Anton Yelchin: Car Dealership Blames Actor For His Own Death

Back in June, Anton Yelchin was crushed by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee after it rolled down his driveway, pinning the Star Trek Beyond star between a metal gate and a brick pillar.

Yelchin’s parents, Irina and Viktor filed a wrongful death suit against the dealership for failure to notify Jeep owners in time about the car’s faulty parts.

The model had been recalled a few months prior to Yelchin’s death due to a parking malfunction.

“Anton’s car gear selector was defective and poorly designed, which caused the vehicle to roll back and fatally pin Anton against a wall.

Anton was “crushed and lingered alive for some time, trapped and suffocating until the death,” the lawsuit states.

The Associated Press reported that a notice alerting customers that Chrysler dealerships were updating the gear shifter to include “auto park,” was mailed to Yelchin’s Studio City home after his death.

“The safety recall was way too little and way too late,” the family’s lawyer, Gary Dordick said during an August 2nd press conference.

“They should have never used this device.”

Jeep’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler US issued a statement sending their condolences to the Yelchin family, but also urging customers “to follow the instructions in their owners manuals and the information cards sent with their recall notices.

These instructions include advising customers to set the parking brakes in their vehicles before exiting,” the statement read.

“We were always proud of him being greatest human being, not being a star or being an actor … It’s not right that he is not here,” his parents said at the press conference.

Now, according to TMZ, the Valencia,CA Chrysler dealership denies any liability in the accident.

The dealership claims that Yelchin’s death was a result of “misuse, misapplication, or damage” in operating the car

Anton Yelchin: Jeep Recall Notice Mailed Days After Actor"s Death

He was pinned against a brick wall by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and crushed to death on June 19th.

Now, Anton Yelchin’s family attorney, Gary Dordick confirms that Jeep mailed Yelchin a recall notice that was received seven days after the actor’s untimely passing.

The safety recall was way too little and way too late,” Dordick said during a press conference on August 2nd, according to Us Weekly

“They should have never used this device.”

That same day, Yelchin’s parents, Irina and Victor filed a wrongful death lawsuit against manufacturer Fiat Chrysler.

“He was our only son,” Viktor said. “It is against nature when a parent buries his own child.”

Irina pointed out that her son “never cared about being a star,” and that he “loved life very much”

The Yelchins hope that the lessons learned from his death will help save lives.

The suit, which Fiat Chrysler claims it has not yet seen, alleges that Anton’s car gear selector was defective and poorly designed, which caused the vehicle to roll back and fatally pin Anton against a wall.

Anton was “crushed and lingered alive for some time, trapped and suffocating until the death,” the lawsuit states.

Fiat Chrysler issued a statement on August 2nd expressing sympathy for the Yelchins, but also a warning to customers who don’t follow instructions.

“FCA US urges customers to follow the instructions in their owners manuals and the information cards sent with their recall notices. These instructions include advising customers to set the parking brakes in their vehicles before exiting,” the statement read.

The Associated Press reports that the notice mailed to Anton’s house alerted customers that Chrysler dealers were updating the gear shifter to include an Auto Park feature.

Like the Yelchin’s lawyer said, “too little” and “way too late.”

Anton Yelchin: Parents to Sue Automaker Over Actor"s Death

On the morning of June 19, Anton Yelchin was found dead outside his home in Studio City, California.

The 27-year-old – best known for his work in the blockbuster Star Trek reboot – was killed in what’s been described as a “freak accident.”

The actor’s 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards in his driveway and pinned the actor against a security gate.

Yelchin’s autopsy indicated that he died almost instantly.

Just days after the tragedy, a class action suit was filed against Fiat Chrysler claiming that the Cherokee had a faulty gear shift that made drivers think the car is in park when it’s actually in neutral.

Now, Yelchin’s parents have filed their own lawsuit against carmaker under the belief that the company’s failure to recall the vehicle directly resulted in their son’s death.

According to TMZ, the Yelchins are also suing the AutoNation car retail chain, which is presumably where Anton purchased the car.

An attorney for the couple would not specify the amount the Yelchins are seeking in damages, but did confirm that they’re suing “for the wrongful death of their son due to significant defects.”

Considering the high-profile nature of the case and the fact that the manufacturing defect in the Cherokee has been well-documented, the company will likely seek to settle out of court.

In addition to his work as Chekov in the three most recent Star Trek films (including the one that’s currently in theaters), Yelchin had built up an impressive and greatly varied body of work for someone so young.

As at home in indie films as he was in big-budget studio tentpoles, Yelchin gained the attention of critics in such beloved films as Alpha Dog, Charlie Bartlett and Green Room.

Celebrities from all forms of media expressed their condolences on social media in the days following his passing.

Yelchin’s friend and former co-star Justin Timberlake described him as a “genius actor, amazing human being.”

Anton Yelchin: Laid to Rest in Private Funeral

Friends, family members and loved ones laid Anton Yelchin to rest on Friday.

According to E! News, a private funeral was held for the late actor at an undisclosed location, less than a week after he died in truly shocking fashion.

Only 27 years old at the time, Yelchin was headed out to meet some friends on Saturday night, June 18.

But his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards on his driveway, pinning the actor against a brick mailbox and a security fence on his property, a police spokesperson has confirmed.

Concerned about their pal’s whereabouts, those Yelchin were supposed to meet went over to his house to see what happened.

This is when they found his body.

The Los Angeles county coroner eventually came out and ruled that Yelchin’s death was an accident by blunt traumatic asphyxia from the force of the car against his body.

He did not suffer, at least.

Various outlets have reported that Yelchin died with one minute of impact.

The 27-year old was best known for roles in Alpha Dog and Charlie Bartlett, as well as his recurring role of Chekov in the new Star Trek franchise.

The next edition of this franchise comes out on July 22.

Since Yelchin’s sad passing, a Star Trek Beyond event in Cannes that would have featured Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana was canceled.

“His fellow actors are just so devastated,” a source tells E! News.

Said Paramount Pictures via statement:

“All of us are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Anton Yelchin. Out of respect, we are withdrawing our participation in the previously announced Star Trek Beyond at Cannes Lions this week.”

Director J.J. Abrams, meanwhile, Tweeted a handwritten note that read as follows:

“Anton–You were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented.

“And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you…”

Anton Yelchin Death Certificate: What Does It Say?

We have what ought to be the final update on Anton Yelchin’s tragic passing.

And it comes in the form of the actor’s official death certificate.

As has been sadly reported many times at this point, Yelchin was scheduled to meet some friends out last Saturday night.

When he did not show up, these friends went over to the actor’s home in order to see what was going on.

Upon arrival, they found Yelchin dead, having been pinned against his security gate by his own car in a freak accident.

Since this horrific incident took place, tributes to the 27-year old star have been pouring in from all corners of Hollywood.

It was best known for his role as Chekov in the updated Star Trek franchise, though he also earned critical acclaim for roles in Alpha Dog and Charlie Barlett.

As for the way in which Yelchin died? The book can now be closed.

According to the aforementioned death certificate, obtained by TMZ,  Anton’s death was caused by “blunt traumatic asphyxia.”

There’s a line on the document which reads the injury occurred because Yelchin was “pinned between the back of his vehicle and gate of residence driveway.

It goes on to say his death was “rapid” after impact.

A previous report stated Yelchin did not suffer, having likely died within a minute of his car crashing into him.

That car was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and an investigation is underway to determine how its faulty gears may have been responsible for this accident.

The death certificate also says there were no other significant conditions contributing to his death.

No alcohol or drugs of any kind were found on Yelchin or in the vehicle.

It really does appear as if this was simply a tragic, terrible, unexpected, freak accident.

Yelchin was 27 years old at the time of his death.

Anton Yelchin Update: Did the Actor Suffer?

We have an update on the tragic death of Anton Yelchin.

As most likely know by now, the actor was killed in a horrible accident early Sunday morning.

He was leaving to meet his friends when he somehow got pinned between his car and a security fence on his property.

It appears as if the car (a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee) malfunctioned, rolling down Yelchin’s driveway and gravely injuring his head and chest upon impact.

An investigation is underway to determine whether the faulty vehicle ought to be recalled or not.

According to TMZ, meanwhile, Yelchin at least did not suffer during this fatal incident.

Investigators on the scene have determined that the actor, best known for his role in the new Star Trek franchise, passed away within one minute of impact between car and body.

Moreover, it does appear to have been a freak occurrence.

The 27-year-old actor had no history of drugs… and no prescription pills or alcohol of any kind was found in the vehicle.

Investigators have also determined Yelchin was not known to smoke marijuana.

One final note: there were apparently security cameras posted on the gate near where Yelchin was killed.

Authorities are reviewing these cameras and their tapes and may be able to actually call up footage of Yelchin’s death.

This would at least help us figure out what happened to the very unfortunate young man.

We continue to send our condolences to his friends, family members and loved ones.

Anton Yelchin: How Did Justin Timberlake Mourn Former Co-Star?

Anton Yelchin continues to be mourned and remembered by those who worked closely with the actor.

As previously reported, Yelchin died on Sunday morning after he got trapped between his car and a security gate on his own property.

Details on how this tragic accident took place are still being gathered, but it appears as if the actor passed away due to head and chest injuries.

His vehicle rolled toward him while Yelchin was standing near the gate, fatally pinning him between the two obstacles.

He was only 27 years old at the time.

Authorities, meanwhile, are looking into the Jeep Grand Cherokee at the center of this accident and attempting to determine whether a recall is in order due to a fault in the design.

Since his passing, many Hollywood stars have come out and expressed their deepest sympathies for Yelchin and his family.

And this now includes Justin Timberlake.

“Anton Yelchin. Genius actor. Amazing human being. Gone WAY too soon. May he rest in peace,” Timberlake Tweeted yesterday.

The singer starred alongside Yelchin in the 2006 movie Alpha Dog.

Yelchin is also best known for having played the title character in Charlie Bartlett and also portrayed Pavel Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek franchise.

The latest movie from that franchise, Star Trek: Beyond, comes out on July 22.

The cast and creators of these new Star Trek films, meanwhile, shared their heartbreak over the unexpected death of their costar in a message posted to social media soon after his passing.

It was written by director J.J. Abrams, who helmed 2009’s Star Trek and 2013 Star Trek: Into Darkness, and it reads as follows:

Anton was our little brother. But only by years; he was as wise and clever and intellectually curious as anyone we ever knew. His laugh was preposterous – you couldn’t hear it and not laugh yourself. He was funny, edgy, wild and talented beyond measure.

His focus and dedication was admirable, as was his love of family, friends, literature and music.

We loved Anton, at work or at play. We are all shocked and numb and devastated by the world’s loss of an extraordinary young man.

To his family, we send you our love during this impossible time.

We will miss Anton forever.

Anton Yelchin: Death Caused By Faulty Car Gear?

It was a total freak accident, but perhaps Anton Yelchin’s death is one that could have been prevented.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that the Star Trek actor was driving at the time of his passing had recently been recalled.

A flaw in the design made it possible for the car to roll even after being parked, according to People Magazine.

The 27-year-old actor’s body was pinned between the Jeep and the gate of his Studio City, Calif., home on June 19.

This occurred after the car rolled backwards down a steep driveway,

Though an autopsy has not yet been released, authorities believe Yelchin died from head and lung trauma after not properly putting the car in park.

An official from told the publication that Jeep Grand Cherokees made between July 16, 2012 and December 22, 2015 were recalled in April.

The vehicles were recalled due to a “possible transmission defect.”

As many as 41 injuries related to the defect have been reported.

These 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees had gear-shift designs that make it difficult to determine what gear the car is in.

The report, conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, stated:

“Drivers erroneously concluding that their vehicle’s transmission is in the ‘park’ position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.”

Chrysler told People that it’s too soon after Yelchin’s accident “to speculate on the cause of this tragedy.”

The car company also expressed sympathy for Yelchin’s loved ones, and vowed to conduct “a thorough investigation” of his car.

Yelchin will posthumously star in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Beyond, opening July 22.

“He was a beautiful person full of love and a joy to be around,” CAA agent Jim Darmody (who co-represented Yelchin) told Variety.

“We are just devastated.”

Anton Yelchin Dead: Star Wars Family Pays Tribute to Late Actor

Hollywood is in mourning at the moment.

Early Sunday afternoon, in a stunning and sad accident involving his car and a gate at his home, Anton Yelchin was killed at the young age of 27.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Yelchin’s body was discovered on the actor’s property, pinned between his vehicle and a gate at his residence in Studio City, California.

The coroner must complete the autopsy before an official cause of death can be declared, but preliminary results are that he passed away from head and chest injuries.

Yelchin was found by a group of friends after they went over to his house to check on the star because he failed to show up for a schedule rehearsal.

The medical examiner’s office says the car did not appear to have been properly parked before Yelchin walked toward the back of it.

It therefore rolled down the driveway and pinned him between the car and gate.

He was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday.

Yelchin had starring roles in the movies Alpha Dog and Charlie Barlett, but really broke out as Chekov in the new Star Wars franchise.

In response to the tragic news, Paramount Pictures has released the following statement:

“All of us at Paramount join the world in mourning the untimely passing of Antony Yelchin.

“As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many and he will missed by all. We share our deepest condolences with his mother, father and family.”

J.J. Abrams, the director behind the first two Star Wars movies in this rebooted franchise, also penned a note to Yelchin and shared it online.

Yelchin note

“Anton, you were brilliant,” it reads. “You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you…”

Finally, Justin Lin, who directed Star Was: Beyond, which opens next month, Tweeted the following after learning of Yelchin’s passing:

Still in shock. Rest in peace, Anton. Your passion and enthusiasm will live on with everyone that had the pleasure of knowing you.

Anton Yelchin Dies; Star Trek Actor Was 27

Anton Yelchin, an actor best known for roles in Star Trek and Alpha Dog, was killed Sunday morning after a freak accident at his home.

He was 27 years old.

According to TMZ insiders, the actor died after being pinned between his own car a brick mailbox.

Yelchin’s friends reportedly grew concerned after he failed to meet them hours earlier for a rehearsal, as they had previously scheduled.

The group therefore went to his San Fernando Valley home at around 1 a.m. and that’s when they discovered his body, pinned in the manner we described above:

Between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate.

Law enforcement officials do not suspect any foul play.

They told TMZ that Yelchin’s engine was running when his body was found, and that the vehicle was in neutral.

The driveway sits on a rather steep incline, although there’s no way of knowing how Yelchin ended up in this position.

He had to have gotten out of his car for some reason.

Yelchin started his career small with roles in independent films and various TV shows, prior to breaking out in movies such as the crime thriller Alpha Dog and the teenage comedy Charlie Bartlett.

His biggest role to date, however, has been in as Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek” franchise; the third film from it, Star Trek Beyond, comes out on July 22 of this year.

An only child born in Russia, Yelchin’s parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a young child.

We send our condolences to his friends, family members and loved ones.

UPDATE: A statement from the late star’s rep reads as follows:

“Actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning. His family requests you respect their privacy at this time.”
