Monty Hall Dies; Iconic Game Show Host Was 96
Monty Hall, the legendary television personality best known for hosting Let’s Make a Deal on CBS, died Saturday of heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills.
He was 96 years old.
The New York Times first confirmed this sad piece ofnews.
Hall co-created the aforementioned hit game show and launched it as the emcee in 1963.
At the time of its premiere, Let’s Make a Deal helped anchor CBS’ daytime lineup; it eventually moved to primetime in 1968.
Hall had hosted a number of programs prior to striking it big with this series… which remains on the air today (Wayne Brady is host) and which encourages audience members to dress up in outlandish costumes while they barter for the best prize possible.
A syndicated version of Let’s Make a Deal aired on and off throughout the 1970s and 80s, prior to returning to NBC for a brief run from 1990-1991.
The show was then revived with Brady in 2009, with Hall putting in occasional guest appearances
Hall received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1973.
As a Canadian native, he was named to the Order of Canada in 1988.
Hall is survived by three children: actress Joanna Gleason; TV executive Sharon Hall; and TV producer Richard Hall; in addition to a brother and five grandchildren.
His wife Marilyn passed away in June.
Scroll down to read the full CBS statement about Hall’s life and death…
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Monty Hall, a television legend who hosted a show and created a format that has entertained audiences for more than 50 years,
Monty’s infectious enthusiasm, humor and warmth were a winning combination that was evident to everyone he encountered, whether returning to make appearances on the current version of Let’s Make a Deal, or gracing us with his presence at a photo shoot celebrating CBS Daytime earlier this year.
On screen, Monty made the ‘Big Deals,’ but in the game of life, he himself was one.
Our hearts go out to his children, his entire family and friends.
The statement was released by Angelica McDaniel, CBS’ executive VP of daytime programs and syndicated program development.
May Monty Hall rest in peace.

Dick Gregory Dies; Iconic Comedian Was 84 Years Old
Dick Gregory, a legendary comic who was also well known for his work as a civil rights activist, died on Saturday in Washington D.C.
He was 84 years old.
Gregory had recently rescheduled an event in Atlanta due to a hospitalization, although the cause of his illness and his subsequent passing is unknown at this time.
“The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love, and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time,” wrote son Christian Gregory on social media, adding:
“More details will be released over the next few days.”
While serving as a member of the military in the 1950s, Gregory started his career as a stand-up comedian.
He didn’t specialize in harmless, observational humor, however. Quite the opposite.
Gregory satirized segregation and racial injustice in his acts; he was arrested several times in the 1960s for joining civil rights rallies.
In 1961, he rose to prominence as the first black performer to perform at a white club after Hugh Hefner gave him a regular gig at the Playboy Club in Chicago.
He earned rave reviews at the time and eventually signed a three-year contract to serve as a headliner at the establishment.
Always with an eye on societal issues greater than his own career, Gregory was once invited to perform on The Tonight Show in the days of Jack Paar…
… refused unless he was able to have a seat on the couch.
“He taught us how to laugh,” wrote Reverend Jesse Jackson upon learning of Gregory’s passing. “He taught us how to fight. He taught us how to live.
“Dick Gregory was committed to justice.I miss him already. #RIP.”
A motivational speaker later in life, Gregory wrote several books, including “Murder in Memphis,” which analyzed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
Also a writer – particularly respected for the documentary “Joe Louis: America’s Hero… Betrayed” – Gregory was ranked by Comedy Central as the 82nd best stand-up comic in history.
“Dick Gregory lived an amazing, revolutionary life. A groundbreaker in comedy and a voice for justice,” John Legend Tweeted as a tribute to the icon, while DL Hughley added:
“Heaven just got funnier.”
We send our condolences to the loved ones of Dick Gregory.
May he rest in peace.

Judge Wapner Dies; Iconic People’s Court Host Was 97
More sad news today out of the television world.
A few hours after we learned that Bill Paxton died at the age of 61, due to complications after heart surgery, TMZ is reporting that Jospeh Wapner has also passed away.
The retired judge rose to surprise TV stardom as the host of The People’s Court.
He was 97 years old.
Long before Judge Judy and many others in this profession used the small screen to take their career to a new and famous level, Judge Wapner sat on the bench in September of 1981 at the front of The People Court.
In many ways, it was the first reality show of all-time.
And Wapner earned instant fandom as its clear-cut star.
Opinionated, intelligent, affable and humorous, Wapner led the series for 12 years and 2,484 total episodes.
He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his work in the entertainment space.
The program itself was parodied on Saturday Night Live.
In Rain Man, Dustin Hoffman was often quoted as his character of Raymond for saying there were only “three minutes to Wapner,” an expression that took on a life of its own for years.
Prior to signing on as a television judge, Wapner served as an L.A. County Superior Court judge for over two decades.
According to TMZ insiders, he was hospitalized last week after suffering a few breathing problems.
The condition sadly grew worsen, prompting a transfer to his home in Los Angeles on Friday, February 24, at which time Wapner was placed hospice care.
He passed away on Sunday morning.
After The People’s Court was canceled in 1993, it aired in syndication until it was revived for a second incarnation in September 1997.
For this version, former attorney and mayor of New York Ed Koch replaced Wapner for two seasons and was later succeeded by Judge Jerry Sheindlin and Florida State Circuit Court Judge Marilyn Milian, the latter of whom has since become the show’s longest-reigning arbiter.
Wapner is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mickey Wapner, and their three children.
May he rest in peace.

George Michael Dies; Iconic Singer Was 53
George Michael, the influential British singer and cultural icon, suddenly passed away over the Christmas holiday, his publicist confirms.
He was 53.
Michael’s London-based publicist, Connie Filippello, issued a brief statement to the BBC, the first publication to report Michael’s death.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.”
“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
The music great’s cause of death was heart failure, according to multiple media reports, though this has yet to be independently confirmed.
It is not clear when exactly Michael passed away.
Immediately, his maby fans, family and friends reacted to the latest stunning celebrity death of 2016, a year that cannot end fast enough.
“I am in deep shock,” Elton John wrote on Instagram. “I have lost a beloved friend, the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.”
“My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”
Michael’s career began back in the ’80s, both as the frontman for the British teen idols Wham! and then as a hugely successful solo artist.
He leaves a legacy of tremendous musical achievements, and also of well-documented professional struggles and personal scandals.
Michael’s first solo album, 1987’s Faith, was a cultural milestone thanks to huge hits in the title track, “I Want Your Sex,” “Father Figure” and more.
He became the first Caucasian artist to reach the top position on Billboard’s R&B chart, and he remained a fixture on the charts for years.
Faith’s follow-up albums, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, did not match his debut, but produced considerable hits and sales.
In 2004, the Radio Academy declared that Michael’s music had been played on British radio more than that of any artist from 1984-2004.
Michael’s career would be overshadowed by his tabloid exploits, and questions of the singer’s sexual orientation came to the fore in 1998.
That year, he was arrested for lewd behavior after revealing himself to a man, who turned out to be a police officer, in a public restroom.
Michael later became open about his homosexuality.
He was arrested several additional times between 2006-2010 for possession of drugs and driving under the influence, and battled health issues.
We will have more on Michael’s tragic passing as information becomes available, and on the music world’s reaction to the loss of a legend.
Our thoughts are with the singer’s family and friends.
