Oscar Nominations 2018: Who Was Honored? Who Was Snubbed?

It’s that time of year again.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the 2018 Oscar nominations this morning, and as always, there are a few surprises on the list of the honorees.

Unlike in years past, no clear frontrunner for Best Picture has emerged, though The Shape of Water leads the pack in terms of nominations with a whopping 13 noms.

Get Out joins the very short list of horror films that have earned a Best Picture nod, and the film’s director, Jordan Peele, is just the fifth black director to compete or the Oscar.

Greta Gerwig, whose work behind the camera for Lady Bird has earned universal critical praise, is just the fifth woman to receive a directing nom.

Both Peele and Gerwig were controversially shut out of this year’s Golden Globe and BAFTA races.

Elsewhere on the list, Mary J. Blige made history as the first person nominated in both the Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song.

James Franco was not nominated for his acclaimed role in The Disaster Artist, a move that may have been at least partially prompted by the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against the actor.

The film, once regarded as one of the year’s top contenders, received only one nomination, for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Due to the Winter Olympics, this year’s ceremony will take place on March 4, a bit later than usual.

The evening will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who will have his work cut out for him following one of the most scandal-plagued years in Hollywood history.
