Busy Philipps: Did She Exploit Heath Ledger"s Death with This Photo?
Monday marked the 10-year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death.
The beloved actor died of a drug overdose on January 22, 2008, leaving a daughter named Matilda that he shared with ex-wife Michelle Williams.
It was one of the saddest developments in recent Hollywood history.
To help her close friend cope with the sad occasion yesterday, Busy Philipps hopped on a plane and spent time with Williams, documenting the bonding session for all to see on social media.
And this is where the controversy now arises.
The former Cougar Town star shared a selfie on Instagram last night, one that features both her and Williams with forlorn looks on their faces.
“It’s ok,” the actress wrote over the top of the snapshot, which depicts Williams burying her head on her good pal’s shoulder.

While some people on the Internet have found it sweet and sentimental, a bunch of others find it inappropriate and offensive.
These trolls basically think Philipps is exploiting her friend’s misery in order to make herself look good.
“I don’t want to be the cynical one here as I’m sure this was done with the best of intentions but… couldn’t this private moment have remained… private?” wrote one online critic, adding:
“I just don’t see why this was necessary.
“You might as well have just gone ‘LOOK AT ME. LOOK AT WHAT A GREAT FRIEND I AM’. Sending love anyway as I don’t doubt the emotions are genuine.”
As you can see below, this same opinion was shared by quite a few Facebook users:
On one hand, we understand these points of view.
It’s certainly a bit strange to publicize what appears to be a private and very emotional moment.
On the other hand… come on, cynics of the World Wide Web.
Williams and Phillipps met on the set of Dawson’s Creek many years ago and are well known as the best of friends.
It seems nearly impossible to believe that Williams didn’t give Phillipps permission to share this snapshot.
Or, even if she somehow did not, it seems nearly impossible to believe that Phillipps meant any harm by posting the picture.
Ledger and Williams got close while filming Brokeback Mountain in 2005; they welcomed welcomed their daughter in October of 2005 and separated in September of 2007.
About a year later, Ledger was found dead from a cardiac arrest, which was the result of an, accidental overdose in his New York apartment.
He was 28 years old.
In tearful videos posted to her Instagram story on Monday, Philipps expressed extreme grief while driving in her car as the song “Time to Pretend” by MGMT plays in the background.
“I was just driving and I was thinking about my friend Heath who died 10 years ago and this song came on, ‘Time to Pretend,’” she said in the footage.
“It came out after he passed away and I remember when it came out, because [I thought] it made me think of him. I just thought he would have liked this song.
“And for some reason, every time I hear this song… it’s weird.”

Busy Philipps: My Uber Driver Tried to Kill Me!
Busy Philipps says she’s lucky to be alive.
On Sunday, the funny actress turned dead serious when detailing a horrifying experience she and husband Marc Silverstein suffered through while taking an Uber earlier that morning.
Via a series of videos on her Instagram Story, the Dawson’s Creek and Cougar Town alum tried to explain what transpired after her evening out.
“The craziest thing just happened to me. I feel like I need to share it with you,” the 37-year old said, continuing as follows:
“I said to my husband, ‘Oh, that guy was weird. Are you sure he’s not going to kill us?’
“And then from the f-cking way back [of the car], a voice is like, ‘I promise that won’t happen’ and there was just, like, a f-cking crazy, scary dude in way back of this Uber.”
Wait… what? Huh?!?
There was some random guy just sitting behind Philipps and her husband as they were being transported home?
Writing from the safety of a Lyft, the actress added:
“So, basically, I was like, ‘I will not be killed tonight!’ and I jumped out and started screaming at this freaking creepy Uber driver, and I was like:
“‘This is not happening. I will not be killed tonight!"”
As she recounted her story for followers, Philipps alternated between nervous laughter and shaking.
“I’m not trying to be alarmist or whatever, but I definitely feel like those guys were trying to murder me tonight,” she said.
“I legitimately feel that way and it was really scary.”
Husband and wife proceeded to exit the vehicle and made it home safely, Philipps assured fans.
She then brought Silverstein into the camera for his take (“It was the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me,” he said) on the situation, and the two eventually begin snacking on pizza at home.
Silverstein guessed that estimated Philipps said “NO!” 50 times as they continued to theorize what happened with their ride.
The writer/producer, for example, believed perhaps there happened to be two pick-ups at once and things got messed up, hence the passenger in the back.
But Philipps wasn’t buying this scenario.
Is she going to press charges?
No.
“I don’t feel like the police would have been helpful,” Philipps said, adding that it’s not illegal to be creepy.
(That’s true; if it were, Kody Brown would have been arrested a long time ago.)
In a statement to Us Weekly, an Uber source said of this scary story and allegation:
Uber has not been informed on the incident yet, but the video has been seen by Uber and is being investigated. Uber received feedback about the trip from the couple indicating a second person was in the car, but no further safety incident was reported by Philipps or Silverstein.
A second person being in the car is in direct violation of Uber’s practices.
We should hope so!
Philipps, who is famously best friends with Michelle Williams, says she’s done with the ride-sharing company forever.
We can’t blame her.
