Married at First Sight Recap: Not So Happily Ever After?

WARNING

Shade has been thrown. We repeat:

Shade. Has. Been. Thrown!

ever afters

On the series premiere of Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After, Ashley Petta went on the attack, slamming Bobby Dodd and Danielle Bergman for their seemingly utopian marriage.

Overall, the spinoff followed a trio of couples from Married at First Sight, all of whom expecting kids and all of whom have come a very long way from the last time they graced our television set.

Bobby and Danielle, for example, have been married for 6 months — and the former is three months along in her pregnancy.

Still, as difficult as it may be to believe they still haven’t had a single fight. Not one, they claim. Not even the hint of one.

This actually worried the experts, who felt that Bobby was simply doing too much in the relationship.

“He’s really taken on everything,” Danielle said.

Enter Ashley.

She hurled the aforementioned shade during the couples’ retreat after Bobby and Danielle both rated their marriage a 10.

Really, she said? Just, come on now… REALLY?!?

“There’s always room for improvement,” Ashley said. “There’s no such thing as perfect and anyone that says their relationship is perfect, I call bullsh-t.”

But what about Ashley’s own relationship with Anthony D’Amico?

This romance was proof, in Ashley’s mind, that no one has a perfect marriage.

“Watching our season was probably the worst part of our marriage,” Ashley admitted. “Anthony and I’s relationship was very rocky after the filming.”

Are they in a better place now? Yes.

But does Ashley wish her husband would communicate better? Yes.

“I don’t think Anthony’s a very good communicator,” she stated. “Sometimes I feel like if I didn’t ask him, I would never get the information.”

Finally, we close this recap with an update on Jephte Pierre and Shawniece Jackson, who are also expecting their first child…

Jephte Pierre and Shawniece Jackson

This husband and this wife confessed that, at one point, they were separated — and they still don’t wear their wedding rings, despite Shawniece being eight months pregnant.

What gives?!?

Jephte said that part of the reason they simply had to separate was because he slipped into a depression after their season aired. It got pretty serious and dire.

“It’s almost like you’re mentally drowning,” he said. “I felt weak. I felt vulnerable.”

Jephte kept this a secret from Shawniece because she has a history of miscarriages and he didn’t want to upset her, risking another lost child.

But he’s psyched to be a father and Jephte has hope for the couple’s future.

“I’m excited to be a father,” he said. “The fact that I just get a chance to be a father is probably hands-down the biggest blessing.”

Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After airs on Lifetime Tuesday nights at 10/9c.

Becca Tilley Defends JoJo Fletcher, Shades Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?

Two-time Bachelor alum Becca Tilley took to Twitter to defend JoJo Fletcher following the premiere of Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?

Why? She felt Ben and Lauren’s Bachelor spinoff portrayed JoJo, his runner-up before they got engaged, in a less than flattering light.

The Freeform reality show debuted on Tuesday and featured Lauren stressing out after producers invited her to The Bachelorette finale.

She and Ben were both asked to attend the After the Final Rose taping for Fletcher, who went on to star on The Bachelor’s sister series.

Why would that be such a big deal?

Because Lauren evidently worried that there was a spark between Ben and JoJo, and that a face-to-face meeting would rekindle the passion.

Higgins did tell both Bushnell and Fletcher he loved them late in his season, which is rare for the franchise, but was she actually concerned?

Enter Becca Tilley, The Bachelor runner-up on Chris Soules’ season who returned for a second (failed) shot at love with Ben as well.

Becca became close with JoJo, who she says has completely moved on with fiancé Jordan Rodgers, her Bachelorette final rose winner.

Tilley tweeted with an eye-rolling emoji last night:

“Pretty sure JoJo is over Ben. Pretty sure Ben is over JoJo. Pretty sure Lauren & JoJo are friends. And pretty sure producers pushed that.”

Fletcher agreed, responding in the affirmative:

“I’m pretty sure you’re right Rebecca!”

Bushnell confirmed that it’s all good now between her and Fletcher. When a Twitter user asked if the duo are still friends, she responded:

“Yes. Never let a man get in the way of a friendship.”

Don’t let a friendship get in the way of making people watch Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After online with a contrived storyline, either.

Another viewer asked after the premiere if the rest of the season was going to be all about Fletcher, and she assured the fan, “def not!”

However, the end of the episode teased Ben and Lauren heading to a potentially awkward lunch with JoJo and Jordan during their L.A. trip.

How will that turn out? Can their romance survive?!

Obviously, but we’ll be tuning in to Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After? on Freeform just like they want us to, because we can’t help it.

That’s how they get us every time.

Ben & Lauren Premiere Recap: Not Happily Ever After?

Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell were pretty much always fated to be together.

That much was made abundantly clear during their season of The Bachelor. It was one of the better seasons of the reality hit, but it was pretty predictable.

What about now, though? Can they make love last?

We’ve always wondered just how well these reality TV relationships function without the lavish trips, private concerts and just generally away from The Bachelor.

That’s probably why Freeform felt the need to make a series about it. If you still don’t know what the heck Freeform is, it’s the new name for ABC Family.

The network is struggling to find a hit, so considering The Bachelor performs well for their parent network, they probably assumed this iteration would be guaranteed ratings.

Ben and Lauren are just like the rest of us. We picked up with the two of them at the taping of The Bachelorette‘s After the Final Rose.

In an instant, it was pretty clear that Lauren was nervous about being there. This was because she and JoJo competed together on Ben’s season of The Bachelor.

Ben even told JoJo he loved her throughout filming, so there was always going to be some beef between JoJo and Lauren. It makes perfect sense that we would pick up with them at this taping.

It immediately puts a sense of jeopardy on the relationship. Lauren feels like Ben could just easily ditch her and move on to JoJo.

Ben and Lauren had their first argument of the night, but Ben did admit they probably should not have attended the taping. There’s a great chance that Ben did not even want to go at all.

Ben then revealed to Lauren that he wanted her to be happy, but taking her within 15 meters of JoJo Fletcher was most definitely not the best way to show that.

There is always going to be tension with JoJo. Poor Lauren probably squeals every time she reads reports of JoJo Fletcher breaking up with Jordan Rodgers.

For all we know, the couple could be on a strict itinerary to get content for the show. That’s sort of what happens in reality TV, but I guess they knew what they were signing up for before signing on the dotted line.

We were treated to a flashback of the couple being invited on the show with JoJo. Lauren knew immediately that there was something amiss.

It’s hard to imagine that the scene was genuinely filmed one month before, either. Flashbacks in reality TV makes them seem even more fake, so they’re best ditching them.

Poor Lauren could not escape JoJo and that’s probably because the couple could binged The Bachelorette. It’s all pretty ridiculous.

Lauren made the observation that JoJo has a clear type of men. They also shaded some of the contestants. Don’t they realize that they are being filmed?

Lauren reeled in Haley and Emily Ferguson for some advice about going to the After the Final Rose taping. They were very neutral about the whole thing, but said that if she went, it would prove they have all moved on.

The ladies took a trip to the toilet store and went completely crazy. They were running around the store like children. It was actually pretty obnoxious.

All of the drama from the day resulted in the women trying to install a new toilet in the bathroom, but Ben swooped in to save the day.

Later, Ben and Lauren had yet another bust up when JoJo called, inviting he and Lauren to lunch with her and Jordan.

Lauren went off on one because she was not consulted before he made the decision. To be fair to the dude, he was sort of put on the spot by JoJo.

We then returned to the scene that opened the show, with the couple on After the Final Rose. Ben gave his speech to JoJo and it Lauren was blatantly pissed off about the whole thing.

If we want to see what went down on the lunch date, we have to tune in to Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After? Season 1 Episode 2, but we get the feeling that a lot of viewers will not return.

As a standalone episode with some more footage would probably have had a bigger impact with viewers, but keeping up with the bickering on a weekly basis will probably be cumbersome for most.

They are no Sam and Ronnie from Jersey Shore
