Katherine Heigl Apologizes After Controversial Graveyard Photoshoot
Katherine Heigl made a mistake. And, unlike many celebrities who have been called out for mistakes, she"s not dismissing criticism as "haters" and "trolls."
She"s owned her error and apologized, thanking her fans for what they said.
This is the way to do it, folks. Take a look:
Katherine Heigl shared her post-baby body just months ago and earned praise.
But when she shared humorous photos of various tombstones and other grave markers from a trip to a cemetary, fans were quick to point out that making light of the dead was not in great taste.
See, she had posed alongside these grave markers and shared the images on social media, along with funny captions.
(Remember, some of those people probably have real, living descendants who remember them and won"t see the humor in your posts)
So Heigl took to Instagram video to apologise.
"Hey everybody," Heigl says. "So I’m in the car driving home from my family time in Buffalo."
It seems like a shame to go to Buffalo in the summer and miss the city"s legendary snow, but oh well.
Heigl continues, saying: "and I noticed on my Instagram page that the post I posted earlier was getting a lot of reaction."
Instead of turning off comments or doubling down, as so many would have done, she listened.
Heigl kept an open mind "and I realized you guys are right and that was not appropriate and was disrespectful and I’ve taken it down."
It"s true! The only remainder of the humorous posts is a video of her husband, Josh Kelley, on his page as he pretends to walk hand-in-hand with a ghost.
(Some might consider it irreverent, but it"s not about any specific tombstones, so it"s fine)
The actress then explains, for anyone who missed the discourse, why her previous posts were insensitive.
"But somebody commented," Heigl says. "And … was kind of just saying they didn’t think it was an appropriate thing to do."
That person (whose name she can"t remember at the moment) also guessed her motive.
Heigl says that this commenter called her out, but knew "that I was probably trying to make a hard moment lighthearted and that’s exactly what I was doing."
Graveyards can be emotionally challenging to visit.
On top of the more obvious grief, sometimes seeing a grave for the first time can make something much more real than it is.
It definitely makes sense that she was tried to lighten her own mood.
"It’s kind of a heavy thing to go and visit my loved ones’ graves," Heigl explains. "And I decided to try to find some moments of levity and humor and didn’t realize how inappropriate I was being."
Really, the only inappropriate part was putting that levity on Instagram.
"So I deeply apologize," Heigl continues. "And I thank you guys for understanding that sometimes I don’t think things through clearly enough."
That can happen to any one of us, any day of the week. Most of us just don"t have millions of fans who will instantly see our mistakes.
Heigl then thanks her fans: "And I am grateful for your input and for kind of giving me a head’s up when I’m maybe going too far."
That is such a good response.
"And thank you," Heigl adds. "For forgiving me."
Heigl continues her message in a second video, which we merged with the first in this post for your convenience.
"Next time," Heigl says. "I will be more thoughtful about other people’s feelings and not just my own."
It"s great to look after your own feelings! But while social media is wonderful, some things are just a little too insensitive to share.
"Anyway," Heigl continues. "I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday."
She addresses this with the perfect attitude — a combination of friendliness and sincerety.
Heigl adds: "and again, thank you for kind of stepping up and saying something."
It can be so easy, she knows, to be obsequious on social media when speaking to celebrities.
Heigl concludes: "and bringing something to my awareness that needed to be brought."
In case you"re wondering why Heigl is earning praise for her simple apology, you have to remember that the celebrity bubble tends to reinforce the idea that there are people who just want to tear them down.
When Khloe Kardashian feels outraged when fans give her advice, that"s part of it.
Some celebs will get defensive and double down on their negative actions or statements.
We could easily imagine someone posting funny photos from a cemetary and then responding to criticism with "What? Are we not allowed to take silly pictures with the Great Pyramids? They"re giant tombs!!" or something like that.
While celebrities are right to ignore trolls, not every criticism comes from a "hater."
Heigl should be commended for knowing how to parse the difference and read comments with an open mind.
Also? Can we just add that those glasses are such a great look on her.

After the shock over the news that Chris Pratt and Anna Faris had split, people started to wonder who would be next to date the comedic actor and totaly Hollywood studmuffin.
Despite rumors, he’s not dating Olivia Munn. But now we know who he’s seeing.
This gorgeous but much younger woman is Katherine Schwarzenegger.
TMZ spotted Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger on a picnic date in Santa Barbara.
Per their report, Chris picked up Katherine from her home and then drove her up the coast.
As various outlets have noted, Chris has been known to flirt from time to time.
But this is the first actual date that anyone has seen him on since his split from Anna. So it’s no surprise that he went above and beyond.
We can only imagine what a fun, and funny, date the two of them had.
Katherine has some very obvious Hollywood ties, thanks to her father, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But he’s honestly not her most famous relation.
Through her mother, broadcast journalist Maria Shriver, she is the great-niece of John F. Kennedy.
Katherine does not actually work as an actress or even directly as a politician.
Instead, she is an author, an interior designer, a lifestyle blogger, and an animal welfare activist.
Notably, she is 28 years old — ten years younger than Pratt, who is 38.
But while 10 years is kind of a lot of age difference for a couple, they’re both very much adults. It’s not a big deal.
By all accounts, it sounds like Chris and Katherine enjoyed their picnic lunch.
It’s unclear how much they’ve spoken before this, but the general consensus seems to be that the two are still getting to know one another.
That shoulsn’t be difficult. They’re both beautiful and charming people.
But it may be a little strange for Chris Pratt to get back into the dating game after so many years of marriage.
We wouldn’t be surprised if they take things slow, even if they end up being a long-term couple.
Another potential difference will be the dynamic — assuming that Chris and Katherine continue dating and don’t go their separate ways.
For years, Chris Pratt was mostly just “Anna Faris’ husband.” People knew him as “that guy from Parks and Recreation.”
(Where, for the record, he was hilarious, both in delivering scripted lines and in improvising some truly brilliant jokes)
Anna was the big name.
Then, Chris was cast as Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy.
To take on the roll, he transformed his body from its soft form into the hardened hunk we’ve all seen in three Marvel bluckbusters.
Suddenly, he was the big time movie star. Anna Faris was his wife.
When the two of them split, many joked on social media that this was precisely why they never wanted their boyfriends or husbands to “get hot.”
But Katherine and Chris would have this dynamic — her from a famous family and him as an action movie star — from the beginning.
That might help their stability in a relationship, in the long run.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
Right now they’re just dating as the world braces itself for the premiere of Chris’ newest film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Katherine Jackson: Held Against Her Will in Hotel by Greedy Relatives!?
For most people, going out to grab a bite of cheap food late at night is a regular habit.
When 87-year-old Katherine Jackson was spotted doing it, however, it was nothing short of alarming.
TMZ reports that the matriarch was spotted at a West Hollywood diner at 11pm on Wednesday night.
She was seen in the company of one bodyguard and two women.
That’s a long drive from her Calabasas home, particularly considering that she’s 87 years old and said to be fond of living at her home and having meals prepared by her personal chef.
She’s reportedly living in a hotel near her Calabasas home.
And apparently some family members worry that this is all part of a power struggle for control over Katherine herself … and, therefore, over the family’s considerable fortune.
It’s horrible to think of what people will do to obtain access to and control over someone else’s money.
Unlike a lot of crime dramas would have us believe, it’s very rarely about murder.
In fact, when there’s an ironclad will in place, sometimes the worst thing for someone taking advantage of an elderly relative would be their death.
Then they’d be left with nothing but their own inheritance.
But by accessing the family fortune directly — gaining access to it with access to Katherine herself — they could have an unlimited money supply.
Until Katherine has enough, that is.
There may be good reason to worry about Katherine Jackson’s well-being.
In addition to accusing her nephew and former driver, Trent, of emotional abuse, Katherine is said to have feared for her physical safety in retaliation for finally parting ways with him.
But even out of Trent’s clutches, there may be others who are looking to take advantage of her and in particular to keep her away from her grandchildren.
She’s been away from grandson Blanket so much recently that his sister Paris is reportedly concerned.
It may be that other Jackson relatives are taking her under their proverbial wings and literal influence.
They could be keeping her isolated and in some ways dependent on her.
An 11pm visit to a diner isn’t a standard pit-stop for Katherine, but it’s possible that she isn’t calling the shots in her life anymore.
But before we ring any alarm bells, we need to look at other possible explanations.
First of all, 87-year-olds can absolutely stay up until midnight or later.
They can also have food cravings — and even women who like formal meals might get the occasional hankering for something simple and greasy.
The guard with her might be entirely her doing.
After all, she’s a wealthy woman and she at one point stated that she was afraid that Trent would come after her.
A bodyguard would help with that.
Trent had complete access to her house and she might very realistically fear that he could still get in. She might also worry that he’s left monitoring devices behind.
Sounds like a great reason to stay somewhere else to us.
Ultimately, we’ll see, and just because we can think of alternative theories doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be concerned for Katherine Jackson’s well-being.
Anybody who loves their grandmother wouldn’t want to think of her in this kind of situation.

Katherine Berman: Wife of ESPN"s Chris Berman Killed in Accident
Katherine Berman, the wife of legendary ESPN commentator Chris Berman, has been killed in a car accident near the couple’s home in Connecticut.
According to police reports, Katherine’s car slammed into another vehicle, killing both drivers.
The cause of the crash is still unknown.
Witnesses say Berman’s 2003 Lexus struck the back of a Ford Escape, causing her to veer off the road and into a body of water, where her vehicle promptly overturned.
The other driver, an 87-year-old man named Edward Bertulis, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died moments later.
The crash reportedly took place around 2:15 pm on Tuesday in the town of Woodbury.
According to TMS Chris Berman was at a Giants vs. Mets game at Citi Field at the time.
He was informed of the crash by NYPD officers.
Chris and Katherine have been married since 1983 and have two children together.
Details are scarce at present, but moments ago, ESPN President John Skipper publicly offered his condolences to the Berman family:
“This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend,” Skipper said in a statement.
“Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: he has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years. We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is to give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour.”
He concluded:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Meredith, Doug and the entire family.”
For decades, Berman has been one of ESPN’s most beloved personalities.
Specializing in football and baseball coverage, Chris Berman’s player nicknames and quirky catchphrases helped set the tone during the network’s early days and have endured him to millions of sports fans.
Condolences began to pour in from all corners of social media within minutes of the news of Katherine’s untimely death.
Our thoughts go out to the Berman family during this incredibly difficult time.
