Sridevi Kapoor, Bollywood Legend, Drowns to Death in Hotel Bathtub

Sridevi Kapoor, a legendary actress in the world of Bollywood entertainment, was found dead on Saturday morning in Dubai.


She was 54 years old.



According to CNN, Kapoor (known to most of her fans by the single name of “Sridevi”) was attending a family wedding over the weekend when the horrible accident took place.


Local police completed their investigation on Monday and Tweeted confirmation of both Kapoor’s passing and the reason behind it, writing online:


“Following the completion of post-mortem analysis, #DubaiPolice today stated that the death of Indian actress #Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment’s bathtub following loss of consciousness.”


This sort of accident does lead to many questions, but authorities are adamant that it was, indeed, an accident.


The case had since been transferred to Dubai’s public prosecution office.



Often referred to as the “First Female Superstar” in Bollywood, Sridevi’s resume spans five decades in the industry.


Over the years, she starred in some of the industries most memorable and beloved films.


In response to the very sad news, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the actress’ family via Twitter.


“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi,” he wrote, adding:


“She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances.


“My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace.”



Sridevi debuted at the age of four and earned her first leading Bollywood role at the age of 16.


Her credits include some of the most watched films of the ’80s and ’90s, including “Mawaali” (1983), “Tohfa” (1984), “Nagina” (1986), “Mr. India” (1987), “Chandni” (1989), “Lamhe” (1991) and “Gumrah” (1993).


A multitude of Bollywood stars shared their sock and grief at the news on Twitter, including Quantico star Priyanka Chopra, who wrote the following:


“I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved #Sridevi. A dark day. RIP.”

Added Bollywood critic Rajeev Masand to CNN:


“I think she really was one of India’s first female superstars. It didn’t matter who the male actors where, the movies were shouldered by Sridevi.”


And here is singer Adnan Sami:


“I am at a loss for words & jolted as if struck by lightening at this late hour of the night to learn about the shocking & tragic news & untimely demise of #Sridevi ji. Heartbroken.


“She was India’s sweetheart, an incredible artiste & a beautiful human being. Gone too soon. RIP.”


All told, Sridevi appeared in over 300 films.
