Nathan Barksdale Dies; Drug Kingpin and Inspiration For The Wire Was 54

Nathan Barksdale – the Baltimore drug kingpin who served as the inspiration for Avon Barksdale and several other characters in the acclaimed HBO series The Wire – has passed away.

He was 54 years old.

While running his city’s largest heroin distribution ring in the 1980s, Barksdale was shot more than 20 times and had to have his right leg amputated below the knee.

Shortly thereafter, he was arrested on assault charges and sentenced to 15 years behind bars.

It was during his trial that Barksdale first caught the attention of Baltimore Sun reported David Simon, who went to create The Wire.

After qualifying for early release in 1994, Barksdale became a spokesman the anti-violence initiative Safe Streets.

He also worked closely with the cast and production crew of The Wire in helping to bring the story of Baltimore’s rampant drug and violent crime problems to the screen.

Barksdale was even the subject of a documentary about his life and rehabilitation that was released at the height of the show’s popularity.

“In real life he was one of the most notorious and resilient gangster drug kingpins Baltimore has ever seen,” says the film’s narrator at one point. “He was a magnet for violence.”

Sadly – yet somewhat appropriately – Barksdale was ensnared in a DEA wiretap in 2014 and sentenced to four years behind bars.

He died in federal prison earlier this week.

Along with Melvin Williams who served as the basis for several characters and played the character of the Deacon on the show, Barksdale is the second Wire inspiration to prematurely pass away in past year.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Recap: Sorry Isn"t Enough!

On The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 6 Episode 12, a lovely brunch at Kathryn’s San Diego home took a tense turn in a hurry.

When the subject of Kim Richards comes up, this has a tendency to happen. Just how is Kim doing these days? Well, let’s find out …

If you watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills online or read any celebrity news at all, you know how this has played out so far.

You’d be forgiven for mistaking this episode as repeat, even, with:

  • Kyle Richards crying about troubled sister Kim Richards.

  • Lisa Rinna getting into an argument re: Yolanda Foster.

In this case, Rinna’s beef over Foster’s battle with Lyme disease prompted a larger group discussion, and Kyle was particularly upset.

Beginning with Kyle, when it comes to Kim’s addiction and recovery, that’s as sensitive a topic as there is, but there was a breakthrough.

At least in part. Talk of Kim left Kyle in tears but in a good way, since she felt the two are “actually reconnecting, I’m happy, I feel relieved.”

“I’m nervous. We’re not there yet. We have work to do.”

Part of that work involved no longer participating in Kim Richards gossip; Kyle literally got up and left when that topic came up at dinner.

Lisa Rinna told the Bravo cameras, “Kim Richards is an addict, she’s a f–king lunatic. She comes at you like a dog, like a rabid dog.”

As for Yolanda Foster’s Lyme Disease Gossip, Part XVII, Foster expressed her anger with Rinna for insinuating that she’s faking it.

Yolanda called her health issues “the biggest f–king blow I’ve ever had in my life” and told her co-star that frankly “sorry is not enough.”

“You labeled Kim last year, you labeled Brandi [Glanville] and now you’re labeling me,” Foster told Rinna, who in turn defended herself.

As much as she could, anyway. By the end, they hugged things out, so at least there was progress. Yet the wounds have yet to heal.

“It’s like putting a Band-Aid on,” Rinna told the camera.

“There’s still blood gushing all over the place.”

Calvin Harris Congratulates "Beautiful" Taylor Swift on Grammys Win

Taylor Swift received attention at the 2016 Grammy Awards for what she said about Kanye West.

But forget the singer’s main for for a second. Let’s focus on the artist’s beloved beau, shall we?

Calvin Harris did not attend the Grammy Awards themselves with Swift because he was busy recording in the studio.

But the DJ and music producer did catch up with his girlfriend at an after-party, finding time for some PDA (above) and making a point to gush over her on social media.

“Congratulations to my beautiful girlfriend,” Harris wrote as a caption to a photo of Swift accepting the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Swift, meanwhile, was not left alone on her big night. She attended the ceremony with best friend Selena Gomez and then shared the following montage on Instagram soon afterward:

“Oh what a night,” she included as an affiliated message to the pictures.

Swift walked away with Grammys for the album “1989” and also for the music video for “Bad Blood.”

But it was the bad blood between her and Kanye West that many continue to talk about, considering Swift responded to Kanye’s latest diss by clearly referencing him in her acceptance speech.

To young women around the globe, Swift said:

“Just focus on the work and don’t let those people sidetrack you… someday, when you get where you are going, you will look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there.

“And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment.”
