Jake LaMotta Dies; Boxer, Raging Bull Inspiration Was 95

Jake LaMotta, the boxer who provided the inspiration for the classic Martin Scorsese film Raging Bull, has passed away at the age of 95.

Sources close to LaMotta say that he died peacefully at his home in Arizona, surrounded by loved ones.

Inside the ring, the 1949-51 middleweight champion was known for his tenacity and his ability to endure punishment that would send weaker fighters to the mat.

LaMotta’s six bouts with Sugar Ray Robinson are the stuff of boxing legend, and though LaMotta was victorious in just one of the contests, Robinson frequently stated that he was in awe of his opponent’s ability.

“I never fought a fighter as strong as he is,” Robinson said in one post-fight interview.

Sadly, these days, LaMotta is as well known for his personal struggles as for the successes he enjoyed inside the ring.

Marred by a violent temper, mutliple stints in prison, and allegations of fight fixing, LaMotta’s life was never easy, but his many challenges attracted the attention of one of Hollywood’s most legendary filmmakers.

Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull is a warts-and-all portrayal of LaMotta that’s widely regarded as one of the most important cinematic works of the past fifty years.

“When I saw the film, I was upset,” LaMotta said after watching the movie for the fist time.

“I kind of look bad in it. Then I realized it was true. That’s the way it was. I was a no-good bastard. I realize it now. It’s not the way I am now, but the way I was then.”

Despite his relative obscurity as a fighter, one would be hard-pressed to name another athlete who so effectively captured the imagination of the enterntainment world.

In addition to Raging Bull, LaMotta was the subject of a documentary, a stage production about his relationship with his seventh wife, and a controversial pseudo-sequel to the Scorsese film entitled The Bronx Bull.

LaMotta even got dabbled in acting, starring in a one-man show based on his car and making cameos in the classic film The Hustler and the popular TV series Car 54 Where Are You?

LaMotta was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

In 2002, The Ring magazine ranked him as one of the 80 best fighters of the last 80 years.

“He was a great man, sensitive and had eyes that danced right up to the end. I love him, God rest his soul,” his wife said in an interview today.

Paraphrasing an oft-quoted line from Raging Bull, she added, “And he never went down!”

Jake Gyllenhaal & Rooney Mara: Dating?!

Over the course of his career, Jake Gyllenhaal has been the subject of more dating rumors than Taylor Swift.

Most recently, it was rumored that Gyllenhaal was dating Dakota Johnson of 50 Shades of Grey fame.

Just prior to that, there were reports of Gyllenhaal hooking up with Susan Sarandon.

Like we said, Jake might be the only man in Hollywood who’s been one half of more celebrity couples (real and imagined) than Ms. Swift … whom he also dated.

So take the latest rumors about Gyllenhaal’s love life with more grains of salt than a bag of pretzels:

According to Hollywood Life and several other media outlets, Gyllenhaal has been spotted out and about in NYC with actress Rooney Mara.

You might remember Mara from her role in the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, or her acclaimed turn in last year’s Carol.

Though not exactly a household name, Mara has en extremely bright future ahead of her.

Oh, plus her family owns both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants.

So you know – even if this whole acting thing doesn’t work out, she’ll probably be okay.

Again, Jake’s been connected to more famous women than the Lifetime network, so we’ll believe these two are really an item only after we hear some sort of official confirmation.

Still, there’s no denying these two would make a lovely couple.

Unless it turns out that Jake is a big Philadelphia Eagles fan, than all bets are off.

Scandal Season 5 Episode 18 Recap: The Ballad of Jake

Oh, so THAT’S why Jake feels such a connection to Rowan.

Yikes.

On Scandal Season 5 Episode 18, viewers were invited to a wedding no one wanted to see take place:

The nuptials between Jake and Vanessa Moss, which were going down as part of a plot to turn the groom into Edison’s running mate.

But the bulk of the hour was spent looking backward, not forward, as we learned all about Jake’s daddy issues and why he’s so drawn to Olivia’s evil father.

And the details are mighty troubling.

Via a number of twisted flashbacks, we discovered that a young Jake stood idly by as his father violently beat his mother and raped his sister.

But that wasn’t even the worst of everything:

This volatile cycle only concluded with his sister’s taking her own life… following the abortion of his nephew/brother.

When Jake – formerly known as “Pete Harris” – found himself in B613 boot camp, Rowan made a point to exploit every last demon on the path to breaking him and eventually using him.

“I’m not him,” we saw Rowan tell a shivering Jake, who had just spent time in the hole. “I will not hurt you. I will protect you. I’m here for you, son.”

(His fake son then had sex with Rowan’s real daughter the night before his wedding, but whatever. We aren’t about to blame Jake for anything right now.)

When the wedding finally arrived, Jake was prepared to play runaway groom… until Rowan whispered a few sweet nothings in Liv’s ear:

“If this wedding does not go forward, I will slit his throat. … He’s the talent in this family, and I’d rather he be dead than mediocre. I’ve already lost a daughter. Like hell if I’m going to let what happened to you happen to my son.”

Knowing that her dad is not one to bluff, Liv told Jake that she loves Fitz and that he is nothing more the “lesser version of him, a sad reminder of the man [she] truly deserves.”

And the speech worked.

Jake and Vanessa exchanged vows… Jake lived to see another day… and fans were left to wonder if he’ll also see the inside of the Oval Office.

Crazy, right? Poor Jake!

Jake Gyllenhaal Joins Bombing Survivor Jeff Bauman At Red Sox Game

Jeff Bauman was waiting for his wife, Erin to cross the finish line at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

But then, two bombs went off, and Bauman was so badly injured that both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee.

Three years and one daughter later, Bauman got to watch Erin cross the finish line, like she was supposed to that day.

Earlier, Bauman joined Jake Gyllenhaal to throw out the first pitch at Fenway park, where the Red Sox were playing the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gyllenhaal will play Bauman in the film adaptation of his memoir, Stronger, written after the tragedy that left three dead and thousands injured.

The star is currently filming in the city, and has been spotted working out in neighborhood parks and a Soul Cycle studio in Back Bay.

Gyllenhaal (wearing David Ortiz’s #34 jersey) carried Bauman’s daughter, Nora to the pitcher’s mound where both men kicked off the game.

Both men are honorary co-captains of Boston Medical Center’s 2016 Boston Marathon, and on the eve of the world’s oldest marathon, joined their team for a pasta dinner at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel, according to People.

The team has raised almost $ 638,000 for the hospital, where Bauman was treated back in 2013.

Jake T. Austin is Dating His Former Stalker

Jake T. Austin has a new girlfriend.

This really should not be a very big deal, no offense to the young actor best known for starring opposite Selena Gomez on Wizards of Waverly Place.

Austin just isn’t exactly an A-Lister.

Folks are not surfing celebrity gossip websites to learn about his love life.

But Austin’s Instagram photo of him kissing Danielle Caesar has gone viral because Caesar is a fan who has been Tweeting at the star for more than five years.

And the persistence has apparently paid off. Big time.

Back in 2009, for example, Caesar wrote the following on social media:

“Me and @jaketaustin are getting married. Shhh =x he just doesn’t know it yet 😉 yes I know I’m a freak :D.”

Maybe. Or maybe you are actually a psychic, Danielle.

“I’m crazy for her,” Austin captioned the above photo of himself and Caesar sharing a smooch.

Caesar, meanwhile, recently shared her own romantic picture of her and Austin inside a photo booth, writing as a message along with it:

“Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite.”

Austin is aware of how strange this may seem to outsiders, but he released a statement in light of the couple’s newfound attention that reads:

We’re young and having fun just getting to know each other.

It doesn’t matter how you meet someone – on set, in a coffee shop, at school, or in the business. Sometimes you connect with people at the right moment & you just click.

That’s very true.

That’s also a scary prospect for Justin Bieber, who will now be inundated with even more Tweets from female admirers, all of whom have been given hope that cyber stalking flattering can actually pay off on occasion.
