Della Reese Dies; Touched By an Angel Star Was 86
Singer, songwriter, and Touched By An Angel star Della Reese has passed away at 86.
As she is mourned by her friends and family, she’s also remembered by fans for her many contributions.
And her former costar broke the news.
Actress Roma Downey, who spent years as Della’s costar, took to Instagram to share the following difficult message:
“On behalf of her husband, Franklin Lett, and all her friends and family, I share with you the news that our beloved Della Reese has passed away peacefully at her California home surrounded by love.”
Della’s life was full and she played many roles in many lives.
“She was an incredible Wife, Mother, Grandmother, friend, and Pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer.”
When a celebrity passes, their loss is felt by their loved ones as well as by countless fans. Roma was sure to acknowledge that.
“Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people.”
That’s a powerful contribution to the world.
The tribute message continues:
“She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years on Touched By An Angel.”
And it is from Touched By An Angel that most people recognize both actresses.
“I know heaven has a brand new angel this day.”
That’s not really standard Christian theology but it’s a common expression.
“Della Reese will be forever in our hearts. Rest In Peace, sweet angel. We love you.”
That thoughtful message was followed by nine emojis of a dove in flight.
Very tasteful.
When people mention Della Reese’s role as an award-winning singer and song-writer, it’s important that we remember that this was a woman of many talents.
She didn’t sing from just one or two musical genres.
She was a nightclub singer. She was a jazz singer. She was a gospel singer. And she was also a pop singer.
And, again, she was also an actress and a pastor on top of all of that.
Oh, and a talk show host.
She had her own talk show series that had nearly 200 episodes.
Della Reese is survived by her children: Deloreese, James, Franklin, and Dominique, and also by her husband, Franklin Lett.
She’s a music legend and star of television and film.
She was also a pillar of her religious community. Many consider serving as a pastor to be life’s highest calling.
Everyone whose life she touched will miss her.

Reese Witherspoon: I Was Sexually Assaulted By a Director at 16
If there is any silver lining at all to the horrifying reports of sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein over the course of decades, it is that the discussion and pressure might make it easier for more women — and men — to come forward with their own grim stories of sexual harassment and assault.
If you’ve been on Twitter or Facebook for the last few days, you’ve probably seen a solid chunk of your female acquaintances write “Me Too.” Many people, celebrities included, are speaking out — even if they’re not naming names.
Reese Witherspoon is revealing her own story, of when she was sexually assaulted by a director when she was just 16.
We’ve seen women from all walks of life post “Me Too,” whether as part of the hashtag on Twitter or in a simple post on Facebook.
These are women from rural areas and from major cities. Women young and old. Women with top-notch careers and women who were stay-at-home moms.
Not all shared more than “me too.”
While it may matter to them and the course of their lives whether their experiences are with sexual harassment or with sexual assault, the point of the “me too” posts was to show other women that they’re not alone and to show men that, yes, literally everyone knows women who have been through this.
Many, many women.
However, some women are telling their stories. Whether naming names or not, they’re talking about the sorts of gendered harassment and violence they’ve experienced during their lives.
Both close calls and times when they didn’t escape.
Now Reese Witherspoon is adding her voice to the chorus.
Last night, Reese Witherspoon gave a speech at the Elle Women in Hollywood event sponsored by Calvin Klein and L’Oréal Paris.
As reported by People, Reese spoke about her first sexual assault — and revealed that it was sadly not her last.
“This has been a really hard week for women in Hollywood, for women all over the world, and a lot of situations and a lot of industries are forced to remember and relive a lot of ugly truths.”
Remember, this discussion might be good for women in the long run, but for survivors, it also means reliving their trauma.
If you’ve never had a traumatic flashback, think of those times when you relive an awkward or humiliating moment that you had as a child. You cringe, right?
Now imagine that instead of an embarrassing moment that only you remember, it’s a vivid recollection of the worst moments of your life.
“I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly and I find it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that I’ve been having about anxiety, honest, the guilt for not speaking up earlier.”
Those sound like classic PTSD symptoms.
And Reese tells you exactly why:
“[I feel] true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment.”
Horrible. The assault itself, and the cover-up that ensued.
“And I wish that I could tell you that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly it wasn’t. I’ve had multiple experiences of harassment and sexual assault and I don’t speak about them very often.”
We’ve heard it said, by survivors, that they feared that they were more likely to be assaulted again. Because predators might realize that they were victims before, but also because their bodies freeze up as a defense mechanism.
Reese Witherspoon goes on to explain why she felt inspired to speak up.
“But after hearing all the stories these past few days and hearing these brave women speak up tonight about things that we’re kind of told to sweep under the rug and not to talk about, it’s made me want to speak up and speak up loudly because I actually felt less alone this week than I have ever felt in my entire career.”
That is inspiring but sad at the same time.
“I have just spoken to so many actresses and writers, particularly women, who have had similar experiences and many of them have bravely gone public with their stories. That truth is very encouraging to me and everyone out there in the world because you can only heal by telling the truth.”
Just as Evan Rachel Wood says, there is strength in numbers, and women know that.
“I feel really, really encouraged that there will be a new normal. For the young women in this room, life is going to be different because we’re with you, we have your back and it makes me feel better. It makes me so sad to talk about these issues, but I would be remiss not to.”
We absolutely hope that Reese Witherspoon’s optimism about a changing culture will be justified.
We’re not going to hold our breath for Harvey Weinstein to face justice. Sure he got fired from his own company, but that’s just business — not justice.
The Motion Picture Academy may have booted him out, but they still have Bill Cosby and Woody Allen in their ranks. Clearly, people in power aren’t going to make changes unless they’re forced to do so.
There are plenty of predators in Hollywood and elsewhere who are happy to condemn Weinstein … and are just waiting for the public attention to die down.
But every moment of even incremental change is a step towards a better world. Reese Witherspoon, sharing her story, is part of that.

Chelsea Handler Shares NUDE SELFIE for Reese Witherspoon"s Birthday!
Clearly, Chelsea Handler and Reese Witherspoon are very special friends.
Reese turned 40 yesterday, and instead of treating her to a boring old mani-pedi or a Red Lobster gift card, Chelsea Handler gave the gift of nudity.
Lucky for us, Reese was not the only one to benefit from Chelsea’s generosity, because the comic shared the NSFW pic to Instagram for all the world to ogle.
“Happy birthday @reesewitherspoon,” she wrote in the caption.
As we can see, she looks a tad awkward contorting her body to conceal all the scandalous bits and pieces while trying to hold the phone steady, but clearly she opted against using black censor bars a la Kim Kardashian.
Nude selfies are all the rage these days after Kim’s nelfie went viral earlier this month and inspired a barrage of imitators.
However, this is far from the first time Chelsea has exposed herself on Instagram.
Back in 2014, she made headlines by having her photo banned from the site after sharing a pic of herself topless on horseback to mock a similar photo of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Since then, we’ve seen a whole lotta Chelsea’s boobs, butt and even the surrounding areas of her lady garden, but this is the first time she’s gone topless and bottomless simultaneously.
To be fair, she’s not entirely nude. The black knee-high socks prove that she does maintain a hair of modesty.
So far, Reese hasn’t responded to her friend’s birthday wishes – although she did thank many other famous pals who sent birthday love, including Sofia Vergara, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Julianne Moore.
We’re hoping she’s just gearing up and planning a whopper of a reply. One does not simply send a run-of-the-mill thank you card in exchange for a naked birthday selfie.

Reese Witherspoon Star-Studded 40th Birthday: Taylor Swift Performs!
While Rob Kardashian celebrated his birthday this weekend with an intimate family dinner, Reese Witherspoon went for the all-out major rager with a host of A-list celebrity guests.
Reese rang in her 40th birthday in style at the swanky Warwick lounge in Hollywood and was accompanied by famous friends like Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux, Courteney Cox, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Downey Jr., Isla Fisher, Conan O’Brien, Chris Martin, Chelsea Handler and Tobey Maguire.
Oh, and Witherspoon was also treated to a special birthday concert by a little known artist called Taylor Swift, who performed a stripped-down, acoustic version of “Shake It Off.”
The birthday girl rocked a sparkly, long-sleeved mini dress and looked positively glowing.
Kate Hudson shared this fun photo collage of the bash.
“When you take a shit load of pictures and you still don’t have it perfect so you go for the ole collage post…. Happy Birthday gorgeous girl @reesewitherspoon !!! Love you,” she wrote in the caption.
The Almost Famous actress included the hashtags #TequillaFirst #PostingLater #SaturdayNight #ImSoExcitedToGetIntoBedIDontEvenKnowWhatToDoWithMyself #NotWashingMyFace #GoodNight
Sounds like tequila kicked her butt that evening. I think we’ve all been there.
As part of the fun, Reese took the stage and sang “Sweet Home Alabama” with Keith Urban on guitar, an homage to her 2002 hit movie with the same name.
Oddly, we did not see Reese’s husband Jim Toth – could those divorce rumors that surfaced back in December be true?
Perhaps he was just hiding from the cameras. Whatever the case, it looks like Reese had an unbelievable birthday!

Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth: Divorce on the Way?!
Rumors that Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth are headed for divorce have been circulating for months, but now, Star magazine is reporting that it’s virtually a done deal – and the whole thing may cost the Oscar-winning actress a pretty penny.
Yes, Reese is one of Hollywood’s highest-paid stars and the tabloid claims that she and Toth are no longer living together and will soon divide up $ 135 million in assets.
Apparently, the main cause of Witherspoon and Toth’s marital strife is their shared love of booze.
You may remember the video of a drunk Witherspoon standing by her man after a run-in with police in 2013.
Rumors of Reese day drinking and showing getting heavily intoxicated in public surfaced several times in the months that followed, but now, sources say the 39-year-old mother of three has cooled it on the sauce – while Toth is still hitting the bottle hard.
“Reese says that Jim is not the same man that she married,” says one insider.
Sources claim Witherspoon and Toth are already living separate lives, but Reese is putting off filing for divorce for two reasons:
- She’s reportedly “mortified” by the idea of being divorced twice before the age of 40.
- She knows Toth will walk away with a hefty chunk of her 9-figure fortune.
Look at this way Reese – you’re rich, hot, and the whole world knows you’re loyal to the point of yelling at cops in your husband’s defense. We’re sure you’ll have no problem finding a new dude to help you enjoy your fortune.
