Orlando Shooting: 20 Killed in Massacre at Gay Nightclub

A gunman opened fire at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla., early Sunday morning, reportedly leaving 20 people dead and injuring even more.

According to police, via multiple media reports, the shooter opened fire just after 2 a.m. at Pulse, a popular gay club south of downtown.

The shooter held people hostage for several hours, and around 5 a.m., police moved in to rescue the hostages. More gunshots followed.

"There are approximately 20 people dead inside," Orlando Police Chief John Mina tragically confirmed in a press conference this morning.

"At least 42 people have been transported to various hospitals."

Mina said the shooter terrifyingly "appeared to be carrying an assault-type rifle and a handgun. He had some type of device on him."

The shooter was not from the area, the police chief said.

Mina also noted that there was no indication the shooting was related to the Saturday morning shooting death of Christina Grimmie

The Voice singer was killed one night earlier, also in Orlando, by Kevin James Loibl, who went on to take his own life after the attack.

Authorities do not yet know a motive for the club shooting.

"We consider this an act of terrorism," says FDLE Agent Danny Banks, who hinted at possible ties to radical Islam at a press conference.

"We do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings towards that, that particular ideology," Banks said, but he cautioned:

"Right now we can’t say that definitively."

"We’re still running everything around."

During the shooting, someone posted from the club"s Facebook page telling everyone to run:  "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

Our thoughts are with the victims" families.

God Isn"t Fixing This: N.Y. Daily News Cover Slams "Coward" Politicians in Wake of Massacre

The New York Daily News’ cover in the wake of yesterday’s San Bernardino, Calif., massacre is both provocative and highly political. By design.

The publication calls out those it feels could do something to end the plague of gun violence, but instead revert to useless platitudes, time after time.

The tweet of the Daily News front page, which hits newsstands in print form this morning, is already the most retweeted of 2015 for the paper.

Beneath the headline God Isn’t Fixing This, the cover reads:

“As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes.”

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and GOP presidential candidates Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Lindsey Graham all responded with “prayers.”

Four pull quotes from the Republican political leaders are plastered on the publication’s front page in eerily similar, arguably meaningless glory.

Think that means a lot to the victims of San Bernardino – 14 dead and 14 wounded – and the victims of the inevitable next mass shooting?

For their part, and by contrast Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders pointedly called for “action” to stop gun violence.

President Barack Obama, meanwhile underscored the need for stronger gun control laws in the United States after Wednesday’s mass murder.

It’s a message he has stressed repeatedly in recent years, and weeks, as he is forced to address tragedies like this with alarming frequency.

While the Daily News is obviously in the business of selling papers and ads and benefits from the viral sensation that is this cover, you tell us:

Is it a viral sensation at least in part because it says what so many people are thinking but are afraid to, and so jarringly hits the nail on the head?

AND VOTE: Time for stronger gun control measures?

Gunnar Hansen Dies; Texas Chain Saw Massacre Star Was 68

Gunnar Hansen – the actor best known for his terrifying performance as Leatherface in the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre – has passed away at the age of 68.

Gunnar Hansen

According to a statement from his family, Hansen had been battling pancreatic cancer.

Following the surprising success of his first film, Hansen went on to pay homage to the title role in several sequels, spinoffs and satires. He continued acting until the end of his life, with three films slated for release in 2016.

Born in Rekyavik in 1947, Hansen moved to America with his family when he was just 5.

He was an avid film buff from a young age and took the role of Leatherface shortly after finishing grad school with a degree in English.

Though acting was often his primary means of support, Hansen would leave Hollywood periodically throughout his life to focus on his true passion – writing.

He published a nonfiction account of his travels through the Barrier Islands in 1993, and his 2013 memoir, Chain Saw Confidential, became an instant hit with horror fans.

Hansen passed away quietly at his home in Maine, where he had spent most of the last 40 years. He is survived by his partner of 13 years, Betty Tower.
