Gawker Files For Bankruptcy Following Hulk Hogan Sex Tape Lawsuit; Thousands of Snarky Commenters in Mourning

Following weeks of insolvency rumors, Gawker Media – the sleazy blog network that makes PerezHilton.com look like a bastion of journalistic integrity – finally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today.

The move has been anticipated by many ever since a March 18 court ruling in which former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan was awarded $ 115 million in his lawsuit against the site.

That same week, a jury awarded Hogan an additional $ 25 million, thus putting Gawker on the hook for a total of $ 140 million.

Both decisions stemmed from the company’s decision to post portions of Hogan’s sex tape online.

Hogan filed a suit against Gawker for $ 100 million, alleging a violation of his privacy.

The jury saw it his way and then some  – awarding the iconic wrestler $ 15 million more than he asked for, and then slapping on an additional $ 25 million in punitive damages.

It was later revealed that Hogan’s legal expenses had been covered by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel.

Thiel has had beef with Gawker since 2007, when the site outed him as gay.

“It’s less about revenge and more about specific deterrence,” Thiel recently told The New York Times.

The good news for Gawker is that the company can now postpone paying Hogan the colossal sum that it owes him.

The bad news is – well, just about everything else.

Gawker.com confirmed moments ago that all it’s parent company will be sold to “another entity.”

The official statement adds that the sites under the Gawker Media umbrella will continue normal operations “for the foreseeable future,” but confirms that the suit has resulted in “the most significant change to Gawker’s corporate structure in its 14-year history.”

Digital publisher Ziff Davis has reportedly already placed a bid, with $ 100 million as the opening price.

It’s tough luck for Nick Denton and the other famously unscrupulous powers that be at Gawker, but as the esteemed Hulkster himself so memorably opined, “Whatcha gonna do, brother?”

Hulk Hogan Isn"t Racist, Just Stupid

A red-eyed Hulk Hogan (real name: Terry Bollea) donned his finest palm tree knit and a head hanky for a Mach 23rd appearance on The View.

The former pro wrestler won a lawsuit against Gawker Media for the 2012 publication of a sex tape in which he bedded the wife of his former best friend.

The Florida jury awarded Hogan $ 140 million in damages, which Gawker"s lawyers plan to appeal.

Hogan"s lawyer, Reno, NV-based David Houston spent the majority of the interview answering the co-hosts" questions, but Hogan himself spoke when Sunny Hostin brought up his using the racial slur, "n*****."

“It’s probably the stupidest thing I ever said,” Hogan told Hostin. “The people who know me know I’m not a racist.”

Hogan pointed out that his second marriage to Jennifer McDaniel was performed by an "Afro-American" minister, and that he attends an "Afro-American church."

Hogan also defended the WWE"s decision to terminate their professional relationship.

“Even the WWE knows I’m not a racist,” he explained. “They had to do what was best for business, for their company.”

Hogan said the reason he used the term was because he was furious about his daughter, Brooke"s relationship with a "black guy"s son" and the fact that she wasn"t taking his advice.

“I said something horrible and I will live with it forever,” he said, “but that’s not me, that’s not who I am.”

All in all, it was a pretty civilized interview.  No one got fired up, no one cut the other person off.

Well played, Hulk Hogan.

Hulk Hogan Rewarded with $25 Million MORE in Sex Tape Lawsuit

Note to Hulk Hogan: the drinks are on you.

For the next millennium.

Three days after the professional wrestling icon was rewarded $ 115 million by a jury of his peers because they determined that Gawker Media violated his privacy when it leaked portions of an old sex tape… the Hulkster was rewarded with $ 25 million more.

No, that is not a typo.

In its latest declaration, the jury held Gawker liable for $ 15 million and its publisher, Nick Denton, liable for $ 10 million in punitive damages.

As opposed to the earlier awarding of $ 115 million for compensatory damages, the punitive reward is flat out intended to punish Gawker for its invasion of Hogan’s privacy.

The massive pay-out stems from a sex tape Hogan says was made without his consent back in 2007.

It featured him going to Pound Town with Heather Clem, the wife of his good friend at the time a DJ named Bubba the Love Sponge.

Gawker then acquired the video in 2010 and released snippets on its website.

Hogan filed his lawsuit against the company in 2013, seeking $ 100 million for the private footage that featured just nine seconds of actual intercourse.

In court, Hogan testified that he was “humiliated” and left “shaken” after the release of the video.

Gawker has issued a statement in response to the latest damages, saying it is confident the verdict will be overturned on appeal.

The website maintains it had a right to post the tape initially because it was newsworthy and therefore protected by the First Amendment.

Hulk Hogan Awarded $115 MILLION in Sex Tape Lawsuit

Hey, Erin Andrews: Hulk Hogan will see your $ 55 million and raise you a cool $ 170 million more.

Just a few days after the sports reporter was awarded that massive sum because a pervert filmed her walking around naked through a peephole in her hotel room… the professional wrestling icon received an even larger amount for a different kind of nude act.

A Florida jury decreed on Friday afternoon that Hogan is owed $ 115 million – yes, that’s $ 115 MILLION – for having his privacy violated by the company Gawker.

Back in 2010, the website published clips from a 2007 sex tape that featured the former WWE champion.

They did so without his permission and Hogan has said the tape was also filmed without his knowledge.

According to Variety, the jury found that Hogan had suffered “severe emotional distress” in the last three years since the sex tape went viral.

It featured Hogan having intercourse with the then-wife of his then-best friend, a DJ named Bubba the Love Sponge.

Gawker’s attorneys unsuccessfully argued the tape was newsworthy because Hogan openly discussed his sex during various media interviews.

Hogan had sued for $ 100 million, but his peers in court decided that he was owed $ 55 million for economic injuries and $ 60 million for emotional distress.

In a statement issued Friday, Gawker Media indicated it is already contemplating an appeal.
