Papa John"s Worries Founder John Schnatter Will Try a Hostile Takeover

On July 11, Papa John’s namesake John Schnatter admitted to having used the n-word in a conference call and resigned as chairman of the company’s board.

The company has removed his license from marketing.

Unfortunately, some at the company fear that the man who has dragged the company down with him through multiple controversies will return — with a hostile takeover.

John Schattner is no longer the chairman of Papa John’s board of directors. But he is still on the board.

It was only six months ago that he resigned as the company’s CEO after making other controversial remarks — which, by the way, were also laced with (less explicit) racism.

Will the company finally oust him and try to save the brand?

Right now, they’re taking steps to at least limit the damage — by adopting what is known in the business world as a “poison pill.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Papa John’s board voted to prevent John Schnatter from increasing his stake in the company beyond its current 29%.

The fear, you see, is that the company’s founder and former CEO will purchase enough stock to obtain a majority share in the company — anything over 50%.

If he does that, then he would possess a controlling interest in the brand.

That would be a real coup for him, but absolutely devastating to Papa John’s stock, which has continued to fall in recent months.

That is why they have introduced this poison pill — or, as they called it in their statement, a “limited duration stockholder rights plan.”

The board has already removed Schnatter’s office at headquarters and, on July 13, made the wise decision to stop using his image in promotional materials.

This latest development stems from a July 11 report that claimed that John Schnatter had used the n-word during a conference call in May.

That word, which is unacceptable for use in any context, was allegedly accompanied by graphic descriptions of violence against racial minorities.

The fallout was swift, with the pizza company losing its media agency over the report and a swell of public outrage.

CEO Steve Ritchie (who replaced Schnatter just months earlier) released a statement: “Racism has no place at Papa John’s.”

Schnatter did admit to having used the slur. He resigned his position as chairman, but remains on the board.

An attorney for Schnatter has whined that the company is treating the founder as a “scapegoat” for struggles with investors.

That remark struck some as funny, given that Schnatter had complained that Papa John’s stocks were falling as a result of NFL players protesting police brutality.

Papa John’s was, at the time, the official pizza of the NFL, for whatever that’s worth. They have since been replaced by Pizza Hut.

Schnatter also made waves for the company — in a bad way — in 2012, when he lashed out at the Affordable Care Act’s requirements, and stated his intentions to pass on those (minor) costs to the consumer.

The man lives in a comically large mansion in the middle of a golf course. His complaints about “onerous” healthcare costs did not go over well.

It is possible, even likely, that Schnatter’s fondness for stirring up racially charged and even explicitly racist controversies is not the only problem ailing Papa John’s.

Their pizza is notable pricier than that of some of their competitors. A Domino’s coupon can get you two medium two-topping pizzas for less than a Papa John’s large specialty pizza costs — also with a coupon.

Customers can do math. But a bad reputation can really sour a brand.

When it comes time for people to order pizza in groups, whether they’re going to watch a sports game or play Dungeons and Dragons, no one wants to be the first to suggest the company that, in some minds, has become synonymous with racism.

The company itself is not to blame, but they have a lot of damage control work ahead of them.

And all of that will be for nothing if Schnatter ever does succeed in a hostile takeover.

Pussycat Dolls Founder Responds to That Whole "Prostitution" Thing

Now that Kaya Jones is done talking, Robin Antin would like to take the floor.

And set the record straight.

Late last week, Jones went off on a Twitter rant that railed against her time as a member of The Pussycat Dolls.

The artist used harsh language to describe an allegedly horrible situation, comparing the group to a “prostitution ring” and saying she was forced to “sleep with whoever they say.”

She said members of the band were “abused,” sometimes “hooked on drugs” and she compared her experience as a Pussycat Doll to “war.”

Turning her attention to Simone Battle, a singer in spin-off group G.R.L. who committed suicide three years ago, Jones wrote:

“I want the den mother from hell to confess why another 1 of her girl group girls committed suicide? Tell the public how you mentally broke us.”

Without stating her name, this was clearly a reference to Robin Antin, the choreographer who started The Pussycat Dolls.

And now Antin has fired back.

On Monday morning, Antin talked to The Blast and called the allegations, “disgusting, ridiculous lies.”

She addedthat that Jones, who was in the group from 2003-2005, is “clearly looking for her 15 minutes [of fame].”

As for why her name may not sound familiar to music fans? Antin said Jones was only ever a “trial” member. She was never an official Pussycat Doll.

This could also explain the response of Asia Nitollano.

That artist, who sang with The Pussycat Dolls in 2007, scoffed at Kaya’s remarks over the weekend as follows:

“Who is Kaya Jones? Lol She was not apart of The Pussycat Dolls the recording group so I do not know her…

“But judging from google she looks like she just wants her 15min of fame. (Side note… it says she’s a Trump supporter… but yet she’s Canadian, which means her vote doesn’t count!!!!

“Same with this comment about The Pussycat Dolls; she wasn’t in the group so her opinion doesn’t count!!!!”

What about Battle‘s suicide?

Antin told The Blast that bringing up this topic was “unfathomable and disrespectful to everyone who works towards suicide prevention and awareness,” writes the website.

And Antin says adds that mentioning a suicide in such a brazen way not only affects the family, but the millions of people that loved and cared for Simone.

She has a pretty strong point there, doesn’t she?

If Jones is going to claim Battle killed herself due to her experience in her singing group and all that included… well… she better have some pretty hard evidence to back up such an assertion.

Hugh Hefner Dies; Legendary Playboy Founder Was 91

Hugh Hefner, the magazine mogul who brought sex to the newsstands in the 1950s and went on to embody a certain type of male fantasy like no other, has passed away at the age of 91.

According to a statement issued by his publicist, Hefner passed peacefully at his famous Holmby Hills mansion Wednesday evening.

“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones,” Playboy confirmed in a statement to E! News.

“He was 91 years old.”

Known to friends and aspirants alike as simply “Hef,” Hefner revolutionized magazine publishing by boldly pushing the envelope in terms of permissible content more than 60 years ago.

In 1953, Hefner quit his job as a copywriter at Esquire to launch Playboy with a modest $ 8,000.

Thanks in part to its highly publicized nude photos of Marilyn Monroe, the first issue sold over 50,000 and helped create one of the world’s most-universally recognized brands.

While Playboy may always conjure thoughts of nude centerfolds and the glorification of high-class debauchery, Hefner never wavered in his commitment to publishing high-minded content alongside the more tawdry material.

An interview with Martin Luther King Jr., a beloved piece by gonzo legend Hunter S. Thompson, and the article that became the inspiration for the Academy-Award winning film The Hurt Locker are just a handful of the magazine’s many journalistic high points.

Literary luminaries such as Vladimir Nabokov, Saul Bellow and Margaret Atwood have all contributed to Playboy, often in response to a personal request from Hefner.

But of course, it was the Playmates of the Month and famous centerfolds that enabled Hefner to break sales and circulation records around the world.

Madonna, Kate Moss, Sharon Stone, Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian, Drew Barrymore, and Pamela Anderson have all graced the magazine’s pages in various states of undress.

Though many wondered how much of Hefner’s public image was a facade and how much of his legendary lifestyle was authentic, those who knew Hef best claimed that he balanced the life of a jet-setting lothario with that of a conscientious businessman and loving father, in much the same way that his magazine juxtaposed intellect with sex.

“Could I be in a better place and happier than I am today?” Hefner said in a 2011 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I don’t think so. In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined a sweeter life.”

Hefner is survived by wife Crystal Harris and his four children from previous marriages.

Our thoughts go out to the Hefner family during this difficult time.

Roger Ailes Dies; Fox News Founder Was 77

Roger Ailes, the controversial founder and longtime CEO of Fox News, has passed away, according to a statement released by his wife.

He was 77.

Regardless of your political views or views of him personally, Ailes reshaped TV news over five decades in the entertainment industry.

“I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes passed away this morning,” Elizabeth Ailes said.

She called him “a loving husband” and “patriot.”

Fox News host Sean Hannity tweeted his tributes to his onetime boss, saying that Ailes was like a “second father.” to him.

“Today, America lost one of its great patriotic warriors. He has dramatically and forever changed the political and the media landscape.”

“Single-handedly for the better.”

The cause of death of Roger Ailes was not immediately clear, and Fox News of all networks was slower than most to announce the news.

Fox anchor Bill Hemmer, looking shaken, first reported Ailes death to his audience, ending his brief report by saying, softly, “Wow!”

Ailes resigned from Fox News last summer following a storm over a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former anchor Gretchen Carlson.

The suit triggered similar claims from other women and an in-house investigation at Fox, and indirectly to Bill O’Reilly getting fired as well.

Ailes strongly denied the claims against him, but stepped down with a multi-million dollar settlement from Fox that softened the blow.

Gabriel Sherman, who wrote a biography entitled The Loudest Voice in the Room, called this tragic, “whatever you think of Roger Ailes.”

“It is a “tragic, sad morning,” Sherman tells MSNBC, noting, “After all he built in his career, he for all practical purposes died alone.”

Big Fox News Logo

Twenty-First Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News chaired by Rupert Murdoch, issued its own statement moments ago.

Murdoch praised Ailes for his “remarkable contribution” and said he “shared my vision of a great and independent television organization.”

Ailes, he said, “executed it brilliantly over 20 great years” after beginning his career in the 1960s as a producer at The Mike Douglas Show.

He went on to serve as a media consultant for several Republican presidents of the U.S., including Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

In 1996, Murdoch, seeing a market for a conservative cable news outlet in a sea of liberal-leaning media, hired Ailes to create Fox News.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Ailes molded the network to run more like a campaign operation, with shows that were unabashedly conservative and politically divisive.

People gravitated to this model, which began to influence not only political coverage but politics itself in a way that was unprecedented.

Fox News Image

Even those who came to loathe the network cannot help but acknowledge its status as a perennial, game-changing ratings juggernaut.

Fox News eventually ousted CNN as the highest rated cable news network and became one of the most popular networks of all genres.

More than 90 million households regularly tune in, a figure that would have been scoffed at had it been predicted in the late ’90s.

Ailes’ crowing achievements were sullied somewhat, however, in his final months at the network by the charges of sexual misconduct.

The parent company confirms that it has paid upwards of $ 45 million in settlements related to harassment allegations against Ailes.

Jimmy John"s Founder: I Did NOT Get Naked and Hump a Dead Shark!

Like millions of other Americans, you might be a fan of the simple sandwiches that have made Jimmy John’s one of the fastest-growing fast food chains in the country.

Unfortunately, a story that’s caught the Internet’s attention this week may forever change the way you think of cold meat pressed between two pasty white slabs.

As you can see, that’s a photo of a naked man straddling a dead shark.

The image has incited outrage on social media for a number of obvious reasons.

Even among hunters and fishermen displaying such callous disrespect for one’s prey is considered distasteful and, well, gross.

It’s one thing to pose for a photo with your kill, but quite another to grin like a maniac while humping a giant carcass.

So what does this have to do with the chain that brought the world the J.J. Gargantuan?

Well, there’s a theory circulating online that the animal lover in the pic is none other than Jimmy John’s founder Jimmy John Liautaud.

Yes, Jimmy John really exists, and like Colonel Sanders before him, his two great passions are peddling meat and firing large weapons.

Liautaud has been criticized in the past for hunting large African game and posting photos of his kills on social media.

He renounced the practice in 2015, after finding himself at the heart of a growing controversy:

“I choose to hunt and I choose to fish,” he explained at the time.

“Everything I’ve done has been totally legal. And the meat has been eaten, if not by me than by someone I’m with. I don’t hunt big African game anymore.”

But not everyone believes that Liautaud was sincere when he swore off the big kills.

A very vocal contingent on Twitter and Facebook believes that’s Liautaud getting friendly with a shark he killed.

Liautaud has denied that he’s the man in the photo in a statement issued to Deadspin earlier this week.

If he’s telling the truth, of course, he deserves to be let off the hook.

(Just as we deserve to be forgiven for our bad fishing puns.)

But if it emerges that Liautaud is the happy fisherman, then he just dug himself an even deeper hole by lying about it.

Either way, it’s been an interesting week in the centuries-old conflict between man and shark.
