Ex-NFL superstar Shawne Merriman tells TMZ Sports … he was approached to be a part of Will Smith‘s “Concussion” movie but SHOT IT DOWN.
The former San Diego Chargers linebacker says he’s convinced the movie is “definitely going to give the NFL a black eye” … but says he didn’t feel right jumping aboard the project.
The movie — set to come out in December — is supposed to blow the lid of an alleged NFL conspiracy to hide the debilitating life-long effects of concussions from players.
“I turned it down and said ‘No’ … I don’t want to be a part of it because I didn’t know how they were going to make it look.”
Still, Merriman says concussions are a problem among NFL vets — saying, “A lot of people have problems and the NFL should fix it .. period.”

Michael Sam is making the right moves to get another shot at making it in the NFL, but it’ll take divine intervention for him to beat Tim Tebow back to the league … according to ex-player Shawne Merriman.
Merriman says he’s talked to Sam about his effort to get on an NFL roster — and thinks firing his publicist is a good FIRST move. Still, he says Sam has one major hurdle before he can convince a team to call … something Tebow is making a habit of doing.
Tim’s made it to 3 more squads since the Broncos dumped him, and Merriman thinks he’s a lock to get a 4th chance … maybe even this season. Check out why he thinks it isn’t going to happen for Sam though — not yet, anyway.

Donald Trump is covered on offense AND defense — on the same day Tom Brady backed him, we got ex-stud linebacker Shawne “Lights Out” Merriman … declaring his “friend” deserves to be prez.
Merriman was in Hollywood Wednesday when we asked him about Brady’s endorsement of Trump, and he not only co-signed … he revealed Trump has “always been a good friend” of his, and someone he can call at anytime.
It’s unclear how Shawne and Donald first hooked up, but based on this clip … sounds like they’re really tight. Merriman also defended some of Trump’s controversial comments, telling us … “That’s not the Donald Trump that I know.”
There is one thing about Trump that Merriman isn’t crazy about. Watch and listen to his reaction when our photog first mentions Brady.
