Hamilton Electors: Group Secures 20 of 37 Electoral Votes Needed to Reject Trump?

By now, you’re probably aware of the movement within the Electoral College to prevent Donald Trump from becoming the 45th President of the United States on January 20.

But in case you’ve spent the past five weeks unable to hear any media reports over the sound of your own weeping, allow us to bring you up to speed on the last sliver of hope for Democrats and moderate Republicans.

As we reported last week, it’s beginning to look as though there’s a real chance that Trump can be stopped by faithless electors.

Republican elector Christopher Suprun has vowed to vote against Trump, and he’s encouraged others to follow his lead.

One Florida elector has decided to step down rather than cast a vote for Trump, but he’ll almost certainly be replaced by someone willing to toe the party line.

So that means the 36 more Republican electors would need to defect in order to prevent Trump from being appointed America’s next president.

But the Hamilton Electors (so named for the Founding Father’s Federalist Paper No. 68, from which they draw their inspiration) aren’t losing hope for two very important reasons:

For one thing, there are reports of a new strategy, wherein Democratic electors would choose a suitable Republican politician (Mitt Romney and John Kasich seem to be the front-runners) in hopes of encouraging their GOP counterparts to follow suit.

Additionally, rumblings from within the EC are offering hope to electors who may have been on the fence due to concerns that their dissent would be fruitless.

“Obviously, whether an elector ultimately votes his or her conscience will depend in part upon whether there are enough doing the same,” Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig tells Politico.

“We now believe there are more than half the number needed to change the result seriously considering making that vote.”

Lessig – who has been offering free legal counsel to potential faithless electors – says he believes at least 20 electors are planning to defect, and that the Hamilton movement will likely have a snowball effect, picking up more supporters as it grows in size.

“[Electors] are looking at is the best chance we have of stopping Trump than at any other point during this process,” Lessig says.

The RNC maintains that Suprun is the only faithless elector that they are aware of, and Salon reported Tuesday that potential Hamilton Electors have been threatened with political reprisal.

The Electoral College results won’t be known until December 19, but whatever the outcome, this is the first time in modern history that the EC’s final tally is considered anything less that a sure thing – a fact that should remind Trump of how much work he has to do if he’s genuine about his professed desire to re-unify a divided nation.

Mike Pence on Hamilton: That"s What Freedom Sounds Like!

It doesn’t seem possible, but this weekend, America is loving Hamilton just a little bit more than it already did.

And that’s because, on Friday night, Hamilton told Vice President-elect and notoriously terrible human being Mike Pence.

They expressed their fears that he wouldn’t protect all the people in this country, but they expressed those concerns with respect and kindness.

Donald Trump, Pence’s bestie, was deeply offended, and he called for an apology, but Pence himself? He was pretty cool with it.

Pence went on Fox News Sunday, and towards the end of the interview he was asked about the Hamilton fiasco.

He said that he and his family “really enjoyed” the show, and that it was an “incredible production,” and that it was “a real joy to be there.”

With tickets sold out for pretty much the rest of eternity, yeah, we imagine it’s be a joy to be there.

Then, as hilarious yet embarrassing as it is, Pence said that he did hear some boos as he took his seat, but “I nudged my kids and reminded them that’s what freedom sounds like.”

He said that he did hear the speech, and “I wasn’t offended by what was said.”

He added that “I’ll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it.”

Pence went on to give a mini-speech, in which he said “I know this is a very disappointing time for people that did not see their candidate win in this national election.”

“I just want to assure people that what President-elect Donald Trump said on election night, he absolutely meant from the bottom of his heart.”

“He is preparing to be the president of all of the people of the United States of America, and to watch him bringing together people of diverse views, bringing together people that differed with him strongly, seeing him talk to leaders around the world …”

“I just want to reassure every American that in the days head, I’m very confident,” he said.

“They’re going to see President-elect Donald Trump be a president for all of the people, and we embrace that principle and we’re going to work hard to make that principle every day that we serve.”

Nobody wanted to hear all that nonsense, so he was asked if he wanted to hear an apology from the Hamilton cast and crew.

“As I said, I would leave that to others whether that was the appropriate venue for that,” he answered.

So all this sounds pretty coached, right? Or at least like he coached himself to play it cool.

If theatre-goers booing at him was “what freedom sounds like,” then wouldn’t the actual speech also be what freedom sounds like?

Why not just stick with that instead of the whole “I’m not going to say that it hurt my feelings, but if other people think it was really mean of them, then that’s cool” bit?

But hey, at least he said that he wasn’t offended, right? And he very willingly admitted that Hamilton is an absolutely amazing show.

It’s more than what Donald Trump did.

Yesterday, after the news of what happened began circulating, Trump tweeted “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!”

“The Theater must always be a safe and special place,” he wrote. “The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”

He must have really been torn up about it all, because this morning at 6:22 AM, he tweeted “The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologize to Mike Pence for this terrible behavior.”

“Highly overrated”?

Oh, Donald, everybody knows you’re a fool, but this is a little much, don’t you think?

Electoral college, come get your boys. They’re not doing so hot.

Hamilton vs. Donald Trump: The Feud No One Saw Coming!

The most popular musical in Broadway history feuding with the second-most popular Presidential candidate of 2016.

On Friday night, Vice President-Elect Mike Pence attended a showing of Hamilton, getting booed lustily on his way in to the theater and then receiving a speech from actor Brandon Victor Dixon on his way out of the theater.

It was pretty remarkable and most definitely in precedented.

“We welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical – we really do,” Dixon said on stage.

He continued:

“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir.

“But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us. All of us.

“We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations.”

hamilton speech

What specific beefs do the cast of Hamilton have with Pence?

The lead star of the show is gay and Pence has actively supported the concept of gay conversion therapy, in which homosexuals are taken away and essentially tortured until they “convert” to heterosexuality.

He has also said that marriage equality would lead to “societal collapse.”

In 2013, Pence signed a bill to jail same-sex couples in Indiana for applying for a marriage license.

So the cast of the production took this as an opportunity to send a message to Pence. Fairly? Unfairly?

It’s clear where the President-Elected stands on that question.

Tweeted Donald Trump in light of this incident:

“Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!”

And also:

“The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”

It’s unclear how the theater was unsafe in this situation and one could easily argue that this type of speech is exactly what makes it special.

One could also laugh over Donald Trump telling anyone at all to “apologize” over being “rude.”

Trump tweets hamilton

But we’ll let readers choose a side in this Hamilton vs. Trump feud.

We’ll just give Dixon a chance to respond to Trump’s above Tweets.

“@realDonaldTrump conversation is not harassment sir,” he wrote online. “And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda – the show’s Pulitzer-Prize winning creator and former star – also stood behind the actions of his cast.

“Proud of @HamiltonMusical,” he wrote. “Proud of @BrandonVDixon, for leading with love. And proud to remind you that ALL are welcome at the theater.”

Do you think it was deserved? Sound off now!

Mike Pence Went to See Hamilton, Got More Than He Bargained For

So here’s something you probably never thought you’d hear: Mike Pence is just like all of us!

Well, at least our future vice president has one thing in common with us, and that’s the fact that he was super excited to go see the insanely popular musical, Hamilton.

Yes, last night, Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s right-hand man and generally terrible human being, went to see American’s most beloved musical.

What could possibly go wrong?

So many things. So. Many.

When Pence was ushered to his seat, he was heartily booed — one audience member says that people “spent a full minute booing him before she show could start.”

And really, that seems tame. Remember that Pence is a key part Trump’s dream team of racist, homophobic, entirely bigoted government officials.

We’re surprised they let him come at all.

But this is a free country, for now, anyway, so Mike was able to watch the show, along with his wife and some Secret Service fellas.

When it was over, he tried to head out real quick, probably to avoid more booing, but before he made it out the door, the cast called him out directly.

And what happened next was absolutely magical.

Actor Brandon Victor Dixon, the man who plays Aaron Burr, delivered a speech directly to Pence.

“I see you walking out,” Dixon told him, “but I hope you will hear us.”

When the audience began booing again, he stopped them, saying, “There’s nothing to boo here, we’re all sharing a story of love.”

“We welcome you,” he told Pence, “and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical — we really do.”

“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir.”

“But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us.”

He finished his speech with “We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations.”

What beautiful words, right? And if they sound a little like something Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator, would say, then that’s because he helped write them.

Miranda, along with Hamilton’s director, Tommy Kail, and producer Jeffrey Seller wrote the speech, along with the cast, when they learned that afternoon that Pence would be attending the show.

Seller explained that they all “felt that we must express our feelings” to Pence, because “this is not a normal time, this is not a normal election. This has not been a normal result.”

He said that “As a cast comprised of minorities, women, gay people, it was necessary” to express their feelings.

Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted his appreciation of the speech, writing “Proud of @HamiltonMusical. Proud of @BrandonVDixon, for leading with love. And proud to remind you that ALL are welcome at the theater.”

As you can see in the video, the cast didn’t express any hate at all towards Pence, and they really did seem sincere in thanking him for coming to see the show.

But still, Donald Trump himself took offense. Surprise!

“Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing,” he tweeted. “This should not happen!”

“The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”

So Trump looks at a calm, thoughtful, respectful expression of a different opinion than his, and he sees harassment that requires an apology.

Let’s all just listen to the Hamilton soundtrack for the next four years and just try to survive.
