Roger Ailes Dies; Fox News Founder Was 77
Roger Ailes, the controversial founder and longtime CEO of Fox News, has passed away, according to a statement released by his wife.
He was 77.
Regardless of your political views or views of him personally, Ailes reshaped TV news over five decades in the entertainment industry.
“I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes passed away this morning,” Elizabeth Ailes said.
She called him “a loving husband” and “patriot.”
Fox News host Sean Hannity tweeted his tributes to his onetime boss, saying that Ailes was like a “second father.” to him.
“Today, America lost one of its great patriotic warriors. He has dramatically and forever changed the political and the media landscape.”
“Single-handedly for the better.”
The cause of death of Roger Ailes was not immediately clear, and Fox News of all networks was slower than most to announce the news.
Fox anchor Bill Hemmer, looking shaken, first reported Ailes death to his audience, ending his brief report by saying, softly, “Wow!”
Ailes resigned from Fox News last summer following a storm over a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former anchor Gretchen Carlson.
The suit triggered similar claims from other women and an in-house investigation at Fox, and indirectly to Bill O’Reilly getting fired as well.
Ailes strongly denied the claims against him, but stepped down with a multi-million dollar settlement from Fox that softened the blow.
Gabriel Sherman, who wrote a biography entitled The Loudest Voice in the Room, called this tragic, “whatever you think of Roger Ailes.”
“It is a “tragic, sad morning,” Sherman tells MSNBC, noting, “After all he built in his career, he for all practical purposes died alone.”
Twenty-First Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News chaired by Rupert Murdoch, issued its own statement moments ago.
Murdoch praised Ailes for his “remarkable contribution” and said he “shared my vision of a great and independent television organization.”
Ailes, he said, “executed it brilliantly over 20 great years” after beginning his career in the 1960s as a producer at The Mike Douglas Show.
He went on to serve as a media consultant for several Republican presidents of the U.S., including Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
In 1996, Murdoch, seeing a market for a conservative cable news outlet in a sea of liberal-leaning media, hired Ailes to create Fox News.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Ailes molded the network to run more like a campaign operation, with shows that were unabashedly conservative and politically divisive.
People gravitated to this model, which began to influence not only political coverage but politics itself in a way that was unprecedented.
Even those who came to loathe the network cannot help but acknowledge its status as a perennial, game-changing ratings juggernaut.
Fox News eventually ousted CNN as the highest rated cable news network and became one of the most popular networks of all genres.
More than 90 million households regularly tune in, a figure that would have been scoffed at had it been predicted in the late ’90s.
Ailes’ crowing achievements were sullied somewhat, however, in his final months at the network by the charges of sexual misconduct.
The parent company confirms that it has paid upwards of $ 45 million in settlements related to harassment allegations against Ailes.

Megyn Kelly Slams Roger Ailes: He Wouldn"t Shut Up About My Bra!
Megyn Kelly is not about to let former Fox CEO, Roger Ailes get away with the way he treated her during the time they worked with each other.
45-year-old, Kelly, started working for the network in 2004 and has revealed to Dr. Phil that her issues with Ailes kicked off just 12 months after she started.
“My problems with Roger began when I was at the company for 12 months — I was a first-year reporter,” says Kelly.
Kelly revealed she was called up to New York for a meeting and that’s when things got horrible.
“But the problem with that meeting and with several that happened over the next six months was not only was there legitimate professional advice, but there were grossly inappropriate comments,” says Kelly, who also revealed Ailes kept making comments about her body.
kelly was quick to point out that things were only going to get more worse for her.
“It grew more severe over time,” she adds.
“He said he knew I must have some ‘very sexy bras’ and he’d like to see me in them.” “I’m not looking to be salacious, and trust me, this isn’t pleasant for me to discuss,” she says.
If this all turns out to be true, it shows just how despicable Roger Ailes is.
“But I want people to understand this was real, he did do this, and I was far from the only one.”
The whole ordeal must have been horrific for Megyn, but Ailes’ attorney, Susan Estrich previously revealed that her client denied all of the allegations.
“Mr. Ailes denies her allegations of sexual harassment or misconduct of any kind.”
Megyn was not the only one to reveal she was targeted by Roger Ailes.
Fox News host, Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit earlier this year, claiming sexual harassment and retaliation.
In the wake of those claims being revealed, Ailes resigned from his position with the network.
Megyn Kelly’s memoir, Settle For More will be released tomorrow.
What do you think about all this?

Megyn Kelly Details Roger Ailes Harassment: He Tried to Kiss Me, Grab Me...
Megyn Kelly has gone into detail over allegations that Roger Ailes sexually harassed her on multiple occasions while he served as the Chairman of Fox News.
Radar Online has obtained excerpts from Kelly’s upcoming memoir, “Settle For More,” which was updated at the last minute with passages about Kelly’s history with Ailes.
And they paint the disgraced CEO in some pretty terrible light.
Ailes left the company in July after former host Gretchen Carlson became the first of several women to accuse him of sexual harassment.
She eventually settled her lawsuit against Fox News Corp. for many millions of dollars, with Kelly writing that she was approached over the summer to speak out in defense of her ex-boss.
“I refused,” Kelly writes in her book, according to Radar. “There was no way I was going to lie to protect him.”
Ailes has strong denied any type of misconduct, despite numerous Fox News employee claiming he acted in inappropriate ways toward them.
Kelly is one of these employees, as reports back in July asserted that she told executives at Fox the kinds of things Ailes said to her back in the day.
It all starred in the summer of 2005, Kelly now writes, just a few months after she was hired as a legal correspondent in Fox’s Washington bureau.
Having “captured the attention” of Ailes, Kelly says she was often summoned to his office for meetings.
“Roger began pushing the limits,” she alleges, adding in gross detail:
“There was a pattern to his behavior. I would be called into Roger’s office, he would shut the door, and over the next hour or two, he would engage in a kind of cat-and-mouse game with me – veering between obviously inappropriate sexually charged comments (e.g. about the ‘very sexy bras’ I must have and how he’d like to see me in them) and legitimate professional advice.”
Kelly claims that he offered to advance her career “in exchange for sexual favors.”
After she rejected these offers, Ailes continued to make “physical advances” against her.
In January 2006, Kelly says that Ailes “crossed a new line – trying to grab me repeatedly and kiss me on the lips.”
When she pushed him away, she alleges, “he asked me an ominous question: ‘When is your contract up?’ And then, for the third time, he tried to kiss me.”
After six months of this kind of behavior, Kelly reported Ailes to a supervisor. At that time, the harassment finally ended.
“Crossing him was a major risk,” she writes in the book. “But what if – God forbid – he was still doing it to someone?”
Therefore, Kelly called the co-chairman of 21st Century Fox, Lachlan Murdoch, and told him and the firm’s general counsel about her experiences with Ailes.
Days later, the company announced it had hired an outside law firm, Paul Weiss, to investigate Ailes, with Kelly saying she cooperated fully by providing them with as many details as she could.
It’s worth noting, by the way, that Fox News Corp. gave Ailes a $ 40 million golden parachute when he left the company.
And also that he’s now serving as an advisor on Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign.

Shep Smith: Fox News Anchor Comes Out as Gay, Slams Roger Ailes
Back in July, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes stepped down following months of accusations of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior in the workplace.
The conservative news network was sued by Gretchen Carlson, a former on-air personality who claims she was pressured to perform sex acts on Ailes.
Shortly thereafter, longtime legal analyst Greta Van Susteren left Fox, though it’s unclear if her decision had anything to do with the allegations against Ailes.
Throughout the scandal, most of Fox’s best-known pundits stuck by the network that made them household names, though that doesn’t mean they dispute the allegations against Ailes or in any way condone their former boss’ behavior.
One of those personalities, Shep Smith, has been with the network since shortly after its inception in 1996.
He says he never considered leaving Fox, even though he was deeply troubled by reports of Ailes’ behavior.
In a new interview with the Huffington Post, Smith discusses his feelings toward his fallen mentor, for the first time, tacitly confirms that he’s gay:
“It’s such a wonderful place, and it’s been home forever. He was very fatherly and mentorish,” Smith says of Ailes. “And now I know that there were other things going on here.”
Asked if he ever heard Ailes use any anti-gay slurs, Smith responds:
“No, never. He treated me with respect, just respect.”
The 52-year-old anchor adds:
“I wasn’t new in the business when I came here ― I’d been doing reporting for 12 years ― but I wasn’t old in it either, and he gave me every opportunity in the world and he never asked anything of me but that we get it right, try to get it right every day.
“It was a very warm and loving and comfortable place.”
Asked about reports that Ailes prevented Smith from coming out publicly, Smith issues the following flat-out denial:
“That’s not true. He was as nice as he could be to me. I loved him like a father. I trusted him with my career and with ― I trusted him and trusts were betrayed.
“People outside this company can’t know [how painful that betrayal was]. This place has its enemies, but inside, it was very personal, and very scarring and horrifying.”
Smith adds that rather than shying away from the truth about Ailes, he hopes his colleagues at Fox will learn from their disgraced leader’s example.
Smith has been named as one of the most powerful gay men in the country by Out magazine, but he has never formally come out to the public.

Greta Van Susteren Leaves Fox News Amidst Roger Ailes Scandal
Fox News is currently in the midst of a massive shakeup that’s likely to have a profound and permanent impact on the right-leaning cable news powerhouse.
The latest in a series of major changes comes with the announcement that longtime network legal analyst and commentator Greta Van Susteren will be leaving Fox after 14 years.
Van Susteren announced today that she’ll be leaving her popular nightly series On the Record With Greta Van Susteren effective immediately.
She will be replaced by former colleague Brit Hume for the remainder of the 2016 presidential election.
Hume commented on his new role in a statement issued this morning:
“I am happy to take on this assignment for the balance of this extraordinary election,” he wrote.
“My Fox News colleagues have set a high standard for political coverage, which I’ll do my best to uphold. I’m honored to be asked.”
No official reason has been given by either Van Susteren or execs at Fox, but an anonymous source tells the Associated Press that the decision is the result of a “financial disagreement.”
Given everything’s taken place at Fox over the past few months, however, it’s not surprising that many believe there’s more to the story than a simple contract dispute.
Earlier this summer, longtime correspondent Gretchen Carlson sued Fox CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination.
The move led to Ailes resigning as CEO after nearly 20 years at the helm of the number one cable news network.
Interestingly, earlier today Carlson’s lawsuit was settled for a reported $ 20 million.
“Ailes has unlawfully retaliated against [her] and sabotaged her career because she refused sexual advances and complained about severe and pervasive sexual harassment,” a portion of the lawsuit read.
Carlson’s suit came, of course, on the heels of accusations that the network sided with Donald Trump in his clash with Meghyn Kelly.
Former Fox host Andrea Tantaros recently described the culture at Fox as that of a “sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny.”
So did Van Susteren, like so many other female employees at Fox, feel that she was treated unfairly due to her gender?
Or is this really just a case of a wage disagreement?
Thus far, it seems neither side is talking:
“We are grateful for Greta’s many contributions over the years and wish her continued success,” Fox News co-presidents Jack Abernathy and Bill Shine said in a statement released today.
As it’s likely that Van Susteren signed a non-disclosure agreement during her time at the network, it may be quite some time before we get any more information than that.

Roger Ailes Resigns as Fox News CEO
With most of the Fox News demographic tuned in this week to the Republican National Convention, one of the men most responsible for that network’s success has resigned.
It’s time to say goodbye to Roger Ailes.
Rumors Ailes leaving Fox News have been circulating for several days, following a lawsuit filed by ex-Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson.
The lawsuit alleges a number of inappropriate actions taken by Ailes against her, most of which were sexual in nature.
In these legal documents, Carlson claims that Ailes “sabotaged her career because she refused sexual advances and complained about severe and pervasive sexual harassment.”
She says Ailes suggested the pair carry on a sexual relationship and that, after Carlson refused, Ailes responded by firing her from her gig on Fox & Friends.
Carlson was eventually let go entirely late last month.
Despite a vehement denial of Carlson’s claims by Ailes, 21st Century Fox announced on Thursday that he has stepped down from his post.
In his place, 21st Century Fox’s executive chairman Rupert Murdoch will take over as chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.
About a week after Carlson filed her lawsuit, reports surfaced that that Megyn Kelly had told 21st Century Fox’s independent investigators that, many years ago, Ailes had also made unwanted sexual advances toward her.
As an even bigger name than Carlson, and as someone who seemingly corroborated Carlson’s claims, this revelation appears to have sealed Ailes’ fate.
In announcing the Ailes’ news this afternoon, Murdoch praised him as having “made a remarkable contribution to our company and our country.”
He added that when he became founding CEO of Fox News, he “shared my vision of a great and independent television organization and executed it brilliantly over 20 great years.”
Ailes is yet to speak on the decision, but we can only hope he has something nice and inflammatory to soon say on his way out.

Megyn Kelly Accuses Roger Ailes of Sexual Harassment
Last week, TV personality Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit in which she accused Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes of sexual harassment.
Several Fox News Channel employees came to Ailes’ defense, but Megyn Kelly – arguably the network’s most well-liked on-air talent – was noticeably silent on the matter. Now we may know why.
According to a newly-published report in New York magazine, Kelly recently “told investigators that Ailes made unwanted sexual advances toward her about ten years ago when she was a young correspondent at Fox.”
Sources claim that Kelly “described her harassment by Ailes in detail” when asked about her working relationship with her longtime boss.
The situation is quickly developing into a full-blown scandal for one of the most-watched networks.
Carlson claims she was fired from FNC last month as a result of her refusal to comply with Ailes’ sexual demands.
She also says fellow on-air correspondent Steve Doocy has a history of sexual harassment that’s well-known among the network’s female staff.
Parent company 21st Century Fox responded to Carlson’s claims with the following statement:
“We take these matters seriously. While we have full confidence in Mr. Ailes and Mr. Doocy, who have served the company brilliantly for over two decades, we have commenced an internal review of the matter.”
It was to investigators hired by 21st Century Fox that Kelly reportedly made her allegations.
Even before her recent feud with Donald Trump, Kelly was one of the network’s most high-profile personalities.
Viewed as likable and somewhat moderate even by those who don’t agree with her political views, Kelly has consistently been the network’s first choice for conducting high-profile interviews.
Many believe the statements she allegedly made to investigators will mean the end of Ailes’ career.
We’ll have updates on this story as more information becomes available.
