Jennifer Lawrence Visits Children"s Hospital on Christmas, Remains Awesome
Lots of people say they’re gonna perform some sort of charity or volunteer work during the holidays, but all too often the obligations of the season get in the way.
Which is why it’s all the more impressive when someone with as much on her plate as Jennifer Lawrence takes time out of her busy schedule to make the season brighter for those less fortunate.
Lawrence stopped by the Norton’s Children’s Hospital in her native Kentucky on Christmas Eve to spread some cheer and pose for photos with staff and patients.
It’s the fifth consecutive year that Jen has stopped by the hospital during the holiday season.
While many celebs would no doubt take to social media to inform the world of their magnanimity, Jen has made no public mention of her selfless act.
In fact, were it not for an Instagram post from hospital staff, we might never have learned of her visit!
The photo below appeared online on Christmas Eve, along with the following caption:
“Louisville’s own Jennifer Lawrence stopped by Norton Children’s Hospital today to visit with patients, families, and staff,” the hospital shared on their Instagram page on Sunday.
“This visit has become a tradition for Lawrence each Christmas. Thank you, Jennifer! You sure do bring a smile to all!”
And, of course, Jen is generous with more than just her time.
Last year, she donated $ 2 million to the medical center.
Shortly thereafter, she announced the establishment of the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
Sure, stuff like this will never grab as many headlines as the rumors that Lawrence is dating Brad Pitt (she’s not, by the way), but this is the sort of thing Jen will be remembered for long after her popularity at the box office has declined.
(Not that that will be happening anytime soon.)
The impact that Lawrence has had on the young people she visits and their families is immeasurable.
Add to that the fact that there’s no telling how many millions of fans might be inspired by her stellar example and perform some of their own acts of kindness, and you start to get an idea of just how awesome Jen truly is.
We hear she’s not too shabby as an actress, either!

Jackson Roloff Adorably Advertises Matt Roloff"s Children"s Book!
Recently, the FTC has been cracking down on Instagram ads and the reality stars who post them without including the #ad tag.
But surely they’ll make an exception when the Instagram post is a baby holding his own grandfather’s children’s book.
Especially when that baby is as adorable as Jackson Roloff.
Don’t worry — we’re kidding about the FTC involvement.
We’re pretty sure that their policy on ads is for paid sponsorships. They want people to disclose that they’re being paid, so that you don’t think that, like, Brielle Biermann is just obsessed with her UV tooth-whitening light that almost certainly isn’t responsible for her white teeth.
(I mean, I don’t know what kind she uses and I’m no orthodontist, but apparently experts tend to doubt the effectiveness of that kind of device)
Anyway, Tori Roloff shared an image of her adorable, precious baby — the first Roloff grandbaby — posing with Matt Roloff’s book.
Little Lucy, Big Race is a children’s book that is ostensibly about dogs but clearly about little people navigating hurdles in life due to their size but nonetheless accomplishing the same things as everybody else.
A lot of disabilities have children’s books, but there aren’t all that many. Every new one is welcome.
Books like this can be an empowering and relatable educational tool for preschool-aged children who are little people.
Books like this can also be incredibly useful for other children to read in order to empathize with and understand little people.
Most importantly of all, though, look at how adorable Jackson is in this photo:
He’s so cute! And it’s not even the first photo of Jackson Roloff showing off something.
Tori Roloff shared the photo of her precious baby and included this caption:
“Baby J just has no idea how lucky he is… grandpa Roloff dedicated his first book to Jackson!”
That is such a touching gesture!
(Though we hope that baby Ember Jean will get a book dedicated to her, too)
“We love Little lucy big race so much! And BONUS our beloved Sully makes an appearance or two! Now you guys can order your own copy!!!”
Awwww!
Like we said, this is an advertisement — it’s just not a paid one.
Totally within the rules of Instagram, we think.
“It’s available online (link in my bio) and at our family pumpkin patch! Get your copy before they run out!”
(Here’s the link if you’re interested in Little Lucy, Big Race, by the way. Also not an add; we just thought that we’d save you some trouble)
She also included the tags: “#babyjroloff” and “#littlelucybigrace.”
We don’t know what to think of calling him “baby J” instead of by his actual name … but whatever. Lots of babies have nicknames.
Tori Roloff also shared this photo of herself with Zach while Matt poses with the book itself.
A lot of people tend to think of writing a book as just a matter of writing it and then sending it off, wading through rejections, and then … profit?
There’s a lot more involved, especially in a deeply personal children’s book, and especially when you’re a reality star who is marketing the book yourself.
Matt Roloff wants to show the world the kind of dignity and accomplishments that are possible for little people.
This is especially important in a world where, even in 2017, too many little people on television are relegated to comic relief or to playing non-humans.
(Yes, we know about Peter Dinklage, but he’s just one guy smashing barriers and that’s on Game of Thrones, which is scripted television)
Let’s not even get into the antics and portrayals of little people on reality television, but we think that you can imagine.
Anyway, it’s a good idea for a book.
And baby Jackson is a great way to sell said book.
There’s just one thing that might have made that photo even better:
What if they’d had Jackson and Ember Jean on a bed or blanket with the book between them?
Now, we get it — the book is dedicated to Jackson who, like his father and both of his father’s parents, is a little person.
Jackson is also the first Roloff grandbaby.
But if their goal is to get attention … a photo of both babies in the same frame would work wonders.
Just saying.

Kate Middleton Introduces a Children"s Mental Health Video Resource!
The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families produced an animated video designed to show children how to talk about mental health issues. That"s a wonderful resource for many children.
Kate Middleton, who is a patron of the organization, provides the introduction, lending her voice and celebrity status to a worthy cause.
We have the short video for you below, and it"s really worth watching.
We would expect nothing less from the Duchess of Cambridge.
This isn"t just because Kate Middleton is already a mother of two, with a third on the way. Though, obviously, this kind of topic is going to be near and dear to her heart as a mother.
By marrying into the British Royal Family, Kate Middleton did more than just become an implied villain on Grimm.
(Don"t ask)
She inherited a lot of responsibilities — one of which being that she"ll very probably be queen in the not-so-distant future.
Overall, she has an obligation to the British people — whose tax dollars include millions specifically for the royals — to use her influence and celebrity status for positive effect.
One of the ways that she"s doing this is by introducing this video, aimed at children, that talks about mental and emotional health.
Mental health is very complicated.
Until very recently, the subject was almost taboo among most people.
It"s been pointed out that Millennials, stereotypically, are willing to bluntly discuss things like depression and anxiety.
Part of that is being the first generation to grow up with evolving technology, from the internet to social media.
This provided not only access to mental health resources that aren"t hidden behind a paywall (as actually seeing a therapist is), but has allowed Millennials to engage with each other and share their own experiences.
There"s where you get conversations where people say "oh, I"ve always done that … I never knew that it was called executive dysfunction!" or "wait, my life doesn"t feel like it looks like on those commercials, but it sounds like I"m depressed."
Knowing the names for ways that you"re feeling puts you one step closer to finding helpful coping mechanisms.
This video is for younger children, though, and doesn"t use diagnostic terminology or talk about "coping mechanisms" in a formal way.
Rather it talks about feelings.
Some of us don"t live on emotional roller coasters now that we"re adults, and under normal circumstances are feelings are more or less limited to feelings like contentment, hungry, and drunk.
For children, however (and for many adults), there"s a whole spectrum of feelings that their tiny little bodies and still-developing brains cannot contain.
Magnifying that is the general powerlessness of children and the fact that a lot of parents don"t have a clue on how to listen to a child and know what"s normal for children and what could be a sign of mental illness.
So a lot of what the video talks about is how children can start conversations with their parents, teachers, and even their peers about how they"ve been feeling lately and what symptoms they"ve been experienced.
But it"s all handled so informally that they avoid medical jargon at all costs.
It"s important to note (though the video does not) that, in many cases, symptoms of mental health problems in young children can be signs of abuse of various types.
This is a great way to talk about this without making abused children reflexively defensive about what"s been happening to them.
A child might be afraid to tell an adult what"s happened to them at home, but they might not associate their trouble sleeping and stomach aches and acting out with the trauma that they are enduring.
Adorably, the video even deals with how to show good listening skills if a friend comes up to talk to them about mental health.
Always with the suggestion that an adult might be better equipped to help out with the problem.
It"s wonderful that Kate Middleton provided the introduction for this video.
By lending her voice, she gives it more weight and more reach.
There are too many people who still see mental health as a personal failing in which they do not see purely physical ailments. That"s sad, and only education can change that.
Even if you don"t have kids, this video is cute:

Justin Bieber Surprises Sick Fans at a Children"s Hospital!
Some young patients at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County received a surprise visit from none other than Justin Bieber.
You can paint this as a cynical PR move after Bieber got pulled over for using his phone while driving a couple of days ago, but he really is trying to be a new person, and this was super sweet, you know? Maybe there was no agenda.
And what we get to see of the children’s reactions were absolutely priceless.
Not every kid’s visit was caught by a camera.
And it doesn’t look like Justin or anyone with him filmed or photographed any of the visit, which is great.
You don’t want to visit a bunch of sick kids and make it all about you, you know?
(Plus, he or someone on his team has to be aware that at least some people would take photos and video, if this was an effort to save face after his little traffic incident)
But the mother of a girl named Victoria too pictures and described the encounter on Instagram.
Hanson may hate Bieber’s music, but Victoria is a major fan.
“So… our nurse comes in and asks Victoria if she’s been asked about having a visitor? We say no. She ask if she likes ‘x’ person. She says YES.”
That’s a nice start to the story, right?
“Nurse exits the room. We discuss if she’s joking or not. I explain that famous people come visit sick kids at children’s hospitals all the time.”
Even if you technically know that celebrities come and visit, it’s a very different thing to have someone you admire that stop by for a surprise meet-and-greet.
“In this person walks. Introduces themselves to Victoria and we sit stunned. Victoria’s smile was amazing and huge.”
It sounds like Justin Bieber had at least something with the sick girl and her family — some degree of shared religious beliefs.
“Prayed with us and gave tori a great big hug.”
That’s so sweet!
“Ok. Anyone wanna guess who her visitor was?!! #justinbieber”
We’re not sure why she felt the need to not lead with his name, especially when her story was paired with a photo of Victoria with Justin.
(But, you know, whatever)
Some children with compromised immune systems needed extra precautions, so that guests like Justin don’t accidentally spread germs to them.
So don’t look at this pic and think that Justin’s being a germaphobe.
It’s pretty much the opposite scenario.
Children’s Hospital of Orange County is, of course, located in the OC.
It’s affiliated with the University of California, Irvine.
As you can imagine, its focus is pediatric care and treatment, with specialists in:
-Pediatric Neurology
-Pediatric Cardiology
-Pediatric Oncology
-Pediatric Orthopedics
We’re assuming that Justin Bieber visited the 238-bed main hospital facility in the City of Orange.
We have no idea how many patients he visited, though we don’t imagine that he made his way to 238 different rooms.
Obviously, not everyone’s a Bieber fan.
Some kids are too little to even know who he is.
And, tragically, some children in a place like that might be in no condition to accept visitors, celebrity or otherwise.
Justin even dabbed with this kid, which is amazing.
First of all, because dabbing is hilarious.
Second of all, because it’s not dignified in the slightest.
We’re on the seventh month of 2017 and dabbing hasn’t been cool for, like, a year — if it ever was.
(Seriously sometimes it seems like youth culture’s love of irony makes it impossible to tell what’s sincerely cool and what isn’t)
But that’s a great photo.
This isn’t the first decent thing that Justin’s done, of course.
Justin Bieber’s Manchester performance earned praise from Selena Gomez herself, who is flawless and correct in all things.
And it’s good that he’s working so hard at being a better person (even if he struggles sometimes).
One just has to look at Aaron Carter’s recent mugshot to know that Justin isn’t always going to be able to rely on being hot for people to love him.

Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra: SLAMMED for Inappropriate Children"s Clothing Line!
Have you heard the good news?!
Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra have jobs now! Real ones where they do stuff and everything!
It’s pretty notable, because in the past few years, we’ve pretty much just seen Catelynn and Tyler sitting on couches and being sad or apathetic about pretty much everything.
Not to trivialize their mental health struggles — Catelynn has anxiety, and she also suffered from postpartum depression.
But after they placed their first daughter for adoption all those years ago, they had big dreams of going to college and getting good jobs.
Tyler wanted to be a therapist or a social worker at one point, and Catelynn wanted to do something to help other girls who found themselves 16 and pregnant like she was.
However, they’ve seemed pretty stagnant for a while now — until this current season of Teen Mom OG, actually.
This season, we’ve seen Tyler get pretty passionate about the idea of starting a children’s clothing line, and Catelynn’s been helping him.
Tyler designs the clothes himself, and a local seamstress has been building the pieces.
The line is called Tierra Reign — the last part of their last name along with their daughter Nova’s middle name.
And though the clothes aren’t officially for sale yet, they’ve been promoting them on social media for a good few weeks now.
That’s where the problems start.
Yesterday, this photo was shared to Tierra Reign’s official Instagram account:
It was not very well-received.
“Nooooo!” one person commented on the photo. “Don’t do that to little girls clothing. Soooo inappropriate guys!”
Another wrote “I don’t think this top is very age appropriate. The cut, the color, the choker … it’s not something that I would put on a young child.”
Tyler posted the same photo on his personal account, and the comments were much worse — he was accused of sexualizing children with clothing and advertising like this.
He’s deleted the photo from his account, but it remains on the Tierra Reign page.
And honestly, we sort of see what people are upset about. It is a weird picture.
The little girl looks too young to be rocking a choker, and usually in ads like these, the kids are smiling or, you know, acting like children instead of just staring ahead at the camera.
But don’t worry — Tyler has already addressed the issue.
He shared another photo, this one of his precious little daughter, Nova, wearing the same shirt as the one in the ad.
In the caption, he explained that he usually doesn’t respond to criticism on social media, which is fair, because if he did, how would he ever be able to do anything else?
But, he said, he felt the need to respond to the backlash.
“Emma (the cute little model I used) was actually almost 2 sizes too small for the tank!” he wrote.
“We realized the day of the photo shoot & the production of her size was not completed yet, so we didn’t have one to swap it out (or we would have).”
That’s the reason the top looks to be a bit lower cut on the model than it does on Nova — they likely had to clip the shirt in the back to make it look right, which pulled it down in the front.
As for the choker scandal, he said that “We bought a whole bunch of accessories for the shoot & let the kids decide on what they wanted to wear.”
Little Emma apparently picked the choker. After all, chokers are very popular right now.
He said that in this new photo, Nova is modeling the shirt as it’s made to fit, and honestly, it does look pretty cute here.
Tyler acknowledged that “not everyone will like our style,” and “that’s totally okay!”
“But I wanted you guys to know that I am paying attention & appreciate all the feedback … good or bad, it helps the business grow in the right direction.”
Proud of you, Baltierras!

Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Beloved Children"s Book Author, Dies
Amy Krouse Rosenthal, a popular’s children’s book author whose recent New York Times essay about her husband went viral, died Monday morning from ovarian cancer.
She was 51 years old.
Rosenthal’s passing was confirmed by her longtime literary agent and friend, Amy Rennert, who told The Associated press of Amy:
“Everything Amy did was life and love affirming.
“She was such a bright light with a great sense of wonder. Amy loved her family. She loved words, ideas, connections.”
Earlier this month, Rosenthal (who was diagnosed with the disease that would take her life in 2015) made headlines for encouraging other women to date her husband, Jason, after she passed away.
We’re serious.
She penned a beautiful, emotional story for The New York Times’ “Modern Love” column titled “You May Want to Marry My Husband.”
In the piece, Rosenthal created a poignant “dating profile” for her husband, whom she said she fell in love with in “one day.”
The author felt so strongly about Jason that she wanted to share him with others; both in her essay and, in theory, with another woman some day down the line.
“He is a sharp dresser. Our young adult sons, Justin and Miles, often borrow his clothes,” Amy wrote in one section of the article.
“Those who know him – or just happen to glance down at the gap between his dress slacks and dress shoes – know that he has a flair for fabulous socks. He is fit and enjoys keeping in shape.”
Rosenthal made millions of people tear up by outlining various specific details about her husband, going on about all the ways he’s made her happy over the years.
And admitting that she knows she doesn’t have much time left with him or with her three kids, Paris, Justin and Miles.
“I want more time with Jason. I want more time with my children. I want more time sipping martinis at the Green Mill Jazz Club on Thursday nights,” she wrote, adding:
“But that is not going to happen. I probably have only a few days left being a person on this planet.”
WMAQ-TV reported on Monday that Rosenthal was in hospice.
Last month, she wrote about her health on Instagram, making it clear in her final post that things were taking a downward turn.
“This cancer – oh, did I mention I have cancer? – has increasingly (and rudely) robbed me of my normal energy and focus,” she wrote on February 1, explaining that she had to stop her latest project because of her condition.
“There are other things I need to be tending to, creating, and focusing on with my limited time.”
In the essay that went viral, Amy called Jason “an easy man to fall in love with.”
She described him as an “absolutely wonderful father” to their three children and she added:
“Did I mention that he is incredibly handsome? I’m going to miss looking at that face of his.”
Jason and Amy were married for 26 years.
“I didn’t know exactly what she was composing,” Jason said in a statement released regarding The New York Times article.
“But I was with her as she labored through this process and I can tell you that writing the story was no easy task.
“When I read her words for the first time, I was shocked at the beauty, slightly surprised at the incredible prose given her condition and, of course, emotionally ripped apart. “
In a nod to his late wife and the marriage they shared, Jason concluded:
“I don’t have the same aptitude for the written word. But if I did, I can assure you that my tale would be about the most epic love story… ours.”
Amazing, heartwrenching stuff all around.
May Amy Krouse Rosenthal rest in peace.

Terminally Ill Children"s Author Seeks New Wife for Husband in Heartbreaking Essay
Hope you’re ready for a good, long cry, because it’s coming your way fast.
Amy Krouse Rosenthal, if you’re not familiar with her work, is a bestselling author. She’s written several children’s books, but she’s also written a couple of memoirs.
But her latest work could very possibly be her last work, and that’s because Amy has ovarian cancer and isn’t expected to live very much longer.
The work in question is an essay written for the New York Times titled “You May Want to Marry My Husband.”
Because this woman has been married for over two decades, and she is such an unbelievable gem that she’s spending some of her last moments looking out for her husband.
See what we mean about the crying?
“I have been trying to write this for a while,” she begins, “but the morphine and lack of juicy cheeseburgers (what has it been now, five weeks without real food?) have drained my energy and interfered with whatever prose prowess remains.”
“Still,” she writes, “I have to stick with it, because I’m facing a deadline, in this case, a pressing one. I need to say this (and say it right) while I have a) your attention, and b) a pulse.”
Amy says that she’s married to “the most extraordinary man,” and while they’ve been married for 26 years, “I was planning on at least another 26 together.”
She then explains that on the same day their third and youngest child left for college, she and her husband went to the emergency room for what they thought was appendicitis but what turned out to be ovarian cancer.
“So many plans instantly went poof,” she writes — no international adventures with her husband or her parents, no writers’ residencies.
“This is when we entered what I came to think of as Plan ‘Be,"” she continues, “existing only in the present. As for the future, allow me to introduce you to the gentleman of this article, Jason Brian Rosenthal.”
Yep, so let’s kick the heartache up a notch.
Amy writes that her husband Jason is “an easy man to fall in love with,” and she knows because she did it in one day — on a blind date when they were 24 years old.
Though she’s never been on any dating sites, she takes a stab at creating a dating profile for Jason — she calls him a “sharp dresser” with “a flair for fabulous socks,” she says that he’s “uncannily handy” and “man, can he cook.”
She says he’s a wonderful father to their three children, and that “he showed up at our first pregnancy ultrasound with flowers.”
She then goes into a story about how she had a contest in which her fans could submit ideas to her for matching tattoos, and whichever submission she picked, she would get that tattoo with that person.
In the end, she chose a simple tattoo: the word more. Her reader picked it because she’d once written it was the first word she ever said as a child, but now it has deeper meaning.
“I want more time with Jason,” she says. “I want more time with my children. I want more time sipping martinis at the Green Mill Jazz Club on Thursday nights.”
“But that is not going to happen. I probably have only a few days left being a person on this planet. So why am I doing this?”
She explains “I am wrapping this up on Valentine’s Day, and the most genuine, none-vase-oriented gift I can hope for is that the right person reads this, finds Jason, and another love story begins.”
“I’ll leave this intentional space below as a way of giving you two the fresh start you deserve.”
After that blank space, she closed her essay by writing “With all my love, Amy.”
What a woman. What a wife. What an incredibly thoughtful, selfless human being.
And now for those tears …

Serial Pooper Uses Children"s Playground As Toilet
Someone thinks that pooping in a playground where children play is hilarious, because it’s happened in Virginia about four or five times in the past couple of months.
According to KOMO News, parents at an Arlington, VA playground have reported spotting human feces. More than once.
“I have three kids — one is a cancer survivor — and if you run into something like that and put your hands in it, oh my gosh, gross,” mom Andy Delafield said.
The area’s Parks and recreation department has confirmed that someone has been polluting the park on purpose.
“It was inside the little stall over there,” another mom said, pointing to a section of the playground where her two-year-old plays.
“Nobody would want your kids to have to deal with that on a playground.”
What’s worse is that the culprit hides the poop under an item of clothing, so when a parent or kid picks it up, they’re faced with a big steaming pile of nastiness.
“To defecate outside is one thing, but then in a kids’ park where kids can easily fall into it, that really shocks me,” another parent said.
Park officials assume that the person responsible is committing the act after dark. Every time it happens, park employees have to clean it up and disinfect the area.
The police have gotten involved, since public urination and defecation are misdemeanor offenses. Not to mention that human feces are a big public health violation.
If someone poops in a pool, for instance, swimmers are required to get out immediately while lifeguards shock the water for 24 hours to rid it of bacteria.
“Who could be sick enough to like do something like that? It’s just absolutely disgusting,” Delafield said.
There you have it. Someone has enough screws loose to poop in an area where children play.

Jennifer Lawrence Makes HUGE Donation to Children"s Hospital
We didn"t necessarily need another reason to love Jennifer Lawrence.
But we"ll take it!
In the following video, the Oscar-winning actress pledges $ 2 million to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Kentucky.
This generous gift was revealed at a press conference held at the Louisville medical center regarding the facility"s plans to redevelop its heart center.
The donation will be used for this purpose and also to build a new cardiac ICU.
"I’m excited to announce we will be establishing the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital," Lawrence says in the following video message.
"As part of my effort to help these children and caregivers, I challenge the entire community to get behind this cause and help match my gift by raising an additional $ 2 million to support all of these brave and inspiring children.”
Last December, Lawrence (a Kentucky native) visited this same medical center for the third year in a row to spread Christmas cheer to young patients.
A press release in recognition of this great deed reads:
"The Jennifer Lawrence Foundation Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) will feature private rooms dedicated to children recovering from heart procedures, open heart surgery including heart transplant, heart failure and other conditions requiring intensive care.
"The new 14-bed unit will offer space for families to stay with their children. It will be staffed by additional specialists with cardiac critical care training and experience, dedicated nursing staff and other professionals focused solely on heart care."
