Bozo the Clown, Frank Avruch, Dead at 89
Send in THE clown … to God. Frank Avruch, TV’s original Bozo the Clown, died Tuesday in Boston after a long battle with heart disease … according to his family. He was 89. The Boston legend created Bozo back in 1959, and played the lovable clown…
Frank Avruch, TV"s Bozo the Clown, Dies at 89
The world of television has lost a legend.
Don’t laugh.
We’re being serious.
Frank Avruch, a veteran television personality and entertainer who was the star of the popular children’s TV program Bozo the Clown, died on Tuesday after a lengthy battle with heart disease.
He was 89 years old.
“He had a heart of gold,” Stuart Hersh, Avruch’s manager, said in a statement to The Associated Press, adding:
“He brought the Bozo the Clown character to life better than anyone else’s portrayal of Bozo the Clown.”
Avruch played the legendary clown from 1959 through 1970.
He was the first to be nationally syndicated by way of the Boston-based program Bozo’s Big Top, which aired in New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., among other select markets across the nation.
The long-time actor was also a UNICEF ambassador, performing as this beloved character at events across the globe.
Avruch also served as a contributor to WCVB-TV for more than 40 years as a host of Man About Town and The Great Entertainment.
Hence the outpouring of sympathy and sadness from those in and around the Boston market in response to this unfortunate piece of news.
“LOVED Frank. Channel 5’s Man about Town, Great entertainment. Best known as Bozo the Clown,” Tweeted anchor Maria Stephano this morning.
“By all accounts here @wcvb he was a kind wonderful man. RIP Frank and thanks.”
Avruch was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2007.
“He touched so many people with his portrayal,” Hersh added when talking to The Associated Press about his friend and client.
Avruch is survived by his wife Betty, two sons Matthew and Steven and several grandchildren.
The family said the following in a statement of its own today:
“While it’s hard to say goodbye, we celebrate the legacy of joy and laughter he brought to millions of children around the world as Bozo the Clown on TV and as a UNICEF Ambassador and later as host of Channel 5′s Great Entertainment and Boston’s Man About Town.
“Our dad loved the children of all ages who remembered being on his show and was always grateful for their kind words.
“We will miss him greatly.”
We send our thoughts to Avruch’s loved ones.
May he rest in peace.

Grandma the Clown Quits Big Apple Circus Amidst Sex Scandal
The #MeToo movement has come to the big top.
In a disturbing story broken by The New York Times, the man behind one of The Big Apple Circus’ most beloved performers has resigned due to an allegation of sexual misconduct.
And Barry Lubin has admitted via statement that this allegation is accurate.
The 65-year old quit his post on Friday as a clown who dresses up in pearls and a wig after a 16-year-old aerialist alleged he pressured her into posing for pornographic photos in 2004.
Through his lawyer, Lubin acknowledged the veracity of the claim and simply said in response:
“What I did was wrong, and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
The most famous circus in the nation just completed its annual three-month run at Lincoln Center in Manhattan.
It will soon open in Alpharetta, Georgia… but it will do so without Lubin and without the character he portrayed for several years.
According to circus chairman Neil Kahanovitz, a woman named Zoey Dunne leveled her accusation against Lubin in 2012.
However, there was little those associated with the circus could do about it back then because Lubin had actually left the circus.
(Kahanovitz was NOT serving as chairman at the time and says no executive working for the circus when Dunne initially filed her charge is working there now.)
Three months ago, however, Dunne learned that Lubin had returned as Grandma and once again made her complaint known.
She is now 29 years old, married, and pursuing a doctorate in school psychology in Seattle.
“I saw this ad that said ‘Grandma is back!,’” Dunne told The Times on Monday, explaining how she learned of Lubin’s reprisal and adding:
“I almost threw up on the bus.”
On Friday, Dunne reached out to Kahanovitz and he immediately took action.
Dunne tells the newspaper that she met Lubin when she was touring New England with Circus Smirkus, a youth troupe that Mr. Lubin helped coach as recently as last summer.
Lubin told her at the time that he also wanted her to be a model for his personal photography business.
She agreed and showed up at Lincoln Center, prior to being escorted by Lubin to his trailer.
Lubin proceeded to have Dunne lie down and pose in a bathing suit.
He then asked her to picture Ashton Kutcher, expecting this to lead to a state of arousal for Dunne.
“I felt overwhelmingly sad, not excited,” she tells The Times.
From there, Lubin directed her to change into a thong, spread her legs and hold a paintbrush up to her genital area. He asked her to hike her underpants up to the side.
Dunne complied.
Lubin paid her $ 100 in cash and warned her not to tell the circus, claiming folks there would be angry that he was doing outside work in their trailer.
This same process then happened a second time, at Lubin’s insistence.
After working as an aerialist for the circus, Dunne quit the industry and drifted for several years.
“I just felt really confused and lost and ashamed,” she says.
During this time, Grandma the Clown became a very popular figure, spraying himself with a hose during shows and eating popcorn out of the hands of audience members.
In his statement, Lubin apologized directly to Dunne, using her maiden name, Phillips.
“I know that what happened has had a lasting impact on her life, for which I am sorry,” he said, concluding:
“I not only failed Ms. Phillips, but I also failed in my responsibility as a man, an adult, a father, and as a representative of the Big Apple Circus.”

Michael Jackson Liked to Dress as a Clown to Party With Strippers, Conrad Murray Claims
It’s been seven years since Michael Jackson passed away, yet the wild rumors of the ever-controversial King of Pop’s lifestyle show no signs of letting up.
Just last month, it was reported that Jackson slammed Prince as “rude” and “nasty” during the time when the two men were the biggest pop stars on the planet.
Now, Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of manslaughter in connection with Jackson’s death from a drug overdose has written a tell-all that contains a bevy of shocking new bombshells about Jackson’s frequently bizarre behavior.
TMZ has obtained an early copy of the book, and the revelations inside certainly paint an – interesting portrait of a man who was as well known for his unorthodox personal life as for the celebrated catalog of music he left behind.
For starters, according to Murray, Jackson enjoyed partying with strippers – a lot.
These weren’t the usual “makin’ it rain and poppin’ champagne” stripper parties, though.
Murray claims Jackson liked to invite exotic dancers and call girls to hotel room parties – and when they arrived, he would be dressed as a clown.
Believe it or not, it gets weirder.
Jackson also liked spending time with non-professionals, and he would often fake accents and – for some reason – pretend to be a stroke victim in order to meet women.
Yeah, we don’t get it either.
Apparently being fabulously wealthy and one of the most famous men on the planet didn’t do the job?
Anyway, if you’re looking the guiltiest of guilty pleasure summer beach reads, Murray’s book hits stores and Amazon next week.
We recommend using an e-reader.
Everyone will think your jaw is in the sand because of the latest Stephen King, or something.

Amber Rose: Kanye West is a F--king Clown!
As you may have heard, Kanye West went off on Wiz Khalifa on Twitter yesterday.
We didn"t think it could get any more hilarious than Kanye"s barrage of ridiculous tweets ("I made it so we could wear tight jeans!"), but then Amber Rose jumped in and suggested that West needs a finger in his butt to calm him down.
Needless to say, it was one of the best things to ever transpire on the Internet, and it just got better thanks to an interview that Amber gave on the Allegedly podcast.
Ms. Rose made it clear that she had no intention of getting involved with the beef – until Kanye made the ultimate D-bag move and started talking trash about her 2-year-old son, Sebastian.
"I didn"t say anything about his kids, and I"m not going to. It"s ridiculous. They"re innocent babies. You don"t ever, ever talk about a baby, ever.
"That just shows how f–king ridiculous he is."
Asked if she was surprised by Kanye"s remark about her child, Amber said one of the most awesome things in human history without missing a beat:
"No, because I know him," she replied. "I know he"s a f–king clown…You took me around the world. We dated for two years, but you"re talking sh-t about Wiz and my baby?!"
"I wouldn"t have said anything if it was just between him and Wiz. But don"t bring my baby in that"s corny."
Amber also points out that Kanye seems to be quite fixated on her these days, having mentioned her in a song released earlier this week.
Could it have anything to do with the rumors that Amber is hooking up with Scott Disick?
We don"t know, but there"s certainly a lot of drama doing on in Kardashian Land these days.
Listen to a choice cut from Amber"s interview below:
