Emma Stone Unseats Jennifer Lawrence as Highest Paid Actress!

Talking about the highest paid actors and actresses in Hollywood is a bit like debating the superiority of Michael Jordan over LeBron James.

We’re talking about people who are so very much at the top of their game that us peasants here on the ground look like ants to them.

Still, it makes for interesting conversation, particularly when you’re talking about the women of Hollywood, who continue to fight tooth and nail for income equality.

Each year, Forbes releases its list of the highest paid actresses, and the names at the top usually remain relatively unchanged.

That’s not terribly surprising, as Hollywood actresses are given a narrow window of opportunity in which to ply their trade and the top earners tend to come from a very small pool of a talent.

As a result, there are no women of color and no one over the age of 50 on this year’s top ten list.

It’s a sad reminder of the inequality in the American film industry and the ways in which disproportionately affects women.

But while things mostly remained the same as they ever were, there was one major change on this year’s list:

With $ 26 million in earnings over the past 12 months, Emma Stone has dethroned reigning queen Jennifer Lawrence as this year’s highest-paid actress.

Most of that sum comes from Stone’s La La Land payday.

Well-earned, as Stone’s starpower is widely credited with helping the unlikely smash top $ 400 million at the box office.

Lawrence dropped to the number three spot behind Jennifer Aniston ($ 25.5 million) this year, but she still pulled in an astonishing $ 24 million.

Both actresses have spoken out about pay inequality in Hollywood, with Stone recently revealing that she’s frequently dealt with studio heads so stubborn that they agree to pay her what’s she’s worth only after her male co-stars agreed make concessions.

“In my career so far, I’ve needed my male co-stars to take a pay cut so that I may have parity with them,” Stone said in a recent interview.

“And that’s something they do for me because they feel it’s what’s right and fair. That’s something that’s also not discussed, necessarily: that our getting equal pay is going to require people to selflessly say, ‘That’s what’s fair.’”

The rest of the list shakes out like this:

4. Melissa McCarthy—$ 18 million; 5. Mila Kunis—$ 15.5 million; 6. Emma Watson—$ 14; 7. million Charlize Theron—$ 14 million; 8. Cate Blanchett—$ 12 million; 9. Julia Roberts—$ 12 million; 10. Amy Adams—$ 11.5 million

Impressively, none of the top-earning females leaned on high-profile comic book properties or existing cinematic universes to make the list.

As for the lack of diversity, we can only hope that Hollywood will remedy the situation going forward.

If the 2017 Academy Awards taught us anything, it’s that too often, real change only occurs when those who recognize injustice band together to make their voices heard.

Maryam Mirzakhani, First Woman to Win Math’s Highest Honor, Dies At 40

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian who became the first woman to win math’s most prestigious prize, died Saturday after a four-year battle with breast cancer.

She was 40 years old.

In 2014, Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal, which is commonly referred to as the “Nobel Prize for Mathematics” in order for those outside of the industry to fully grasp its importance.

It’s only given out once every four years and Mirzakhani earned the distinction for her work on dynamical systems and complex geometry.

Along with being the first female, she was also the first Iranian to garner the medal, which was created in 1936.

Born in Tehran, Mirzakhani came to the United States in order to attend graduate school at Harvard University.

She started working as a professor at Stanford University in 2008 and the school confirmed her passing on Saturday via its website.

“Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne in a statement, adding:

“Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path.

“Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world.”

For the final four years of her life, Mirzakhani battle breast cancer, which eventually spread to her bone marrow.

In response to her passing, Iranian-American scientist Firouz Naderi shared his grief on Instagram, writing the following on Instagram:

“A light was turned off today… It breaks my heart.”

He later emphasized that Mirzakhani was a “genius, but also a daughter, a mother and a wife.”

Mirzakhani once famous said that mathematics made her feel like a detective.

“It is fun – it’s like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case,” she said after winning the Fields Medal, according to NPR.

“I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path.”

May she rest in peace.

Scarlett Johansson Named Highest Grossing Actress in History, But Still Disappointed

Scarlett Johansson just scored a major milestone in her career, but the achievement is bittersweet.

The actress was recently named the highest grossing actress in history by Box Office Mojo.

However, the Avengers star was the only woman to come in the top 10, and she finds the lack of her female peers on the list “disappointing.”

“It’s exciting to be the only woman in the category,” Johansson told Extra.

“It is kind of disappointing, actually, to be the only woman in this category. That was a little bit of a surprise to me,” she explained.

Even more surprising is that only one other woman, Cameron Diaz, made the top 20 on the list.

Earlier this month, Johansson spoke to Cosmopolitan about the gender pay gap in Hollywood.

“There’s something icky about me having that conversation unless it applies to a greater whole,” she said.

“I am very fortunate, I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage…

“I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious.

“It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general.”

Johansson joins a number of celebrities, including Patricia Arquette, Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence who have expressed chagrin at the Hollywood double standard when it comes to salary.

Coming in at number one on the Box Office Mojo list is Harrison Ford, followed by Samuel L. Jackson and Morgan Freeman.

35 Highest Paid TV Stars of 2015: You Won"t Believe Who"s #1!

These days, there are more shows than you can even count.

With all the different networks and means of binging on TV, it"s an embarrassment of riches for the fans … and for the actors and actresses.

Just as the sheer number of television programs grows by the year, the bank accounts of the stars are growing too. By, like, a lot.

We pay a pretty penny for our entertainment, apparently. Or many pennies. Millions upon millions of them if you want to get technical.

Okay, so technically advertisers and networks pay those pennies, but who"s paying the networks and buying the products, you know?

When the principal cast of The Big Bang Theory negotiated $ 1 million per episode in the not so distant past, that dominated headlines.

And rightfully so. But remarkably enough, Kaley, Johnny and Jim didn"t even top the list of the 35 highest paid TV stars of 2015.

Who does? Proceed to find out. It"s a shocker, for sure …

1. Tatiana Maslany

Tatiana maslany at the emmys

Tatiana Maslany plays something like 7? 8? characters on Orphan Black and only makes $ 50,000 per episode. She should get at least $ 50,000 per character (because she’s effing amazing!) but we’re pretty sure her half a million a season paycheck doesn’t hurt her feels.

2. Sharon Osbourne

Sharon osbourne on the talk

Sharon Osbourne raked in $ 1 million for The Talk. That’s a lot, for sure, and it doesn’t take into account any money she might bring in from appearances and judging stints on other shows.

3. Keri Russell

Star of The Americans, Keri Russell, banked a cool $ 100,000 per episode for the spy drama. In a 13-episode season, that brought her a cool $ 1.3 million a year.

4. Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, and Lea Michele

Before Glee ended, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, and Lea Michele were each bringing home $ 1.6 million a season. That’s $ 80,000 an episode for those of you who hate math.

5. Peter Dinklage

Tyrion Lannister, aka Peter Dinklage, has the highest salary of any Game of Thrones cast member. He’s raking in $ 150,000 an episode for a total of $ 1.9 million a season. If he’s the next Jon Snow, (read: killed off) maybe this is why.

6. Kerry Washington

Scandal’s Kerry Washington is the ONLY cast member to make this list. In 2015, she was paid $ 80,000 an episode (a straight $ 2 million) to bring Olivia Pope to life.
