Frank Avruch, TV"s Bozo the Clown, Dies at 89

The world of television has lost a legend.

Don’t laugh.

We’re being serious.

Frank Avruch, a veteran television personality and entertainer who was the star of the popular children’s TV program Bozo the Clown, died on Tuesday after a lengthy battle with heart disease.

He was 89 years old.

“He had a heart of gold,” Stuart Hersh, Avruch’s manager, said in a statement to The Associated Press, adding:

“He brought the Bozo the Clown character to life better than anyone else’s portrayal of Bozo the Clown.”

Avruch played the legendary clown from 1959 through 1970.

He was the first to be nationally syndicated by way of the Boston-based program Bozo’s Big Top, which aired in New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., among other select markets across the nation.

The long-time actor was also a UNICEF ambassador, performing as this beloved character at events across the globe.

Avruch also served as a contributor to WCVB-TV for more than 40 years as a host of Man About Town and The Great Entertainment.

Hence the outpouring of sympathy and sadness from those in and around the Boston market in response to this unfortunate piece of news.

“LOVED Frank.  Channel 5’s Man about Town, Great entertainment. Best known as Bozo the Clown,” Tweeted anchor Maria Stephano this morning.

“By all accounts here @wcvb he was a kind wonderful man. RIP Frank and thanks.”

Avruch was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2007.

“He touched so many people with his portrayal,” Hersh added when talking to The Associated Press about his friend and client.

Avruch is survived by his wife Betty, two sons Matthew and Steven and several grandchildren.

The family said the following in a statement of its own today:

“While it’s hard to say goodbye, we celebrate the legacy of joy and laughter he brought to millions of children around the world as Bozo the Clown on TV and as a UNICEF Ambassador and later as host of Channel 5′s Great Entertainment and Boston’s Man About Town.

“Our dad loved the children of all ages who remembered being on his show and was always grateful for their kind words.

“We will miss him greatly.”

We send our thoughts to Avruch’s loved ones.

May he rest in peace.

Anne Frank Halloween Costume Elicits Internet Outrage

Anne Frank is probably the most famous Holocaust survivor of all-time.

The young girl gained notoriety after her diary was published in the wake of her death, as millions of people learned how she hid from the Nazis between 1942 and 1944 when Germany occupied the Netherlands as part of World War II.

She was eventually discovered and died in a concentration camp.

In other words: Anne Frank is a hero.

But one way NOT to honor her struggle would be to sell an ensemble on HalloweenCostumes.com labeled as "World War II Evacuee Girl Costume."

In general, the Holocaust really isn"t something that ought to be reduced to such a cheap stunt.

Yet that"s exactly what this online retailer went ahead and did, much to the shock and anger of the Internet…

1. Here’s the Costume

Heres the costume

On HalloweenCostumes.com, you can pretend as if YOU were killed in the mass murder of Jewish people simply by wearing a blue dress, green beret and a messenger bag for $ 24.99.

“We can always learn from the struggles of history! Unfortunately, World War II shook the world in a way that no one could have foreseen. It showed us what true and mettle were. It also created some unexpected heroes, where even a young girl like Anne Frank with nothing but a diary and hope could become an inspiration to us all. We can learn from someone like that!”

3. Ready, Internet?

Frank Vincent: Dead at 78

Even if you don’t know Frank Vincent by name, you certainly recognize the face of the acclaimed character actor.

He played a brutal mobster on the critically acclaimed series, The Sopranos. He’s also acted in multiple Scorsese films, including Goodfellas.

Sadly, though he will live forever on film, Frank Vincent has passed away today.

TMZ reports that Frank Vincent has died, passing away in a New Jersey hospital.

The actor was 78 years old.

Following a heart attack last week, Frank Vincent underwent open heart surgery today.

Every surgery has its risks, and unfortunately, Frank passed away during the surgery itself.

His acting career spanned 41 years, and you don’t need to be an A-list movie star to accumulate fans.

He will be sorely missed.

Even if you’re not a movie buff, you likely recognize Frank Vincent from his role on The Sopranos.

Vincent portrayed a brutal mob boss by the name of Phil Leotardo.

Leotardo was a vicious character — not something that every actor can pull off — and was the archenemy of the protagonist of the series, Tony Soprano.

It takes more than a look and an accent to play that kind of role, and it takes a lot of acting talent to play opposite of James Gandolfini.

Their characters went head-to-head as they struggled to accumulate power in the days before Game of Thrones dominated the minds of HBO’s viewers.

For that matter, even if you aren’t a film buff, you’ve at least heard of Goodfellas.

Scorsese films tend to speak for themselves.

In Goodfellas, Frank Vincent portrayed Billy Batts.

Admittedly, Frank’s role wasn’t that extensive — Billy Batts, a made man for the Gambino crime family, is murdered by the film’s protagonists, so his screen time was limited.

He also appeared in Scorsese films like Raging Bull (where his character was also murdered) and Casino.

After years and years of playing mobsters, Frank Vincent even had a cameo in one of the final episodes of Stargate Atlantis, in an episode where gambling and crime were in play.

Some character actors gripe about being typecast, but the ones who embrace it as Frank Vincent did can enjoy a career that spans a lifetime.

The Massachusetts native, raised in New Jersey, was also a drummer and worked as an acting coach.

In 2006, Frank Vincent was a co-author of a book: A Guy’s Guide to Being a Man’s Man.

We have to appreciate that tongue-in-cheek title.

Great talent like his will be missed.
