – “Sex and Candy ”

Drew is a 25-year-old bartender who “did not move to Los Angeles to be a bartender.” The good thing about him is that his voice is different enough from the others in the competition.

On a show like The Voice, it’s essential to make a lasting impression and Drew accomplished that goal.

D.R. King – “Believer”

D.R. struggled throughout his performance. It was not the most stable and made us wonder whether there was something else going on.

Maybe he could not get on board with the whole being on the show thing, but still, we’re surprised he made it through to the next stage.

Justin Kilgore – “Tomorrow”

Well, this may be our new contender to win the whole thing. He secured a four-chair turn that found the coaches battling to get the kid on their team.

He was polished and seemed to know what sound he was going for. That’s a big positive, and it means the coaches will get an early lead if they get him on board.

Kelly secured Justin, and all was right in the world!

Kelly Clarkson Accused of Diva Behavior on The Voice

It seems like just yesterday that we were hearing who won Season 13 of The Voice, but Season 14 will be here before you know it.

This year, Kelly Clarkson is joining the The Voice as one of the coaches.

But … apparently things aren’t all smiles behind the scenes. In fact, a report claims that Clarkson is a total diva backstage and almost impossible to work with.

35-year-old Kelly Clarkson first rose to fame on the inaugural season of American Idol.

From her humble, “white trash” beginnings — her words — she skyrocketed to stardom with a successful music career.

As much as fans hate when Kelly Clarkson says stupid things, they love to see her shut down body-shamers in a very down-to-earth way. Mostly, they love her music.

Now, she’s joining Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Alicia Keys as a coach on The Voice.

But, according to RadarOnline‘s source, Kelly Clarkson’s alleged diva behavior is causing some tensions and unhappiness and the season hasn’t even begun to air.

Apparently, there are a number of problems.

“She’s not the person that everyone thought she was going to be.”

Based upon Kelly Clarkson’s branding, people probably expected a down-to-earth, minimal-nonsense singer with humble roots who is hesitant to bash anyone.

And the source gets pretty specific about what they got instead.

“She is bossy and argumentative.”

Apparently some of the problems began before she even walked in the door.

“The other judges, especially Blake, already had an issue with her.”

That issue, it seems, was financial in nature.

“Because of the amount of money they reportedly paid her to join the cast.”

But it goes beyond the bottom line and extends to promos.

“One of the main issues is that producers are making Kelly a central focus on everything.”

This sounds familiar.

“And she is also taking center stage on all of the promos that are being shot so far.”

You know how Kate Mulgrew was famously unhappy with how Jeri Ryan become front-and-center on every billboard and ad for Star Trek: Voyager back in the ’90s?

This sounds like that same kind of resentment — but with personality issues to make things personal.

The source goes on to list Kelly Clarkson’s other alleged grating habits.

“She comes in when she wants to.”

Oooh, that’s never good. And very diva.

“She seems to think that it is all one big game.”

I mean, it is literally a talent competition. It’s a game.

(But we get their meaning, here — her alleged behavior is unprofessional to an off-putting degree)

“At the same time, she is overly certain that she will win this season.”

Cavalier and cocky at the same time? Yikes.

“Of course Blake is irritated with Kelly! Everyone is.”

Blake’s come up more than once, perhaps because we’ve heard some things about Blake Shelton’s alleged diva behavior, too.

It sounds like they both need a dose of reality. They’re on The Voice. Nobody gets to put on airs when they’re judging a reality series. No matter how much they’re getting paid.

Kelly Clarkson: Yes, I Spank My Kids!

SIGH.

Kelly Clarkson is once again on the receiving end of some serious mommy-shaming.

This time, however, we can at least understand where certain critics are coming from.

Back in April of last year, Clarkson actually received flak for giving her toddler Nutella, which was simply ridiculous.

And cruel.

And misguided.

And very unfair.

On Tuesday, though, the original American Idol champion conducted a radio interview with 98.9 The Buzz in Rochester, New York and went into surprising detail about how she sometimes disciplines her kids.

“I’m not above a spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into,” the singer said, referring to how she occasionally interacts with her three-year old and one-year old.

Aware that there’s some controversy surrounding this type of punishment, Clarkson added:

“I don’t mean hitting her hard. I just mean a spanking.”

The artist went on to say that she’s a product of spanking herself. This is how she was raised.’

“My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life, and I feel fine about it, and I do that as well,” Clarkson said, explaining:

“That’s a tricky thing, when you’re out in public, because then people are like, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking.”

As you might expect, this point of view did not go over with some trolls on the Internet.

They called Clarkson out for being unnecessarily violent with her kids.

Is a discussion over spanking better than a discussion over Nutella? Absolutely.

But we still have no idea what Kelly means by this exactly, and it’s very safe to assume she takes it easy on her children.

“I warn her,” Clarkson said of disciplining her three-year-old daughter, River Rose, with spanking.

“I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly it’s really helped. She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”

There you have it.

Granted, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents “do not spank or use other physical punishments” when disciplining children in a statement on their website.

This says the act “only teaches aggressive behavior, and becomes ineffective if used often.”

For this reason, a few Facebook followers lashed out at Clarkson in response to her post.

“Wish she would do some research making public ignorant comments. Spanking teaches violence,” wrote one individual, while another added:

“I never spanked my kids. I think it’s lazy parenting.”

Thankfully, others came to Clarkson’s defense.

“Good for her! Glad there are still parents out there that set limits for their kids and give consequences when needed,” replied one person, continuing:

“There is a difference between abuse and punishing out of love not anger. Spanking in a controlled manner and with loving correction can be a very good thing.”

For whatever reason, Clarkson has often been the subject of online vitriol.

But if you dish it out, you better be able to take it.

Because Clarkson has made it clear she’s not afraid of fighting back.

Kelly Clarkson & Pink are About to Make You Cry. All the Tears.

Kelly Clarkson and Pink are about to make you cry.

Not out of sadness, however.

Out of beautiful emotion.

The superstar solo artists joined forces on Sunday night at the American Music Awards for a duet that opened the yearly ceremony.

But this performance was unlike exciting openers in the past because it centered on a somber note in honor of all affected by recent mass shootings and other national tragedies.

Marking the first time they ever sang side by side on stage, Clarkson and Pink sang an emotional cover of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.”

It"s a sad ballad that is also meant to make everyone feel less alone in life.

We understand how much certain things hurt, Clarkson and Pink are basically saying with this rendition. But please remember that you aren"t alone

"I love Kelly Clarkson," Pink said just last month on Bravo"s Watch What Happens Live. "If I did a song with Kelly Clarkson I would get outsung."

Well, sure.

But that"s the case for like 99.99999% of the world"s population, too.

“This year, more than perhaps any other in recent history, we needed the power of music to help us escape the news of the day,” host Jamie Foxx said while introducing the beloved artists.

He added:

“We needed that power of music to help us heal from hurricanes, wild fires, hate, hatred-fueled violence: 2017 is the year that tested our faith. At these moments of crises, heroes emerge.”

After thanking the first responders, he concluded:

“As this year comes to a close we look forward to 2018 with hope. For, even as we mourn those who were lost, we know this:

"Together our strength will pull us through. Together we shall overcome the pain. Together we can unite as a people and as a nation.”

Amen, right, readers?

On a night that also saw Selena Gomez stir up some controversy and many singers take home awards, this number really stood out.

Kelly Clarkson: Being Skinny Made Me Suicidal

Kelly Clarkson is our hero.

We’ve said this a number of times over the years, as few celebrities are as comfortable in their own skin as the original American Idol winner.

But the admirable artist says in a new interview that it wasn’t always this way.

There was a time, in fact, when she hated the skin she was in so much that she went to a very, very, VERY dark place.

“When I was really skinny, I wanted to kill myself,” Clarkson says candidly in the latest issue of Attitude Magazine.

She explains:

“I was miserable, like inside and out, for four years of my life. But no one cared, because aesthetically you make sense.”

Clarkson says this period of weight loss and depression took place in 2004, right around when her second album was taking off.

She has already won American Idol, her singles were atop the charts and she was on the path to true stardom.

Signed to Clive Davis’ RCA Records during this phase of her career, she says she faced immense pressure to shed pounds and looks as “skinny” as her peers.

“It was a very dark time for me. I thought the only way out was quitting,” she says, adding:

“I like wrecked my knees and my feet because all I would do is put in headphones and run. I was at the gym all the time.”

Fast forward a few years to the release of Clarkson’s third album, “My December.”

The singer famously feuded with Davis over the inclusion of certain tracks on this record, eventually firing manager Jeff Kwatinetz as part of the overall disagreement.

“There’s a song on My December called ‘Sober.’ There’s this line – ‘picked the weeds but kept the flowers’ – and I just live my life by that, because you are who you surround yourself with,” Clarkson says here.

“I was around some really negative people, and I got out of it because I had a lot of great people there, too.”

Last spring, Kelly signed a deal with Atlantic Records. And she sounds pretty happy about it.

“It was a case of turning around, facing them and walking toward the light,” she now says.

Sadly, Clarkson still hears these days from critics who suck and who give her a hard time about her weight.

But she often fights back. She’s now about to let these trolls win.

“I don’t obsess about my weight, which is probably one of the reasons why other people have such a problem with it,” the star told Redbook at one point, expounding as follows:

“There are just some people who are born skinny and with a great metabolism – that is not me.

“I wish I had a better metabolism. But someone else probably wishes they could walk into a room and make friends with everyone like I can.

“You always want what someone else has.”

Clarkson’s next album comes out on October 27.

We’re totally gonna buy it.

We love her.

Kelly Clarkson Shuts Down Body Shamer on Twitter: What Did She Say?

Kelly Clarkson is not one to stay quiet when someone grates on her nerves, and we love her for her brutal honesty.

The latest drama for the 35-year-old centers around a troll on Twitter who took a swipe at the singer for her weight.

“You’re fat,” a troll fired at her, but as you can probably expect, Kelly did not take that jab lying down.

“…and still f—ing awesome,” Kelly fired back towards the troll. Yeah, you tell them, Kelly.

Understandably, fans were quick to jump to the American Idol winner’s defense, while complimenting her reaction to the hater.

“YAAAAS, KELLY, COME THROUGH. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED AND WONDROUS. YOU ARE A GODDESS. OMG KWEEN, SLAY,” said one fan.

“Seriously miserable people tweet others calling them fat. Bet Cliff couldn’t carry a tune to save his life,” said another.

It’s downright horrible that these people are hiding behind a keyboard taking swipes at people they do not like. Like we said earlier, Kelly has no qualms about letting everyone know it does not faze her.

When English media personality Katie Hopkins criticized Kelly’s weight in 2015, Clarkson had an epic response for her.

“Oh, she’s tweeted something nasty about me? That’s because she doesn’t know me. I’m awesome! It doesn’t bother me. It’s a free world. Say what you will,” Clarkson said.

That, however, was not the first time Kelly found herself being body shamed. In fact, she opened up to Ellen that same year about the severity of the situation.

“I love how people think that’s new — like, ‘Welcome to the past 13 years,’” she said at the time.

“Yeah, I was the biggest girl on [American Idol], too. And I wasn’t big, but people would call me big because I was the biggest one on Idol, and I’ve kind of always gotten that.”

Kelly Clarkson made headlines a few weeks back when it emerged that she ditched a return trip to American Idol in favor of taking on a coveted role on The Voice.

What do you think about all of this?
